How To Avoid Getting Infected By The Coronavirus

This is the question on everyone's mind as worldwide covid-19 cases blast past 100,000
    by Adam Taggart

As worldwide coronavirus cases blow past 100,000 sickened, the question on everyone’s mind is: “How do I avoid getting infected?”

Chris goes through the best steps for self-protection in this video (jump to the 35m:10s mark for his summary):

Crazy infectious with a serious complication rate near 15% and a case fatality rate of over 3%, many of us are likely to catch this virus, and most of us will probably know at least one person who dies from it.

And with that many sick people, the health care systems around the world are going to be overwhelmed. Even if you don’t have the virus, you still may not be able to get critical care for other health emergencies (sickness, injury, baby delivery, etc)

Chris shares some of the dozens of stories we’re receiving from health practitioners all over the world who feel shocked and betrayed by how poorly their hospitals are prepared for what’s coming.

So take steps now to increase your odds of being one of those who avoids covid-19 altogether.

Found the "How does heat affect this sucker" post

    Been looking for this

    Per this paper:

Stability of SARS coronavirus in human specimens and environment and its sensitivity to heating and UV irradiation

The causal agent for SARS is considered as a novel coronavirus that has never been described both in human and animals previously. The stability of SARS coronavirus in human specimens and in environments was studied.Using a SARS coronavirus strain CoV-P9, which was isolated from pharyngeal swab of a probable SARS case in Beijing, its stability in mimic human specimens and in mimic environment including surfaces of commonly used materials or in household conditions, as well as its resistance to temperature and UV irradiation were analyzed. A total of 10(6) TCID50 viruses were placed in each tested condition, and changes of the viral infectivity in samples after treatments were measured by evaluating cytopathic effect (CPE) in cell line Vero-E6 at 48 h after infection. The results showed that SARS coronavirus in the testing condition could survive in serum, 1:20 diluted sputum and feces for at least 96 h, whereas it could remain alive in urine for at least 72 h with a low level of infectivity. The survival abilities on the surfaces of eight different materials and in water were quite comparable, revealing reduction of infectivity after 72 to 96 h exposure. Viruses stayed stable at 4 degrees C, at room temperature (20 degrees C) and at 37 degrees C for at least 2 h without remarkable change in the infectious ability in cells, but were converted to be non-infectious after 90-, 60- and 30-min exposure at 56 degrees C, at 67 degrees C and at 75 degrees C, respectively. Irradiation of UV for 60 min on the virus in culture medium resulted in the destruction of viral infectivity at an undetectable level. The survival ability of SARS coronavirus in human specimens and in environments seems to be relatively strong. Heating and UV irradiation can efficiently eliminate the viral infectivity.

The SARS virus is a close cousin of the Corona virus so it can be assumed that how it reacts to conditions, the Corona virus may well too. My take away from the abstract:

    1) The SARS virus survives on surfaces (they tested 8) and in water (urine ???) for 72 to 96 hours.

    2) SARS virus stayed stable (assuming we mean in the air? or in a dish?) at all three tested temperatures, 4C/39.2F, 20C/68F and 37C/98.6 for 2 hours.

    3) SARS virus was killed in 90 minutes at 56C/132.8F

    4) SARS virus was killed in 60 minutes at 67C/152.6F

    5) SARS virus was killed in 30 minutes at 75C/167F

    6) SARS virus was killed in 60 minutes of irradiation of UV light.

Conclusion: We need to find out at what temperature the rubber bands on paper masks degrade or melt but you could put your masks into the oven and cook the virus out of them.

Those of us with UV sterilizers, we must use them for at least 60 minutes.

In Australia, Even going to the Drs, You can get Coronavirus from the DR Himself!

    I mean seriously?

Victorian health authorities are trying to contact about 70 patients of a Melbourne doctor who has developed coronavirus after returning from the US

The doctor is the state’s 11th case of the novel coronavirus and the state health minister, Jenny Mikakos, says he attended work and treated patients after her was symptomatic.

“I have to say I am flabbergasted that a doctor that has flulike symptoms has presented to work,” Mikakos said.

The doctor returned from the US on 29 February and saw approximately 70 patients last week between Monday 2 March and Friday 6 March at the Toorak Clinic on Malvern Road. The clinic has been since closed.

Patients have been contacted by text message, phone or email and two patients the doctor treated in a Malvern nursing home have been isolated.

All patients the doctor saw and all clinic staff have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days. The clinic’s other patients have been asked to monitor their symptoms.

Passengers on the flight with the doctor would be contacted, Mikakos said.

Count of US cases on a calendar

Anyone have a list of infection numbers in the States by the date? I remember Trump's speech when it was 15 going down to zero and just wanted to see how much it's jumping every day.

A: Not many.  (This can't be the plan, can it?)

People here (the Netherlands) are not prepared at all, that's concerning when we're the most dense populated country in Europe. People who are sick don't bother trying to cover their mouth when coughing, the government acts like nothing is going on and that they 'have it under control'. Schools and universities probably wont shut down until it's very out of hand and then they'll probably complain they can't treat everyone but didn't bother to take appropriate action now. The government is trying to reduce panic but all they're doing is brewing it and saving it for a later date when it will be worse for all of us.

    This is Concerning

36 year old woman in Omaha, NE had minor symptoms for a week, then got suddenly worse today.   https://twitter.com/randyessex/status/1236064432859553797?s=20

Here in Colorado we are up to 8 cases with possibly 2 related to Italy.  Yesterday there were only two confirmed.  Media here, is treating it, as no big deal.  Local health authorities say everything is under control.

    BC update March 6

B.C. government focuses on containment, unveils COVID-19 response plan as coronavirus cases climb globally

Looks good for planning & strategizing for BC-happy about that. No leadership panic in evidence which is appreciated. I personally find most folks still poo-pooing the threat which I perceive as being very real. Community transmission in Vancouver, lots of people moving between Van & Victoria daily, and a whack of tourists from Washington State here in Feb. I believe it is already circulating here on Vancouver Island and Victoria in particular. It is just taking time to manifest. A few oversea school trips cancelled. Some stores showing stock outages, notably masks & sanitizer. Give it a few more weeks and we will be in the boom phase. I have no doubts at all.

Lots of frustrations trying to get get loved one’s to buy into into the seriousness of the whole enchilada, not just the health threat. Common refrain: you need to stop reading Peak Prosperity.... hmmm.... 🤔 not a fan of that one.

What were those 3 stages again?!? So many stuck in denial of not just this but all the other fires that are burning. I think ppl are tapped out, cannot possibly absorb anymore bad news that is threatening in any way. It is just easier to not pay attention. Sort of like don’t test, don’t tell, don’t have to plan or pay for tests etc. But with so many leaders and authorities lying and spreading false information why am I surprised that ppl go along and blindly follow.

It takes courage to be a contrarian and think and act differently. At times I think it is the contrarians who will be the ones to rise again after all the crap is over. Time will tell, I guess.

    Temperature conversionx

Not trying to be a smartazz, here, (heh)  but, being dyslexic, memorizing conversion tables of numbers is too hard for me.  So, I just memorize the formula and pull out a calculator.

    9/5 C + 32 = F    or      1.8 C +32 =F.               Zero degrees Centigrade is equal to 32 deg. F

    C --> F

Quick approximation if you don't have a calculator handy:

    1) Round to the nearest factor of 5. So, 56 C becomes 55.

    2) Divide by 5. Now we have 11.

    3) Multiply by 9, gives us 99.

    4) Add 32, and we are at 131 F, which is pretty close.

    5) Then if you want to be closer, add or subtract 1.8 for any degree you may have adjusted by in step 1.

    TN, USA has first case

In Williamson county (near Nashville) a traveler back from a trip to Boston has now been diagnosed with SARS Cov2 virus. This is a wealthy family since the kids go to local high dollar private school. I have not heard any details on how quarantine or contact tracing is going. This coupled with a severe tornado storm in the last few days has this area on edge.

    Cones

LOL! We have a few of those lying around. But unfortunately, virus particles would settle inside the cone.  Maybe wear it like a hat so that the cone covers your eyes , nose, and mouth so that the particles fall on the outside of the cone. I wonder if they come in clear, or just translucent?

How Will We Visit with Our Children and Grandchildren while in Isolation?

We started isolating last week because we are in high-risk categories by age and diabetes. We will stay so until there is adequate treatment available — maybe a long time. All of the elders in my family are being sequestered.

Here is a big problem. My partner, Greg, a retired microbiologist, has Millennial children and grandchildren who are five and seven. Last week, he said that grandchildren will give this virus to their parents, who will give it to the grandparents.

This week, Greg’s son-in-law went to visit his grandmother in a care facility, leaving the rest of his family in the car. His mind has not adjusted to the fact that he could currently be infected himself, just asymptomatic. We are terribly worried for his grandmother because all it will take is for one of the many people who work there to become ill to create another Kirkland, WA event. How could that not happen?

Here is our personal quandary. How will we maintain a close relationship with Greg’s children and grandchildren? Every five or six weeks, they come spend a day with us on the homestead, including playing board games and preparing and eating dinner together. Clearly, that won’t work under current conditions. Not sure what our solution will be.

First trip to the grocery store since going into isolation. This is our new protocol.

    • wash hands
    • spray each item with 70% isopropyl alcohol
    • put plastic bags into a larger bag
    • wash hands, soap dispenser and spray bottle
    • mark the plastic bag with the date for storage for at least two weeks
    • spray the door handle, if needed

Note: I bought some 91% isopropyl alcohol, which was marked antiseptic, but isn’t. Greg explained that 64-71% denatures (changes the shape of) the proteins in a virus, inactivating it, while 91% merely dehydrates it, leaving it available to be rehydrated and then active once again.

When the people you live with won't adjust their behaviors

"Note: I bought some 91% isopropyl alcohol, which was marked antiseptic, but isn’t. Greg explained that 64-71% denatures (changes the shape of) the proteins in a virus, inactivating it, while 91% merely dehydrates it, leaving it available to be rehydrated and then active once again."

Thanks!  I've been wondering about the various alcohol dilutions.  Too bad our public health agencies aren't educating us...

On a another note, I live with my elderly parents and share a bathroom.  I am prepped and safe and have lots of cleaning supplies.  They refuse to believe anything about the coronavirus and constantly cough without covering their mouths or washing their hands (it's a long-standing issue, actually, since I've gotten sick from these behaviors), nor will they stop their retiree group activities and large crowd, multiple table, card games five days a week.

I feel like there is no way I can avoid getting infected from them.  And then taking care of them, and myself, at the same time.  I am completely flummoxed.

Antiviral supplement of the day: Zinc

    In the following MedCram video from today, Dr. Seheult explains how viral RNA takes over the machinery of your cells, and why having enough Zn is important when it comes to mounting an immune response;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eeh054-Hx1U

    As with Vitamin-D, the point of Zn supplementation is to make sure you are not deficient.  More is not necessarily better, and too much might be bad.  What is important is to make sure you take a type that is well absorbed, and this paper suggests that Zinc picolinate is best;

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3630857

    Abstract

The comparative absorption of zinc after oral administration of three different complexed forms was studied in 15 healthy human volunteers in a double-blind four-period crossover trial. The individuals were randomly divided into four groups. Each group rotated for four week periods through a random sequence of oral supplementation including: zinc picolinate, zinc citrate, and zinc gluconate (equivalent to 50 mg elemental zinc per day) and placebo. Zinc was measured in hair, urine, erythrocyte and serum before and after each period. At the end of four weeks hair, urine and erythrocyte zinc levels rose significantly (p less than 0.005, p less than 0.001, and p less than 0.001) during zinc picolinate administration. There was no significant change in any of these parameters from zinc gluconate, zinc citrate or placebo administration. There was a small, insignificant rise in serum zinc during zinc picolinate, zinc citrate and placebo supplementation. The results of this study suggest that zinc absorption in humans can be improved by complexing zinc with picolinic acid.

    Cruise ship transmission concept??

Well, I think this may reinforce my layman's guess on why transmission within cruise ships is so easy. Back when the Diamond Princess had its outbreak, coupled with the apartment sewage line transmission within a building, and combined with the knowledge that this may be spread via aerosol = IMO... It is being spread via the sewage lines as well within cruise ships. From a person who has taken around 8 cruises, I remember every one of them had little water, and extreme high air pressure waste disposal; similar to airplanes. I remember on almost all of my cruises, when a neighboring cabin flushed, there would be a short blast of air that would come into my commode / bathroom. Again, I'm just a layman observing, but it still makes sense to me. Now... Think about the new Princess ship dilemma. Not good!!

    Zinc

There are oral zinc solutions available to test if you are zinc deficient. ( Zinc Tally.)   You take a measured amount daily until you can taste the stuff.  Seniors who lose taste and smell faculties are usually zinc deficient.

A general daily amount of zinc supplement is 15 to 20 mg, but it should be balanced by 2 mg. of copper.  In my personal experience, taking too much unbalanced zinc caused a rise in blood cholesterol.

First coronavirus vaccine trial in the US is recruiting volunteers

Curious what Chris might have to say about this one.

First coronavirus vaccine trial in the US is recruiting volunteers (Live Science)

"The vaccine does not contain the virus that triggers COVID-19, called SARS-CoV-2, and cannot cause infection, according to a report by Kaiser Permanente. Unlike vaccines developed for other viruses, such as measles, this new vaccine does not utilize a weak or dead virus as its base. Instead, the vaccine contains a short segment of genetic material called messenger RNA, or mRNA, generated in a laboratory. In a typical cell, mRNA encodes instructions for building different proteins.

The artificial mRNA prompts cells to build a protein found on the surface of the virus, according to the Kaiser Permanente report. A person's immune system should react to this new protein by building up an arsenal of antibodies that target and latch onto this protein, tagging the virus for elimination. Then, the mRNA should break down and be eliminated by the body, leaving the vaccinated person better prepared to fight off SARS-CoV-2, should they ever encounter it.

Designing the vaccine to work in this way allowed Moderna to fast-track the development process, as the company did not need to isolate and modify live samples of SARS-CoV-2 as it would for a more conventional vaccine, according to Kaiser Permanente."

Celsius to Fahrenheit quick math, three step

    1) Double Celsius value  (35c -> 70)

    2) minus 10%  (70-7=63)

    3) add on 32 F   (63+32= 95F)

I flew helos for uncle sam years ago, dang computer had to be punched in with metric values....

    Very interesting vaccine idea T2H

The machinery behind the RNA idea was covered in really good detail in today's MedCram video, which has already been linked to twice here today.  My question:  has this concept been used for vaccines before or is it novel?  Thanks, Jim

Holy Sh!t, at time 9:50 of the video

Hospital is running out of masks, holy sh!t. They are scrounging from constructions sites. I have friends who are nurses at local hospitals. This is not good. Should we expect police knocking on our door asking if we have masks and then taking them?

ADDED: The paranoid in me, says this indicates the government by not supplying this hospital with mask out of the national reserve has given up on containment, and is saving the masks for the forces of enforcement. If you can't save people, then you need to maintain control of the chaos, otherwise you lose power. When I see a executive order activating the military for domestic support (aka deploting them Stateside) I'm going to seriously worry. And head towards greyman status and the underground.

    Zinc

Good point Kunga.. the Zinc picolinate I bought today is 30 mg along with 2 mg Copper.  Too much Zinc can actually lead to Copper deficiency.

    Diamond Princess CFR

Diamond Princess all-age CFR is estimated at 2.3%. For individuals aged 70 and over, the CFR is 14-18%. This to me is a low estimate as I would expect 60% of the critical cases to die (34 times 60% = 20). They estimated only 15 total deaths while I believe the number will be closer to 27 (7 current deaths plus 20 estimated ICU deaths) based on reports out of China (ICU Percentage death rate).
    https://cmmid.github.io/topics/covid19/severity/diamond_cruise_cfr_estimates.html

Note ICU deaths will be common in countries that do not have ICU facilities or in countries where hospitals do not have any empty ICU rooms. If I am correct, you are looking at a CFR of 6% (7 deaths plus 34 ICU patients = 41 possible deaths). Please note that the 6% CFR is for an older population group.

Why is Diamond Princess so important? This is the only population sample we have where everyone was tested. You were tested whether you showed symptoms or not. Of the 3,711 passengers, 301 who showed symptoms tested positive and 318 who had no symptoms tested positive. Unlike China, South Korea, Italy etc. this is the only sample we have where everyone was tested. This gives us the best CFR estimate for this population group (85% of the infected passengers on this ship were over 50 with 75% over age 60). When all the cases have resolved (696 cases with 212 recoveries/7 deaths/34 ICU cases with 453 cases still open) either through recovery or death, we will have a final CFR for this population group.

About the serious/critical cases 5 minutes in

I wanna point out that we're suffering from the Time Lag at this point in time!

Those numbers used to be 81%/19% mild/serious, but that was because China was leveling off BEFORE the EU started accelerating and the Italian/Iranian clusters where known.

What's happening now is everybody's started testing because of the italian cluster. However, we're 3-4 weeks away before the 19% of those cases which will go serious/critical, actually have.

Remember, we're talking about exponential curves on a slow burning virus. If you detect a ultimately fatal case on day 1, it won't count as severe until day 15 (assuming 1 week incubation and 1 week mild symptoms). Since cases double a day, when that case was measured it was 1 of 5 cases (20%), but when it went "severe" it was on a day that 40,960 new cases where reported!

Because that's what happens if you double 5 every day for 14 days. You end up with 41k. Of course, within 14 days, 20% of that 41k also has gone critical.

It won't stay at 15% for sure. I trust the Chinese study that looked into all cases from december 6th to february 6th (something like the first 60k) and found a 81% mild, 14% severe and 5% critical case rate. As well i trust the peer reviewed study of 52 critical cases that said 62% of all critical cases die, implying a 3,4% natural death rate.

That's the floor. 81% mild, 14% severe, 5% critical, 3,4% dead. It will NOT get better then this. Hospital Overload comes on top of these numbers. And it's the reason why this is such a big big problem.

EDIT: I just want to add to it; Yes i know, Chinese data. But if you are continually suspect of everything all the time, that is exactly how you get got. Because the truth gets lost. You can't prepare for everything

    How's the weather out there..?

I'm sure in this forum it's already been addressed at some point.. but in places where the virus is most virulent, how humid is it out there? Are there a lot of moisture droplets (i.e. snow, rain, fog) in the air? If it truly aerosolizes and spreads that easily in air through droplets then wouldn't corona basically plume and make transmission even easier in wetter areas (if people weren't practicing personal hygiene properly)?

    News from Hawai'i

The Grand Princess, the latest floating virus petri dish now slowly circling off San Francisco, visited Hawai'i recently.  I just heard from my sister who lives in Hilo, Hawai'i, that the ship spent the 29th of February in port there, all day.  She says that the usual routine for these cruise ship visits is that the crew goes ashore, shopping, usually at Walmart, while the passengers take tours to the Volcano and other points of interest.  This has not been mentioned in the news concerning the Grand Princess, as far as I know.  But what has been reported is that she carries a crew of 1,100 and was "recalled" back to San Francisco from her visit to Hawai'i.  Only 46 of her 3500 passengers and crew have been tested, according to the news, of whom 21 tested positive, including 19 of the crew.  It will be interesting to see if a cluster of cases develops in Hilo, Hawai'i, in the next couple weeks.

For reference, Hilo is a seaside town of about 25,000 souls on an island the size of Connecticut with a population of around 130,000.  That ought to make a fine site to observe how this virus behaves in a relatively controlled setting.

I was going to post this on our PP site but have not figured out how to post a new message, so I send it to you a one who is obviously well informed and keenly interesting in all of this.  We live in interesting times.

    Aloha,

    Mike

    Washington state stupidity

I live north of Seattle, and have a compromised immune system due to auto-immune disorder. I can not believe the stupidity that we are still dealing with locally. For example, today I was told by my apartment management that I had to remove the plastic and duct tape from an unused door on my small studio apartment (that faces a  area of high foot traffic in my building) because the fire department had been through the building and determined that sealing the unused door was an extreme fire hazard (However, as per law, two other avenues of exit still exist on the apartment. Windows and primary door) I was warned that failure to immediately remove the plastic and duct tape would result in eviction.  We have 10 studio apartments in this building that are about 10'x15' and are crammed together on a tiny floor, the airflow between apartments is extremely high. It's good to know that the fire department has protected me from the non-existent fire hazard, and condemned me to die when Covid-19 hits my compromised immune system.  Also, i got laughed at twice for wearing a surgical mask when I ran an errand earlier today for being "overly paranoid" about the noro-virus flu (seriously, that's what she called it...). Hopefully the rest of the US isn't as clueless as my own state, or else we are ALL screwed!

    Actually High Humidity Is Safer

I’m sure in this forum it’s already been addressed at some point.. but in places where the virus is most virulent, how humid is it out there? Are there a lot of moisture droplets (i.e. snow, rain, fog) in the air? If it truly aerosolizes and spreads that easily in air through droplets then wouldn’t corona basically plume and make transmission even easier in wetter areas (if people weren’t practicing personal hygiene properly)?

I believe the data shows that high humidity cuts down on spread. I guess the aerosal droplets, which do have a tiny amount of water on them, collect into larger droplets in the air and being heavier drop to the ground quicker.

That infects the ground but if its raining it washes them away to die after a few days. If its just foggy, then be sure to disinfect your clothing and shoes, and any surface.

    Link to the Singapore study?

Can someone please link me to that first study on environmental spread that Chris referenced in the video (27:17)? Or at least get me the title of the article so I can search for it? I haven't been able to find it on JAMA. I am going to prepare a packet for leadership at my agency.

    Thanks

    Welp.

I wish i could shut up. So far making a fuss has not earned me any favors in this town. I'll probably leave town once all this is over and go to one of the bum fuck villages around here  😀 Or to Nepal where i intend to live as a goat.

Buuuuut i did my part and emailed a link to Chris's video to both my house doctor and the RIVM. I might've made the RIVM one a bit more scathing, but i'm sure y'all will forgive me on that one.

I doubt they'll do anything with it. Hell it's exactly my luck to find out i had some other rare disease at exactly the same time, then catch Covid in the hospital while i'm waiting with the other sick people to get tested 😀 But yknow.

At least i'll be able to sleep soundly at night once this is all over. Don't think many people will be able to say the same.

    recipes for hand sanitizer, wipes

a couple recipes, which would would all know, but you know.... if you happen to have aloe around for sunburn treatment

    Quote

Specifically, Miryam Wahrman, a biology professor at William Paterson University who wrote "The Hand Book: Surviving in a Germ-Filled World," told Insider a recipe with 70% alcohol should be nine parts alcohol to one part aloe vera. A recipe with 99% alcohol could be three parts alcohol to two parts aloe vera.
OregonLive recommends a two-to-one ratio of 91% isopropyl alcohol to aloe vera. You can also add eight to 10 drops of scented oil if you want to smell nice.

    Quote

To make your own disinfecting wipes, simply take a paper towel or tissue, dab it in rubbing alcohol (or any type of solution that is at least 60% alcohol), and wipe down whatever surface you'd like to clean.
Even before the coronavirus outbreak, Wahrman did this to her phone daily. She also does it to remote controls when traveling.
After cleaning her phone with an alcohol-moistened tissue, "it looks nice and squeaky clean," she said, adding, "And I know most of the germs I've picked up along the way have been killed and somewhat removed."

regular 60% or stronger rubbing alcohol will kill the germs to clean with or on skin

hydrogen peroxide will kill the germs to clean with, and doesnt have the toxic fumes of bleach, some of us are allergic to chlorine.  Do not dilute the hydrogen peroxide.  I use dollar store single use cotton make-up pads ( or whatever their called, like you use to take off finger nail polish.  100 for a dollar) with it to wipe doorknob, bathroom faucet handle, light switch, etc...  I use rags/sponge for outside and pour into the bowl to soak to clean toilets.

Dairies and home beer/wine makers know about idophor to kill germs by soaking items that are in funny shapes so you cant get inside easily to scrub. cold water.

Thou Shall Not Contradict Our Leaders

The problem for government workers, no matter how well meaning they are, is that if it contradicts the President and his staff, they risk getting the "gulag of out of the way places". Means they get sent out somewhere to do a thankless job where you never speak to the public. That's the official line that we are going to do a million tests, when Chris pointed out in the video that if you don't do any testing, then you won't find any virus.

Adm. Brett Giroir mentioned in the video (33:45) is in the same boat. Publicly no matter what the numbers are, he has to claim they are between 0.1 and 1 because Trump did so on Hannity. I hope he thinks if he lies he can do at least some good behind the scene even though publicly he knows he's speaking BS.

Career officials are trying to go with the facts, but Trump has a host of so called "friends" whispering in his ears, all of them with agendas that don't include any of us. Here's a good article on just that:

    https://www.npr.org/2020/03/05/812519679/trumps-gut-collides-with-science-on-coronavirus-messaging

And I'm sure many on the Left are trying to push agendas that will discredit Trump and give them an advantage this November. All the while ignoring what is best for the rest of the Nation and those of us who can't make thousand dollar political contributions. Remember the Rich always believe their power and wealth will save them from any consequence, self made or outside arrived.

This is just not going to end well here in the US.

    Thailand???

I want to know what happened to Thailand. They have not closed flights with China. They recieved ten, if not hundreds of thousands of Chinese from infected areas. Yet no clusters. No explosion of cases. What's going on there?

If true, is it something in their diet? Climate? Genetics? If they can do this without imposition of any controls, surely this situation needs to be researched and replicated in whole or part elsewhere.

Vietnam quarantine? Nothing? Still in place? Lifted? Cases? Literally no investigative journalism by Reuters etc to check on conditions. Baffling two countries here.

South Korea; amazing, on war footing indeed. Portable/drive through FREE  testing??? Wow! How did they set this up in a week or two? Yet, nothing on this side.

I'm an HCP. I am steeling myself to the probability that I will get the virus. A matter of when. I cant turn my back on my clients. My wife is also an HCP, in the local hospital,  in Ontario Canada. It's coming, probably weeks. God forbid that Washington state alternative protocol gets in place here. I'm part of the health and safety team, and I somehow have to drag my committee/management/coworkers to at least PLAN for worst case scenario. We still have time here, I think, maybe 2 weeks, maybe a month. Will anybody listen?

    Only obvious thing here

The US is sub par , compared to the rest of the world in handling this.. the EU and other western countries not much better. And what is a joke , these countries think of themselves as top of the food chain. They are not even as smart as the average ant colony. The only other clearly obvious thing. IS so called officials cannot be for real and expect us to buy this line of horse sh*&(* they are feeding us.

160 troops were stationed for "border control" today, at two locations in texas. Is this legit, or is it the beginning of stealth enforcement later?

I have the Event 201 tapes. How do I get them to martenson?

All the same morons on the TV telling us to not were masks took part in a tabletop simulated exercise of a global corona-virus pandemic shortly before this thing kicked off.

It ended with 65 million dead in 18 months. Martenson has to see these.

I would draft the law suit now , and hand it to them.

There is no possibility that plastic and tape would cause a fire hazard or obstruct a door - in fact it acts as a fire block by definition - it would actually slow any fire in the building and it not sufficient to obstruct or cause one not to be able to exit.. There is no justification in thier actions. Only to cause you harm.

    Kiwi Ken in West Africa

    Hi,
I’ve been watching your YouTube every morning.  Well done, keep it up!

I’ve lived in West Africa (WA) for the last 20 years.  When this virus hits (and the Sun and heat doesn’t kill it), we are in for a wild ride.  Africans don’t stay at home, they don’t have stores of food and medical supplies, life is day to day.  I think we will see a similar approach as Iran i.e. the Govts will tell the people what they have to do but the people won’t listen and carry on with life!  ‘We already have people dying of pneumonia’, is a common phrase.   Very different approach to life here.

I’m in the bush and preparing for the wave.  Whats going to be interesting from this side is when the mines slow down and/or stop.  If we ship our mineral to China but they can’t unload it because their stocks are full because the factories producing stuff aren’t pulling the stock then the supply chain will stop from the raw material source.  The mines will slow down or stop.  I have noticed over the years, mines are the first to start up and last to slow down in a financial crisis e.g. the demand for the can (soft drink or beer can) ends at the supermarket but the supply chain starts at the mine.

When the mines stop, the economies driven by mining will come to a screaming holt.

    Good luck everyone!

A lot more heat and time

WOW, I am pretty shocked and the resilience of the sars virus. That is higher temps and longer times ( much greater ) than what I would have expected.. Meanwhile health officials in the US dont even think this thing is transmissible by contact surfaces. and stated that it dies almost instantly -- and less than 2 hours. lol you have to cook this bitch for 2 hours with heat and light to kill it - it seems stable at room temp almost indefinitely

Yeo man I'm sure he has

The Event 201 tapes have been on our radar for a while. I'm pretty sure Chris has watched them. He's one sharp cookie in the Girl Scout box.

I haven't. I'm more a boots on the ground kind of grunt. No matter if this thing is or isn't some nefarious plot to take global control, how does it change the way I or you prepare to handle the fall out?

Every minute that I look at posts talking about chem trails in the air, or secret cabals of 1%ers setting up secret New Zealand hideaways, every hour I surf the Internet looking at accusatory articles pointing fingers at the Left or the Right, takes time away from the thing that I think is important, learning how to actually survive this. There is too much of that to worry about, and too little time to do it in.

Should I spend an hour less a day, compiling the megathreads of helpful comments here, so people like you can find the information they need, then act on it, or instead post suppositional screes on how some group is manipulating the crisis? Maybe I should argue how many angels of CFR can dance on a pin, based on unknown numbers and grand guesses?

You and others have a choice, use your time wisely, or don't.

Me, I'm planting some lettuce and other greens this weekend in containers, then spending a few days getting my outside garden beds squared away for early planting next week.

Sanitize MASKS with UV light or Silane Quats

This is my first post here - I am struggling a bit. I actually want @Chris Martenson to read but can see no other way.

Chris! - the shortage of masks is a number one issue atm.  So they must be reused. It is just crazy to say to medical staff - you don't need them - likewise the way for the public to avoid infection starts with use of a mask and proper protocol.

The only way till production of masks out of China or outside China catches up is to sanitize and reuse.

Last week I went to buy a UV sanitizer on eBay, there were none. The small ones to sanitize your phone would be ideal but all snapped up - however I have noticed dental surgeries all have them and I expect GPs and hospital treatment facilities do too.

An alternate is to use a silane quats of the type manufactured in USA and New Zealand by Zoono.  The diagram is from www.zoonousa.com and shows the functional structure of a polymer produced by reacting a silane (commonly used in adhesives and primers because of its aggressive bonding to surfaces) and a quaternary ammonium compound or QUAT  The silane quat is deposited on surfaces including fibres out of aqueous solution and lasts up to 28 days - the destruction of the virus is by mechanical means as well as the anti viral action of the QUAT, typically benzalkonium chloride.

IMO, it may not be 100% but better than nothing and far better than committing our medical staff to disease or possible death.

I disclose I hold stock in Zoono - ZNO.ASX and purchase product (recently 2x 5litre refills) in Australia. The product is approved virtually worldwide and is used in China.

    Hydrogen Peroxide Concentrations

Is a concentration of 3% for hydrogen peroxide sufficient to kill Covid-19? Or are there specific concentrations, as was the case with rubbing alcohol, that should be better than others?

Reason for low numbers of deaths in South Korea

    • Chris, I tried to provide info for you on Twitter (in a reply to last tweet), check the figure in the attached tweet! The cult has a lot of young members, so at least a few days ago only about 1000 out of 6000+ cases are over 60! That's the likely reason for low mortality.

    Las Vegas

A case in Toronto had visited Las Vegas in late February. Unlikely that he met the one case shown in that city so it's probably community spreading and being exported by whatever conventions that are still being held.

    UV Sterlizers Have Been Discussed

John, we have discussed UV light and several of us have bought these:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07W7HSDPZ/

I see one is left and I'm disappointed that Evlas has jacked the price up $50 on that.

I'm going to try and do a tutorial this weekend on how to DIY build one for about $20. The bulb is the hang up, I have to special order it and it wouldn't show up til April 3rd. Let me see what I can source here locally. Don't rush to buy anything for a few days.

The bottle neck that is going to require reusing mask is known and has a big priority in the discussions. None of us have the number of masks required to go thru this health crisis, just using them once and tossing them. We have lots of attention on finding an answer and procedures to clean them for reuse.

And btw (for others new here), this place has discussed a tremendous amount of information, including salt additives as a sterilizing mechanism for masks. I'm tired having compiled comments all day, or I'd point you to the info. You may not see what you are interested in right off but its probably here already. Just post a question, and the community will point you in the right direction.

We've been at this for two months, which is like 10 years in virus time, lol.

    Yes H2O2 Kills This

Yagasjai, I thought you were here for the discussions on hydrogen peroxide. There's a paper I've referenced several times that points to a 30 minute bath in it, followed by a water rinse can sterilize masks. It also does surfaces too.

I'll find the paper link and post it tomorrow. I'm going to bed now.

On the subject of reusing masks.

You can. Very easily so. You just need 14 of them.

The longest we've heard this thing survive on anything is 9 days on *smooth* surfaces. I'm going to assume that is at low but not freezing temperatures as well, as to not evaporate all fluid it survives in right away. So, 9 days in ideal conditions.

This virus is no mystery, it's a organism, though a real tiny one. It *has* no capability to reproduce on it's own, that's why it needs us in the first place.

So when you're done with a mask just seal it in a plastic container for 14 days (individually) and it *should* be fine. After 2 weeks whatever was on there is dead and you can use it again.

Though that only goes for coronavirus, not anything else you might've breathed into the mask that might survive longer/grow on the mask. Also i have *no* idea if it's a hydration issue; as in how long does the virus survive in a dry state with a capability to reactivate when hydrated again?

Not sure if the disposable mask is allowed to get wet at all (IE does simply rinsing with water "tear" the holes in the fabric wider thus making it useless) but if that's the case, just rinse it, in the container, and let it dry for 2 weeks. Hell you could always rinse it, put it in the microwave (since that heats up water real good) and just nuke it for a minute or two.

And if it catches fire after 2 minutes... put it in the microwave for 1:30, THEN in the container xD

Is it silly? somewhat. But still better then nothing. And hey it depends on the kind of filter too. I've got a full-face gas mask with filters i plan to just leave on there. The whole point is the virus particles not being able to get through in the first place, i wouldn't have to replace the filter until it's saturated, which when just breathing normal air, is a very long time (considering these things are made to be used in heavy particulate situations).

Now i'm not an expert so i'd love to hear from one. But it seems to me, even if 14 days isn't long enough, surely 21 days is. Or 28. AT SOME POINT this virus has to be dead enough to re-use the mask.

EDIT: Oh i should also mention at this point, that when China started ramping up and requiring people to wear masks, i saw them (and the hong kong newspapers) advise to replace the disposable masks every 4 hours (and 8 for Hong Kong). So you might need 2 a day. And then there's the eye gear and the shower when you get home etc etc.

Because if you wear a mask all day, then come home, take it off, rub your forehead cause it was a long day and then touch your nose; you STILL got infected. The mask is important. But it will not save you if you rely on it too much.

I know that the 201 event has been at the epicenter of theorizing about malicious intent in starting the virus on part of the government. However, that is in no way what I am alluding to here.

In the Tapes you can clearly see the rationale behind discouraging face masks and other retarding measures taken by key decision makers. It is also clear from their discussions that they are prioritizing economic stability and continuity of government over preventing loss of life.

Head of CDC, china CDC, John hopkins, Johnson and Johnson. I have them on video dead to rights, writing off 68 million people as acceptable losses. Please reconsider.

    Airborne pathogen study preliminary results

    There was an inconsistency in this video when you mentioned the study about the virus being airborne. I’ve read that study already;

This study has several limitations. First, viral culture was not done to demonstrate viability. Second, due to operational limitations during an outbreak, methodology was inconsistent and sample size was small. Third, the volume of air sampled represents only a small fraction of total volume, and air exchanges in the room would have diluted the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the air. Further studies are required to confirm these preliminary results.

    Cruise ship toilet transmission

Wow, News Voyeur, this aerosol transmission of fecal material makes so much sense.  Why has no one brought this up before?  I rarely fly, but if I do, I try to avoid airplane bathrooms, gross.  Well, I will definitely never take a cruise, now.  Thanks.

    Zinc/JimH

I am noticing the amount of Zn in specific supplements is increasing.  Since the study you quoted used 50mg, maybe some good manufacturers are trying to match that.  I am glad copper is being included.  Some article I read here, PP, said copper deficiency might be a factor in a bad outcome with the SARS cov19 infection.  I ordered some copper supplements.

Toilet aerosolization problems on ships and planes and disease transmission.

Seems like toilets may be playing a bigger role than we might have expected. You can look at this report linked. Plenty of others on aerosolization caused by vacuum or pressurized toilets like they have on aircraft and ships. Hmmm. So is this a big part of the reason for the severity of the Princess contagion outbreaks? I don't know about you but I doubt I will ever consider going on a cruise. Didn't they also get Norovirus on one and Legionaires on another?

    From the article summary:

"It may be concluded from the above that flush toilets produce substantial quantities of toilet plume aerosol capable of entraining microorganisms at least as large as bacteria, that sufficiently small microbe-laden droplets will evaporate to form droplet nuclei bioaerosols small enough to be inhaled deep into the lung, and that these bioaerosols may remain viable in the air for extended periods and travel with air currents. Production of these bioaerosols during multiple flushes after contamination suggests a long-term potential for a contaminated toilet to be an infectious bioaerosol generator".

    List of Symptoms

Edit: alright SOMETHING in my post is blocking it from it being posted. So ima slowly figure out what it is ^_^ Double edit: really weird. I tried posting the below on the main page, wouldn't work, but via editing it does work and just shows everything. Maybe something's starting to break under the (no doubt overwhelming and >well deserved<) increased traffic.

I was wondering if Chris can include segment in his next video that goes over the >complete< list of symptoms so that people are aware of how to actually tell if somebody is infected. And there's an important reason for this too:
    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-symptoms/

So far all governments are concentrating on the Fever part. That's the other reason why i couldn't get tested, because i couldn't show a sustained 38C rectally measured temperature. Why? Because my symptoms where intermittent. Fever came and went and in the early stage, was very dependent on me sitting still for a while. I posted a video showing that, too. But because it wasn't rectally measured it didn't count =_=

The reason it's important is because of the Chen et al study:

Findings from the Chen et al study published on The Lancet and based on 99 hospitalized patients [4]

    Signs and symptoms at admission
    (Chen et al study) [4]
    Fever
    83%
    Cough
    82%
    Shortness of breath
    31%
    Muscle ache
    11%
    Confusion
    9%
    Headache
    8%
    Sore throat
    5%
    Rhinorrhoea (runny nose)
    4%
    Chest pain
    2%
    Diarrhea
    2%
    Nausea and vomiting
    1%
    More than one sign
    or symptom
    90%
    Fever, cough,
    and shortness
    of breath
    15%

As you can see, they list fever as 83% of patients. But this is an absolute! It means they found patients with and without fever, who both showed symptoms, who both tested positive, but 17% of them did not show a fever. Ergo, it is possible to not have a fever. Even worse the study says the people who actually have all the most "common" symptoms only consist of 15% of total!

People need to take this into account. Especially also, because of the 9% that show the Confusion symptom. I had it as well, causing me to run a red light and end up on the wrong side of the road. Or so i thought, because after gradually getting my memories back over a period of 2 days, i realised the traffic situation had changed there like a year ago already, and i had infact been driving against traffic for hundreds of meters.

Luckily that's on my bicycle on a dedicated bicycle lane (yay Netherlands) but it could've just as well been in a car.

Not to mention that if your loved one gets this, and they become confused, they might *very well* hurt you or themselves. If you're alone and you get this, you have to remember to stay put and wait for it to pass. Stuff like that.

Everybody talks about the fever - but nobody talks about what else will happen if you *do* catch it, like so many people now have.

That is explosive, infuriating (to put it mildly...), mind-boggling, evil, and a few other adjectives... I hope you have copies in someone's else's possession too, just in case...  Please take care and be safe.

But, it certainly wouldn't be the first instance of germ warfare and lab-engineered used for nefarious purposes.

Most cases outside China are not of Chinese patients!

Most cases outside China are not of Chinese patients. They are Iranian, Italian, Caucasian, other Asian, etc. And most travel restrictions are to and from China. What does that mean?

Choosing not to be near most people of any race for fear of the novel coronavirus COVID-19... is being cautious.

Choosing not to be near strangers who look Asian, but still choosing to be around non-Asian strangers... is being racist.

    Get it?

Wow, that's a new way of determining the fatality rate of the virus - total deaths divided by total resolved cases. Has this method been mentioned by the so-called medical experts? Of course, there is still the unknown factor of cases undiagnosed. We should include that in the divisor but that number can't be known.

    Worrying.

    Situation in Italy

Chris, I am writing from Italy and have been a long time "lurker" here.
I wish to thank you for all the valuable information you have provided to everyone in these years and in this particular situation.

I want to share the Italian situation, where I see some positive signs of action:

    - if you suspect you have the virus, you need to call a specific number (which has been well publicized) and a team will take the test directly at your home
    - the test is free
    - alternatively, in front of many hospitals, tents have been erected where it is possible to take the test
    - in the case of a patient with mild symptoms, quarantine is arranged at home
    - the most serious cases are treated in dedicated structures (hospitals, barracks)

    Live with the virus

Live with the virus and do not fight it with masks and chemicals. Strengthen your immune system with vitamine D and C.  We are part of a big ecosystem.

Already the virus is getting weaker. It was lab created but unnatural and it is mutating  back to an innocent bat virus.

Shame on those who created it. That should be the topic.

    The unknown factor

Based on S.Korea's statistics it is reasonably safe to assume that the unknown factor is greater than 2. When we apply this to WW counts using the D/(D+R) formula, this would lead to a CFR less than 3% (~6%/2 = 3%).

As PP indicated in their excellent video's, apart from the inherent CFR, an aggravating issue might be the % of severe cases swamping the health care system.

I'm not an expert, but to me all the different data seems to suggest that:

    1. The honey badger virus is the right name: unless rigorous precautions are taken, it will escape and it will infect, but,
    2. apart from the quality of health care system, there must be other factors influencing the severity considering the huge differences between countries (e.g., Italy, Iran versus S.Korea).
    3. Related to the above: I suspect that where I live, The Netherlands, Southern part, a lot of people are infected, but have mild symptoms. Why? I observed that in the companies I work for, an atypical amount of people  had severe flu symptoms the last two months. The spread of this flu was amazing. Workers reported in sick, came to work after a few days and a couple of days later their coworkers reported in sick. If I'm right, this is actually good news because this means that the virus is less lethal (still not the flu!), and it suggests that other less invasive mitigation approaches could be considered (for example, ensure most people will be able to fight the virus themselves by population-wide vitamin A, C, D3  supplementation, increasing selenium and zinc levels, advice and distribute recovery enhancing products (elderberry, NAC etc), and by trying to build a sanitary cordon around the people with higher probability of complications like older people and people with severe health issues). This weekend the Dutch CDC (RIVM) will  take random samples in the Southern part of the Netherlands, so that either falsifies or proofs my suspicion.

Btw, the actions described in the third list item I gathered from the videos and amazing posts here.

Keep up the good work and take care!

    Re : The unknown factor

I agree totally. They should give these poor elder people vitamine D and C. And fat fish with omega 3.

The food in institutes, including hospitals is terrible. I refused to eat it, instead my family brought me fresh fish. Within 5 days i could leave the hospital although they carved my belly open.

The discussion in the US should be why everybody is obese. Why autisme is on the rise. Why autoimmune diseases are rampant. Why so many are using drugs. Why 10000 people working on bio weapons. Why all over the world there are bio laboratories. Why the financial repression is going on. Why the medical doctors are pushing pharmaceuticals. Why food in the Walmart and so on is corn based, a known poison. Why they eat sick animals.

And then they wonder why they have no resistance.

Amazon says working with state AGs to nab sellers engaged in price-gouging over coronavirus

"In a letter to U.S. Senator Edward Markey, the company said it has removed more than 530,000 product offers over price-gouging concerns as well as “millions” of products that make unsupported claims about their ability to fight coronavirus."

    It's all exponential

I decided to put all the values for various countries onto charts and saw it was all exponential. What I also so was that the outbreak outside China truly began on Feb 21, so it's only been 2 and a half weeks since this became serious.

    I hope they are useful.

Irans Health Minister says 16,000 people are now hospitalized by COVID19

I think we just hit terminal velocity in Iran. Lord help them. This is truly unprecedented if its true but the article Sparky just linked above is saying that as of this morning (Saturday March 7th) there are 16,000 people in Iranian hospitals with Cornavirus. Holy crow, it is a modern day biblical disaster. I thought at first that the number was possibly an error in reporting but the same story is also being reported in the Washington Post. Is that even likely so soon?

"In Iran, which has the vast majority of cases in the Mideast, the Health Ministry said Saturday that 21 more people had died from the virus, bringing the death toll to 145. More than 1,000 infections were also confirmed overnight totaling some 5,823 cases nationwide.

The ministry’s spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour said 16,000 cases are hospitalized across the country, with some still being tested or monitored to see if they had contracted the virus. The capital of Tehran alone has the most infections, with more than 1,500 cases, followed by the Shiite holy city of Qom with 668 and the northern Mazandaran province with 606 cases.

    Good morning LT,

That is the way on blogs like this - hardly any new member has the time or inclination to fully research the thread - so the long term posters are frustrated by the newbies coming on. So thank you for your kindness and patience which I read into the reply you gave me.

I look forward to your tutorial on UV sanitizers - I have noted that pool and water feature sanitizers are UV driven and spare bulbs are easily obtainable. I have a new bulb in my device and spare filters and bulbs.

However I'm going down the path of a daily spray with silane quats.

My friend, we stand on the brink - soon we will know the outcome for the world - are there meds which can cure, or will the virus mutate again and with the ding dongs running the world's health departments, will human population be halved.

Limited screening; but no Covid tests/testing for 2M+ US incarcerated

[Sparky1 summary, comment:  Those inmates screened and that present with symptoms will be diverted to area hospitals and quarantined. Covid-2019 test kits are not yet available for the incarcerated or for jail/prison personnel. Overcrowding, and poor hygiene and medical care will likely cause coronavirus spread among the more than 2 million US incarcerated, and among those professionals and families that interact with them.  This could get very bad, very quickly. The virus is probably already spreading among the incarcerated and those with whom they interact. With no test kits and therefore no testing, it is no surprise that are "no reports" of cases within jails/prisons--until cluster, cluster, boom, BOOM! Are the health/medical care and jail/prison systems ready for this?? Will the US just "temporarily"release these inmates like Iran? This is a pandemic time bomb just waiting to explode.]

US prisons, jails on alert for spread of coronavirus

    [edit:  bold added]

"The nation’s jails and prisons are on high alert, stepping up inmate screenings, sanitizing jail cells and urging lawyers to scale back in-person visits to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading through their vast inmate populations."

"There have been no reports of COVID-19 inside U.S. jails or prisons. But more people are incarcerated per capita here than in any other country in the world and prisons have become hot spots in other nations touched by the outbreak."

"Coronavirus suddenly exploded in China’s prisons last week, with reports of more than 500 cases spreading across five facilities in three provinces. Earlier this week in Iran, 54,000 inmates were temporarily released back into the country amid virus fears."

"...New detainees go through a medical screening and are segregated for at least 10 to 14 days while they wait for the results of any medical tests, said James Garrow, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health."

"The screening has since been updated to include COVID-19, not only in Philadelphia, but also in Dallas, Houston, Miami, Chicago and other cities. No prisons have yet obtained the medical kits to test for the virus, however."

Thank you for awesome but sobering charts!

MadBear, Your charts really hit home re: the exponential spread of this virus worldwide. Very sobering and scary. I appreciate you pulling them together, as I'm sure others do as well.

    How Masks Per Person?

Background: I’m an old school prepper with a deep pantry and numerous water/light/cooking systems, but I had no masks or medical type gear for this situation.  Therefore, when the call went out in late January, I simply went to Home Depot & Lowes and purchased a ton of masks.

Question: How many per person do I really need?  10, rotating through seems to be a minimum.  Perhaps 15 per person to be safe?

If my local hospital/police/EMS/etc. run out, I’d like to know how much of my supply I can afford to donate.

Re: 16K hospitalized with Covid in Iran

Nairobi, I know--that is absolutely mind-blowing! That's 16,000 hospitalized with Covid-2019! This is going to decimate Iran's health care systems, and paralyze their country if it hasn't already done so. Very sad and scary.

Once this conrona-beast takes hold, I'm afraid there's not much keeping this from ravaging other middle east countries, India, Africa or South America--or so-called "developed" but extraordinarily backwards countries such as the US as far as mitigating this pandemic. A month from now I think the world will be shocked at the catastrophic impact of this virus. Even then, I don't think we'll have reached the worldwide peak in the (first wave??) coronavirus pandemic. Truly terrifying and hard to comprehend.  :'-(

It must be a mistake. How could that happen so fast?

Sparky, it is indeed alarming. At this rate Iran will surpass China's numbers in a few weeks (if its true) But something tells me it might be a misprint. We will know better tomorrow. The sleuths here will get to the bottom of this in no time flat.

Wow....maybe I will go buy some elderberry after all. Anything might help. Sheesh!

    Alternative diagnosis method

Obviously a test kit should be used to catch the mild cases before they go severe. But it's looking like we can't possibly scale that up fast enough.

Remember that the Chinese updated the numbers at some point by clinical diagnosis via CT scan. While that only works on the severe/critical cases; if you're in hospital (or at home) getting worse and a test kit will take a while; a CT scan might yield results quicker.

Beats waiting for a test kit while you slip from severe into a critical coma. If it's not the flu or a cold, and not normal pneumonia, chances are very high it's Covid.

Bandana to cover mask to blend in

Just occurred to me to overlay a bandanna over any protective mask to conceal the mask and appear less protected than others. Calls less attention to you as prepper. I know close up the bands may show, so be it. You should be at distance anyway. Be the gray man or woman.

Sometimes The Only Choice is Bad vs Worse

I know that the 201 event has been at the epicenter of theorizing about malicious intent in starting the virus on part of the government. However, that is in no way what I am alluding to here.

In the Tapes you can clearly see the rationale behind discouraging face masks and other retarding measures taken by key decision makers. It is also clear from their discussions that they are prioritizing economic stability and continuity of government over preventing loss of life.

Head of CDC, china CDC, John Hopkins, Johnson and Johnson. I have them on video dead to rights, writing off 68 million people as acceptable losses. Please reconsider.

Sometimes you don't have a good choice to make. Is it criminal that those kind of people choose economic considerations over lives, not criminal but sad. Then we can't get people to approve a gas tax here to fix crumbling bridges and roads, even though gasoline prices are dirt cheap and those are problems everyone can see.

You have to keep the economy running or those 68 million die from starvation and lack of heat. We as a civilization don't do well preparing for events like this, that have a low chance of happening. So when they do, we get a bigger bill than if we had.

I'm just a commentator like you are, you can PM Chris and send him the info yourself anytime. He's awful busy and his inbox is slammed though.

    UV sterilization idea

I just bought a UV system to sterilize rainwater for domestic consumption. It comes with a 110 volt ballast and a 36” bulb.

It seems like the 3’ 55watt bulb could be set up under a metal shield to create a sterilization chamber. At Home Depot you can get 4’ x12” or maybe 16” diameter vent pipe that comes flat. You have to snap it together to make a round duct. So ....I would leave it open and attach a 2x2 4’ long to reinforce each edge. It would look like a mini Quonset hut. You could drill some 1/16” + or- holes in the top and make some wire loops at the same spacing as the ends of the bulb and hang the bulb up near the top of the enclosure. Cap off one end and use the other end as a door. Or just place your item to be sterilized on a hard surface and place the Quonset hut over the item and then plug it in. Get a timer if you want.

I’m not smart enough to know how much light transmission would be needed or how much time, but this is a common item in water treatment and Prime available on amazon.

The one I bought for my job came with a SS tube for water flow, but you can buy the 55watt ballast and bulbs as separate items.

Thoughts...comments ....and constructive criticism is encouraged.

    Improvised PPE

Here is a Peakprosperity improvised PPE challenge.  People are improvising PPE all over the planet.  Are there any “do it yourself” designs that have been tested and proven to be effective?  How do we test our own designs to prove efficacy?  What materials are people using?  How can things be sanitized for reuse?
As an ER nurse in Michigan where we have not even had a confirmed case yet and PPE is already in short supply, I would be very grateful for help and information.

I think that many emergency personnel are prepared to work sick and “naked” if needs be, but anything we can do to increase are safety, effectiveness and longevity would be much appreciated.

If you go into battle prepared to die, you might live.  If you go into battle hoping to live, you will surely die.  ~ Samurai proverb.

    Blessed be,

    Seattle hospital no longer testing?

Seattle area hospital no longer testing for Coronavirus? Says it’s already endemic and testing adds risk of more exposure at their hospital. HOW CAN WE STOP IF NOT TESTING!

“”””Can I be tested for COVID-19 at an EvergreenHealth Urgent Care or clinic?
In partnership with the CDC, we have updated our screening guidelines for COVID-19. We have halted performing nasopharyngeal testing in our outpatient clinics, including our urgent care locations.

    Here’s why:
The CDC has determined that COVID-19 is now endemic, meaning that the virus is now considered to be regularly found in our region amongst our population. Previously, only individuals who had previously known risk factors (including history of travel, exposure to a confirmed case), were considered high risk for acquiring the disease. There is increased risk of transmission when performing any nasopharyngeal testing.””””

    Elderberries...

I just ordered up a few more to plant to go with the native elderberries I already have growing here at home.  I have the red ones that are supposed to make you a little sick when consumed raw.  Figured I should add some of the black/purple elderberries into the mix.  There may be a huge demand for them soon/already.

    Singapore information poster

I have been watching Chris’ videos for several weeks now (and very much appreciating them) and seem to remember that in one of them he showed a poster/flier which I think was from the Singaporean authorities, that gave very straightforward and honest information to it’s citizens about the virus. If anyone knows where I can find it again I would be very grateful. I would like to be able to pass it on.

UV light box on sale for $109 US

I posted info on the CoralUV light box previously.  It is now on sale for 109US!!   This was developed in 2018 by a couple in Toronto Ontario just south of where I live.  They used a   Kickstarter Program to raise the money to sell it in Canada and the U.S. and have plans to expand into Europe and Asia.  Either they have reduced the price to raise capital for their expansion or else they are one of the few businesses who are genuinely trying to help ( like  Chris) as opposed to many other places that have raised their prices on all things COV - 19 related. Testing info on their website, coraluv.com,  showed that it killed all  five microbes tested in ten minutes.   We don't know how long it would take for COV - 19 and I  read something about the SARS virus taking much longer.  Do your own research on times, methods and so on. I have one myself and would highly recommend it particularly due to the size ( 10.5" x 10.5" x10") and now it's a  great price.  I put in my Cpap mask, water tank, glasses, toothbrush, phone, car keys.  It will dry as well as  sanitize.   It could help sanitize a fibre mask before you isolate the mask for a set number of days. A half face mask would fit and I don't know if a full face is larger than 10 inches high.

Where I live I have yet to find  one single aquaintance or relative  who is  concerned and all think it is a bunch of hype over a seasonal flu.  In contrast,  the Asian community on the other side of town has been buying up whole shelves of supplies I am told by Home Depot.  My own family thinks Peak Prosperity has warped my mind, the stock market has bottomed  and life is  normal, the 28 cases in Ontario ( so far)  prove it is under control,  we will never run out of pharmaceuticals, our hospital system is the best in the world and can handle it and on and on and on.  So thankful to know there is  a group of like minded people on this site. Buy a CoralUV.  You won't regret it.   I don't know the manufacturer and this is not an ad LOL.

    Seattle quarantine site a joke!

    Hi Chris,

I live in the Seattle area.  The Kirkland outbreak is 30 mins north of me.  The reality here is that no officials seem to know what they are doing.  Everyone is just trying to follow what the CDC is saying which is so misleading.  Anyway, i wanted to point out that they  have opened a quarantine centre about 12 mins from where I live, which by the way is in a residential area with a group home nearby.  But get this:  there is no running water and sewer yet just portable toilets.  Based on your video from yesterday, isn’t there evidence that this virus can spread via human waste??!!

    elderberries

As I posted before, we planted domestic elderberries that grew and produced vigorously, and spread by root quickly.  The berries are larger than wild varieties.  That may have been the micro habitat where we were at the time.  We have since moved and I don't know how well they will do here.

We have lots of jam, wine and frozen berries, but no syrup.  Does anyone have a good recipe for syrup?

    Emergency PPE

Well. I was tryin to become an inventor before all this shit happened so i should atleast make a half decent attempt.

So here goes. When you have *absolutely NOTHING* but you still want some form of protection.

    1. PPE >suit< is not really needed. Your skin is a perfectly good PPE suit. Just don't expose any tears in it (AKA cover up cuts and bruises with something tight). If you throw your clothes in the dryer with a good amount of soap and wash it at a high temperature (65C or above) those will be fine, then if you take a shower with a good scrubdown, your skin will be fine too.

1b. Your nether regions need to be blocked off though. Clothes will generally do the trick but maybe pads are an idea for women simply because the problem is larger. I don't think regular people need to do this but nurses being continuously exposed....

    2. Gloves are sort of mandatory simply because of hand doing the most, so you want another layer of protection for cuticles, lil cuts and scraps that sort of thing. Just instead of taking them off, sanitize the gloves like you would your hands anyway.

    3. Eye gear: swim goggles. If it's water proof it's virus proof, essentially. Besides it's not like this virus particles are homing missiles; all they have is numbers and luck. You can wear your swim goggles in the shower for disinfecting.

    4. Mask. Alright time to get creative. If you absolutely have nothing and want a mask, this is what i came up with (if nothing else good for a laugh):

Ya find a coca cola can (or a half liter big one if you want extra space), make sure the top is popped. Get a sheet of toilet paper (3/4 ply) and secure it around the top (i didn't have a rubber band so i used yarn). That'll be your filter both ways. Then, cut a cross in the middle with a long horizontal line and either one or two vertical lines (i think two will end up being more comfortable).

Bend the sides inwards so you don't have any sharp edges digging into your lips and the steel's thin enough to be sculpted a bit. You can replace the "filter" anytime with simply a new sheet of toilet paper. I didn't have any rubber bands to secure it to my face, otherwise one on each side around the can and around my ears should do.

Then use something to pinch your nose cause i don't think that'll reach.

No need to keep making new cans either; Just dump the whole thing in a bucket of bleach water, remove the toilet paper and toss it, then rinse the can clean and put another filter on there.

If you wanna go fancy you can always make an exit valve too. Just cut some excess material from a 2nd can or something, puncture a hole somewhere in the can, then ducttape the extra material over it, but only tape it horizontally so air can escape across the sides; and make sure it's NOT taped down tight. It also needs to be on the outside of the can. When you exhale, you push the material away and air escapes via the sides while when you inhale you pull the material against the can and it closes the airway. Just as long as it costs no effort to breathe out and super alot of effort to breathe in (meaning the air is forced to go via the toilet paper one way and via the valve the hole the other).

See; the trick to making a custom mask is trying to minimize the surface area over which you draw breath. Because drawing air through a filter costs effort. Physics doesn't like effort. It likes easy. So if you simply hold a paper towel to your face, air will come around the sides instead of through it. Because that's easier.

So if you limit your breathing area from all around your mouth to one specific area, a small area, like the popped top of pop, it becomes much easier to actually filter that area. Because the air has *no choice* but to go through that small filter area.

The small filter area is easy, any hole will do. The hard part is closing off your mouth to that limited area. That's what the can is for: Hard material (supported by soft material for comfort) simply makes a stronger seal; therefor, more pressure can be applied to the limited area before air once again takes the easy way in; around the mask.

Just follow those concepts anything will do.

Projecting Hospital Bed & Mask Shortfalls

Follow this fascinating thread as a PhD biologist/engineer shares a thought experiment on bed and mask depletions by the end of May. Conservative assumptions re: exponential spread, so this could be an optimistic projection. Crikey!

I found this thread and the link to coronavirus dashboards at Naked Capitalism.

Fresh Fish is health food and Corn is not?

You might want to dive into the scientific studies on nutrition conducted over the last 40 years and ignore popular diet books and fads.  Nutritionfacts.org might be a good place to start.

I normally recommend forksoverknives.com, but your current ideas are so far off, I’m not sure you will get anything out of that.

    Germany vs Italy

The apparent difference in the severity of the epidemic between Germany and Italy (and likewise between South Korea and Iran etc) is indeed puzzling and interesting. I’m not that convinced yet about the different strains of the virus being more virulent than another. I think Italy is weeks behind the curve, and there are first of all lots of milder and asymptomatic cases undetected (and spreading the virus). Germany on the other hand may have got their hands on many more milder cases, and also in the early phase of the disease course; some of these will of course become more serious and critical. It would also be interesting to know how many of the German cases were imported and the ages of the patients. If I think about the situation here in Finland (19 cases so far reported), only one patient is elderly (so far), every other of working age or children. So, maybe in the early phase of the epidemic many of the patients are young enough to get only a mild disease, but later things get nasty when the elderly and more vulnerable part of the population gets infected.

    Cheers, FF

    Re: Improvised PPE

I found this package of  absorbent shelf liners at a large grocery near us. They look tightly woven, and I thought I might cut them up to be improvised face masks. Two per pkg, very cheap, like $1.29, each about the size of a placemat.  I have no idea how much they would protect, but they are the thickness of a few sheets of construction paper, can’t see through it, washable.  Better than naked!

    Ethics of altruism? No thanks.

I am not a sacrifice to other people.  Mandatory self-sacrifice is treason to your own life.  If that is a requirement to have ethics or morality, as defined by you, I will be "devoid" and be ok with that.  Charity and self-sacrifice for people and values you hold dear are choices and doing good is it's own reward.

Elderberries sure are pretty in bloom!

I hope the black varieties I plant will spread as well as the native varieties seem to.  I have a path in the woods with a stretch of elderberries on one side that goes maybe a hundred feet or so... absolutely beautiful in bloom and when covered in fruit.  The critters love 'em.

another option for a UV light box

I am sure the UV light box suggested by LK is a good unit. Here is another option. This one is for sale at Amazon at what seems to be a reasonable price.  It gets very high reviews. I am going to start using it regularly for my CPAP stuff, with or without the corona virus. (I have no financial interest in this at all.)

    Serological test for SARS-CoV-2?

This is preliminary, the press release is from February 21, and hasn’t been updated since. Hope they (or someone else with a reliable test) get the approval soon. Serological assays will be crucial to assess the proportion of mild and asymptomatic infections.

    96 M cases

I think that assessment is way off - i would apply a fact of ten to their deaths and hospitalizations.. And a factor of 2 for total cases..

I suspect Thailand is keeping their numbers hidden due to the prevalence of its tourist sex trade industry. If tourists are massively infected with the virus and return to homes all over the globe Thailand will be vilified as a source in the same way China has. My two cents on that...

First Hand Account from LifeCare Center where 1st patient died.

Chuck was roommates with the first man who died at the LifeCare Center in Kirkland Washington. His son became infected by visiting....This was posted by a friend of mine who knows the family. I am encouraging them to share as much as they are comfortable with.

My friend's first-hand account of her husband's infection and hospitalization with the Coronavirus. Scott is younger than I am, and is otherwise very healthy. From Wendy Sedlacek--The Corona Virus has hit very close to home for us. Scott’s father, Chuck, is a resident of the LifeCare Center in Kirkland, the epicenter of the US outbreak. The inability to get him services, care and release has been beyond frustrating. He has yet to be tested for the virus a week following the first death. Getting answers and assistance has been nearly impossible. Scott was exposed to Covid19 at LifeCare and was hospitalized on Wednesday. He is home now and much better. Understand that this virus is much more prevalent and more virulent than you are hearing. Scott is in robust health and it hit him like a train. We are so frightened for Chuck and the other residents who remain at the center. In spite of grand promises from local politicians to national leaders, our experience has taught us that the process in place to get tested is nonexistent and hotlines are inept. No one knows what is going on and this virus is unknown and unpredictable. Be proactive in keeping yourself well. Please isolate your elderly family and friends. The hospital advised us to consult this Johns Hopkins site for the for most reliable information.”

Chris .....if you would like to talk directly to these  people I can try to facilitate that. I think there is a lot to be learned from this story.

    Much Appreciated!

Thank you, sir. I'm usually able to keep up with the literature but that particular article eluded me. JAMA's website wasn't agreeing with my search. People like numbers, that's why I'm hoping the packet of data findings will open the eyes of the agency I work for and we can start getting more proactive with our mitigation strategies. Best of luck out there. Be safe and thanks for all the time and energy your putting in to help us all out. You'll get your reward, lord willing.

Good memory! I was part of the conversations back when we first discussed hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant, but the info posted in this thread about the different concentrations of rubbing alcohol made wonder if there might be a similar issue with hydrogen peroxide. I checked what I have here and it is a 3% solution but am now wondering if this is a high enough concentration. I believe I read somewhere that an 8% concentration would kill Covid-19 so wanted to double-check if the 3% works or if I need something else. If you don't mind posting the link you mentioned again, I would appreciate it.

Not one virus, but many strains all at once

Little by little I am coming to the conclusion that these strains of viruses are not the same in every country. And the reason is the experiences seem to be differing as do the necessary responses. While I do not know this as fact I can still make a few observations and one of them is that in some countries the disease is incredible virulent while in others it seems less so yet kills more people. And then in the next country it is both virulent and quite deadly. Iran and Italy seem to have a similar version of this Wuhan Virus with unusually high mortality rates compared to Singapore and even South Korea.

We may be getting hit on multiple fronts and the lack of testing, transparency and truthfulness will ensure that it does not come to the public's attention until we are deep in the crisis. Naturally I am very suspicious about the extent of the illness in Iran but not for the reasons you might guess. Inside that country they are already accusing Israel and the US for unleashing a bioweapon on their unprepared population. But the idea that their long time foes are behind this is too obvious for my liking. It really stinks. I agree with the idea its a bioweapon of course but my suspicion is its a third country behind the widespread infections there leaving the US looking like the obvious perpetrator.

Lets just say its very nasty politics and yes, I think this is the Chinese Communist Party busy at work as we already know they are simultaneously at work accusing the US of deliberately causing this disease outbreak inside their own country. No doubt the idea was hatched to spread Corona inside Iran as the crisis unfolded in Wuhan as cover for the CCP since they could later turn around and point to the facts as "China got attacked and so did Iran"! ...its obviously the Americans behind it. Great propaganda of course and it will likely be effective behind their great Wall of Misinformation.

And of course there continues to be substantial doubt about how much influence Chinese leaders have had on the World Health Organization and its idiot leader, Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. I am truly sorry for the Ethiopian people that he is now officially one of their nations most famous countrymen. Right up there with that war criminal Mengistu Haile Mariam who fled Ethiopia in 1987 after his Communist Derg government was toppled. That guy was responsible for a genocide in his own nation involving the starvation of a million of his countrymen.

And personally I do not see much difference between one who kills for political reasons and power versus another whose corrupt practices sold out the world and allowed a global pandemic to form. If not for this one guys actions in refusing to declare Covid19 a pandemic (when it was obviously a pandemic) this disease might still be contained inside China. We can only imagine the size of his blood money payoff  from the Chinese but it must have been worth it.

To this very day he continues to refuse to admit there is a pandemic taking place. Its just an emergency according to him because it has not gone worldwide. And yet read his comments of March 3rd media briefing on COVID19 where he uses the words "global" "globally" and "world" seven times in a single short speech proving beyond any doubt he is quite conscious that this emergency we all face, (in part due to his corruption and incompetence), is a worldwide event.

    In other words, a PANDEMIC.

"This virus is not SARS, it’s not MERS, and it’s not influenza. It is a unique virus with unique characteristics....While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease. Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than  1% of those infected.....we are concerned that countries’ abilities to respond are being compromised by the severe and increasing disruption to the global supply of personal protective equipment – caused by rising demand, hoarding and misuse. Shortages are leaving doctors, nurses and other frontline healthcare workers dangerously ill-equipped to care for COVID-19 patients, due to limited access to supplies such as gloves, medical masks, respirators, goggles, face shields, gowns, and aprons.".....COVID-19 causes more severe disease than seasonal influenza........Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.......We’re also working with governments, manufacturers and the Pandemic Supply Chain Network to boost production and secure supplies for critically affected and at-risk countries. Globally, it is estimated that PPE supplies need to be increased by 40 per cent..."

You get the picture. This guy has got to go. A few million unnecessary deaths are on the way because of his gross incompetence. Like I said, no better than Mengistu Haile Mariam in the final analysis. He is going to wear this . And for all I know the reason he got the job in the first place was that a fall man was needed and he was suitable for the job.

But as far as I am concerned the Chinese CCP were behind this from the beginning. Somebody paid for his silence where the truth was needed and somebody promoted him to give such gushing compliments about how the situation in China was handled so effectively. Are we too stupid to put to and two together and not come up with the right answers?

Not bloody likely. He is a sellout and we all know it.

    The whole pathetic speech:

    The Hydrogen Peroxide NCBI Study

mch: H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) for inactivating virus on masks
    according to this article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/203115

“H2O2 in a 3 percent concentration inactivated all the viruses under study within 1–30 min. Coronavirus and influenza viruses were found to be most sensitive.”

If you need to reuse a mask, soak in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 30 min, then rinse in water and dry. H2O2 should penetrate inside the mask fibers better than UV"

The political calm approach. “We are a nation at war”

A very calm and realistic outlook.
Basically limiting the spread of COVID-19, via a systematic and warlike focus around this virus.
Social distancing, isolation of everyone with symptoms and close contact. Mitigation of interpersonal contact via school closures. Working remotely where possible.
For the hope of developing a vaccine in a world record time of 12-18 months. A further 12 months of ramping up production and vaccination of the world. Hoping the virus does not mutate significantly.
The life we know and the economic and financial impacts are almost incomprehensible.....
a public mindset of we are at war and the real world way of cleanliness and limiting exposure.
And the hope summer is good. Winter is bad. Maybe climate change is good ..... sorry Greta.

But I don’t know if our generations of soft capitalistic greed and want will allow a single minded focus like this  it’s definitely not what any politicians have shown clear leadership about

    Hydrogen Peroxide, Use care

3% hydrogen peroxide is not a problem.  However much stronger solutions are available and some people might want to buy these to dilute.  My experience, in a laboratory, is with 30% H2O2.  It is a very strong oxidizer.  One of my coworkers unboxed a bottle of 30%.  It was housed in a sealed plastic bag and had leaked a bit in shipping.  With gloves on, she removed the bottle from the bag, put the bag in the sink with running water, then wiped down the bottle and bench top with paper towels, deposited in a waste basket.  In about two minutes, the waste basket was on fire.  So have lots of water around if using strong H2O2.

    of course

Lab grade is not the same as household strength. But, for those who dont know and somehow get acees to lab grade, that's a good tip.

The stuff at walmart, grocery outlet and dollar store, no need to dilute

RE : Fresh Fish is health food and Corn is not?

If we stay with the facts. The Americans have been following dietary guidelines. They reduced meat intake, they reduced fat intake, they increased carbohydrates and increased fruit intake. They have been good.

The results are devastating. They are the most unhealthy people on the planet. I looked at your Nutritionfacts.org. The same old song. With a creepy guy with, yes, a book.

About the fish we eat. Fat fish like herring and mackerel , no older then one year to limit the mercury intake. Sushi is NOT healthy.

    mask shortage

Dtrammel- just wanted to comment that the entire USA is short of masks. I listed to the senate briefings re stockpile and said we did not have enough ventilators NOR masks.  That is why Washington is not being given any. I imagine supplies are being stockpiled and rationed for our VIP.

MY DIY idea for masks: high merv filtration AC filters. They are quite dense and I bought charcoal fabric to layer against on the exterior, lined both sides with cotton musil (very thin). AC filters seem to be in supply still, i would also recomend a scarf to cover head, ears, mouth over mask as an additional shield to mucous. Of course hot and uncomfortable for long time wear.

HOUSTON TX is still blissfully ignorant even after finding positive patient at a large catholic church in the wealthiest zipcode (St. Cecilia is the name).

Thanks Torii! Epidemiologist's slide of US projected Covid impact

In US, 96M Covid cases, 480K deaths projected

Thanks, Torii!  That is an awesome find with stunning information from a credible source!  For quick viewing, I'm posting a graphic of the 2/26/20 American Hospital Association presenter's slide (see below) that was embedded in the article you linked in your comment.

American Hospital Assn. Covid-2019 Resources; testing, respirators update

I haven't had a chance to delve into this yet, but I usually find useful information from reading industry association public-facing content, and "insider" member-only content like Torii's slid above when I can get it. 😉

Updates and Resources on Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

    https://www.aha.org/2020-01-22-updates-and-resources-novel-coronavirus-2019-cov

I did find this in AHA's most recent Covid-2019 Update:

    Re: testing and respirators:

"America’s Health Insurance Plans yesterday said it is taking action to make sure plans cover COVID-19 diagnostic testing and reduce service barriers, such as prior-authorization and cost-sharing. AHIP also is encouraging the use of telehealth and at-home care to widen access."

"Meanwhile, Washington state’s Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler also yesterday ordered state health insurers to waive deductibles and copays for COVID-19 testing; suspend prior authorization requirements for treatment or testing; and allow other providers to treat enrollees at no additional cost if an insurer does not have enough medical providers in its network to provide testing and treatment."

"The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has created fact sheets for Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and some individual and small group market private insurance plans that explain coverage for COVID-19-related health care services."

"CMS also released a second Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System code for laboratories to use to bill for certain COVID-19 diagnostic tests in an effort to increase testing and track new cases. Medicare will accept these codes starting April 1."

"LabCorp last night made a COVID-19 test it developed available for clinicians. The qualitative assay test using PCR technology is validated for use with respiratory samples, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, and broncheoalveolar lavage. Samples should be sent to LabCorp, and patients should not be sent to LabCorp locations for testing. Quest Diagnostics also will launch a molecular-based assay COVID-19 test service March 9."

"To encourage manufacturers to immediately increase production of N95 respirators for use by health care professionals while providing reassurance to manufacturers that they will not be left with excess supplies once the COVID-19 response subsides, HHS announced it will purchase 500 million N95s for the Strategic National Stockpile over the next 18 months. In its announcement, HHS says that private sector orders would be filled before the SNS order."

"The World Health Organization today said 20 COVID-19 vaccines are in development, and several clinical trials of therapeutics are underway. WHO is monitoring active pharmaceutical components made in affected countries in case an effective treatment is found using those ingredients."

    Package shipping and mail service

Any best guesses as to when these will be compromised?  Over a week ago my postmaster said mail service with Italy had been suspended.  I am sending a registered package, Monday, and hopefully receiving all packages by end of the week.  I will spray down and quarantine packages, esp. those from Washington.

    Facts

I see no facts in your post, rather speculation.  As I said, science regarding nutrition is readily available, just not from the USDA.  Whether you chose to avail yourself of the science is entirely up to you.

Gov Cuomo - has it close to right

First lets talk about people on self quarantine. These people are acting like its some soft of suggestion, and not mandatory because its self imposed. I guess they would rather be locked in a cell. I know cuomo implied there may be some additional actions they could take about these people blowing quarantine.. Not sure if he meant locking them up to contain them or perhaps pressing legal criminal charges against them. I would think the latter is definitely really possible - we know S Korea will fine people something ridiculous and like something up to 2 years in jail. The point here is we have laws in most states that already cover this - its called reckless endangerment, meaning, this is acting in disregard to human health and welfare that one would only expect someone to be harmed or killed. So check.. we have laws to lock up these people. or fine them as well. and restitution.. So yeah..

Then we have the hoarding and gouging of medical supplies. There are laws on the books for this as well. I think people who will buy face masks at .50 and sell them at 100 times face value, are just sick.. I know its all about free enterprise - its a capitalistic country.. but what if had enough money to buy the entire beef industry in the country - and then decide to charge 100 times current prices.. i guess all for capitalism and free enterprise.. but in this case we are talking about potential of people dying without medical and public being able to access these resources economically.. during a community crisis. There are laws on the books in many states following hurricanes etc. where people did this. It seems Amazon is assisting AG in sniffing out these people. especially where the supplies may have been obtained illegally. I think some of these folks selling masks and gloves and other ppe and sanitizers will be going to jail. We know now that facebook instagram and others are removing their ads. I would not want to be a guy who hoarded masks and sold them at 40$ each right now..

Ever Wonder How The 1918 Virus Was Resurrected??

Tucker mentioned that we had the 1918 flu in Alaska.

    Thought you might not know.

Thats right they came to Alaska and dug up a woman buried in the permafrost and extracted it from her dead tissue.

An Alaskan Village Holds the Key to Understanding the 1918 Spanish Flu

“In August 1997, a scientist named Johan Hultin from San Francisco traveled to Brevig Mission and, with permission of the town’s elders, excavated the local cemetery to try and unearth a victim of the outbreak buried deep within the frozen tundra. He hoped to extract a sample of human tissue that contained a hibernating specimen of the 1918 flu virus. On August 23, Hultin found a female body seven feet down that was remarkably well preserved“

Unfortunately, having the 1918 strain has not seemed to help us much now.  Or, maybe, it helped to create the current one.  We will never know.

A lot of us in 1997 were against resurrecting the 1918 virus.   C’est La Vie

    hydrogen peroxide %

3% is sufficient, and that is the normal % for what we buy for household use.

    Abstract
The effect of H2O2 on adenovirus types 3 and 6, adenoassociated virus type 4, rhinoviruses 1A, 1B, and type 7, myxoviruses, influenza A and B, respiratory syncytial virus, strain Long, and coronavirus strain 229E was studied in vitro, using different H2O2 concentration and timec of exposure. H2O2 in a 3 percent concentration inactivated all the viruses under study within 1--30 min. Coronavirus and influenza viruses were found to be most sensitive. Reoviruses, adenoviruses and adenoassociated virus were relatively stable. H2O2 is a convenient means for virus inactivation.

I understand the issue of the common good, and the health implications of not staying self quarantined but how do you handle people who financially can't afford to self quarantine for 3 weeks?

Let's be honest, a huge minority of people in this country just CAN NOT take off their work, sick or not. They would starve, lose their homes, lose their jobs, some cases lose their children. And forget about the cost of medical treatment and drugs.

Unless some mechanism is put into place that will cover that, people WILL break quarantine. We allocated what? 12 billion for fighting this crisis. For 7 billion more we could pay everyone in the country $2000 as a "Virus Allotment". That might keep people indoors.

Chance of it passing though = snowball in he!!

    Re - Devil’s Advocate

David, I suspect there are currently folks meeting and discussing UBS (universal basic income). If and when its warranted and implemented, the roll-out will be like magic. Oh, look what we had in our back pocket, just in case. Because of the virus, in conjunction with a payment chip in your arm, cause money’s dirty.

Funny they can’t make test kits but they can figure out how to get us to be ushered through lines, take off our shoes, lift our arms and answer canned questions like trained monkeys. Or maybe that’s cows, sheep?

We could do a what’s next. Thread?

    Not Suggesting a UBI

I can understand the worry so many have with the thought of a government controlling your very income, but I'm not suggesting a UBI in this situation but a one time cash payment to everyone to help them cover the expenses this crisis is going to cause the regular people.

You've already got the airline, hospitality and cruise ship industries clammering for a bailout, because of the expected fallout from people not using any of those services. Wait until hospitals and insurance starts getting serious hits to their bottom line.

They all forget that when their previous customers are homeless and destitute, they aren't going to be in business anymore either.

Like I said, chance of it happening are slim. Expect the poor and the lower middle class will get slogans and platitudes as they are thrown under the bus of big business.

    Prisons for profit

I would think prisons will get lots of tlc. Inmates bring in a lot of money. You can't have them dying and have empty beds. Empty beds are lost revenue. Maybe prisoners will get better long term care. They are an investment after all.

Fear, anger among US airport screeners, health workers as pandemic spreads

U.S. airport screeners, health workers plagued by fear and anger as coronavirus spreads

"Two screeners, both working at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), had tested positive for the virus. "

'“It was bound to happen,” said a veteran CDC medical official involved with screening who spoke on condition of anonymity. “They are assuring us we are safe. If we were safe, screeners would not be getting sick.”'

"...Around the country, doctors, nurses, emergency responders and government health workers say they are increasingly concerned at what they see as inadequate protections and preparation for workers in the trenches. Many complain of poor training and communication in the workplace as well as insufficient equipment and staffing."

"...One doctor at a major hospital system wrote in email to professional peers around the country that his staff is quickly burning through supplies of protective gear and struggling to properly fit workers with masks."

    '“Not sustainable,” he said."

"The March 3 email, shared with Reuters by a recipient on condition that the doctor’s name and affiliation be withheld, said the heavy volume of cases scotched plans to furlough workers who had been potentially exposed to the virus."

"In one example, the doctor wrote that treating just two patients led to the potential exposure of 350 people. Instead of keeping the staffers at home, the physician said, they were allowing them to work and monitoring them for symptoms."

    Any updates on Thailand?

If anyone has more info about the situation in Thailand, I am all ears.  My daughter who lives in Seattle is there on Ko Samui, an island in the Gulf of Thailand, leading a yoga retreat.  Yeah I know. She has a lot of preventatives with her and is being careful.  The ridiculous thing is that she genuinely isn't sure that she wouldn't be safer staying there than coming back to Seattle. I said well 1) Thailand isn't being at all clear about what is happening there, 2) you don't speak the language and 3) we don't know what the medical system is like there.   Even more ridiculous, she was super sick with a respiratory infection since early January and is only now since the last few days there feeling much better.  Sun, relaxation, super fresh food, etc. She flew to Bangkok thru Narita on Feb. 26 as I remember.

Not asking for a diagnosis of course, but wow what a weird ass conundrum.  So if anyone has better intel about the situation in Thailand, I would be grateful.

Missouri reports 1st Covid case; 400 total US cases to date, 19 deaths

US state of Missouri reports first virus case

:A St. Louis-area woman who recently traveled to Italy is the U.S. state of Missouri’s first confirmed coronavirus case.

St. Louis County Executive Sam Page said Saturday that the woman is in her 20s and is at home with her parents. She was returning home from Italy when she showed symptoms.

Page said the parents are not showing symptoms.

The Missouri announcement came the same day that neighboring Kansas also announced its first case of the virus.

The number of U.S. coronavirus cases swelled to 400, with cases in about half of the states. Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and Pennsylvania also recently reported their first cases. The total U.S. death toll has reached 19."

New Covid cases in/around Washginton DC, no cancellations planned

Officials confirm first coronavirus case in nation’s capital

"A man in his 50s tested positive Saturday for coronavirus — the first presumptively confirmed case in the nation’s capital — and another person who traveled through the city has also tested positive in Maryland, officials said.

District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said the man in the initial case started exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 in late February. He was admitted to a Washington hospital on Thursday and appeared to have no history of international travel and no close contacts to any other confirmed cases across the U.S., Bowser said."

"Virginia recorded its first case Saturday when a U.S. Marine stationed at Fort Belvoir was found to have the virus."

"President Donald Trump said he wasn’t concerned “at all” about the coronavirus getting closer to the White House after the first Washington case was confirmed and officials said an attendee of a recent political conference in the capital where Trump himself had spoken also tested positive for the virus."

'“No, I’m not concerned at all. No, I’m not. We’ve done a great job,” Trump said."

"Officials had no plans to cancel any events, including the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which starts on March 20 and draws thousands of tourists."

Life care is full of Sh*&^*(&

Their liaison said that they are an acute care facility and had 120 residents two weeks ago now 13 dead.. and only 63 remain.. anyhow they said they usually see 3-7 deaths a month.. yeah , if you believe that you are dumber than i thought 7 maybe the highest one month total ever. and 3 is probably generous.. if you did 7 deaths per mo in a facility of 120 people you would turn the whole population annually. That is not acute care or anykind of care .. that is hospice. So , i can tell you that is PR BS

They should change their name from life care to Death Care

    Thailand

I am not in Thailand , I was there from 1/10/20 to 1/23/20. I was in Bangkok for the first three days. Then Koh Phayam till we left. Asians have always been comfortable wearing masks. The air quality in Asia is horrible. The first coronavirus case I heard about happened when we were in Thailand. It was on Phuket. When we flew out of Bangkok on 23rd I would say 70% of the people were wearing masks in the airport. We always wear our masks on planes and you need them for the air pollution this time of year in Bangkok. We also use a product called Well Being Mist when we fly and in hotel rooms. It is anti viral, and anti bacterial. It is available from essentialartsonline.com(I have no financial interest in the company) As for the hospitals in Thailand I would say they are among the best in the world. For my work I visited dozens of them. If I needed hospitalization there is no place I would rather be.

I found this update and it is from 2 days ago. https://www.thesun.co.uk/travel/10811318/thailand-coronavirus-travel-advice-bangkok-phuket/

I agree it is a conundrum, but I think the Thais are on top of things much better than the US. The planes are being disinfected. The airport is pretty empty so getting out with the proper precautions might not be a problem but then go where? US? We all know this gubmint is not on top of it. If it were me I would find long term accommodations in Thailand (ifI could afford it) of course there is the issue of 90 day Visa. I don't know the procedure for extending

    Conundrum indeed

    math error

    dtrammel-

... We allocated what? 12 billion for fighting this crisis. For 7 billion more we could pay everyone in the country $2000 as a “Virus Allotment”. That might keep people indoors.

So $19 billion nets everyone in the country $2000 each?

    Let's see, 320 million people x $2000 each = ... well its actually $640 billion.  Not $19 billion.

For $19 billion everyone gets ... $59.  And change.

re: pet surgery protection cone pic...

I was seriously thinking of making a couple of these for myself and my 7yr old. It's like one of the first things I thought of (remember that dtrammel? I mentioned it when I first started posting here at ZH)

Of course, I was saying it in humor....  I guess now the option seems more realistic? Only thing missing is the activated charcoal homemade gas mask I've also brought up a couple times... (check your PM dtrammel and you'll see what I'm referring to)

    aerosolized fecal matter

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/04/12/hand-dryers-suck-bathroom-bacteria-and-blow-them-all-over-your-hands-study-finds/511723002/

Something else to consider is public restrooms. I hate public restrooms anyway so I try to avoid going in them. I read a report in the last year or so that talked about those air-spray dryers and how unsanitary they really are. If you search the issue, you'll find quite a few articles about this problem. (the link above is just one that I picked)

Basically, the toilets that are auto-flush are very strong in their flushing ability... that releases yuckiness into the air that is then captured by the "filters" in the hand dryers and sprayed all over your freshly washed hands. Whatever the "filters" don't catch winds up on you. Did I mention I hate public restrooms. Oh, and it doesn't matter if it's a gentle blow or a forceful one...

    Disgusting.
