For a start, lets stop left or right and see up and down. There was just an armed insurrection on capitol on Jan 6th fueled by same outrage you are talking about. Your outrage = Ad $$ for fox and “entertainment” radio show networks.  Your outrage is nothing but guaranteed votes for manipulating politicians . I call BS on this one. She is no epidemiologist and not qualified to tell what the trend should look like on All Cause Deaths.  Also, the work done by student is lousy at best – no statistical rigor or model explanation at all.  I wonder how does an economist can make a call on what the trend for mortality should look like or what model to be used to fit??  According to CDC the death rates have been slightly decreasing (e.g 2018) due to better cancer care .

I went to the same CDC site and got the same dataset. Did some basic plots and the sure enough 2020 is screaming loud and clear on COVID. 1. Subset the Jurisdiction to ‘United States’

2. Plot by Year and Week Number

3. Add all the causes to get the All Cause

4. Also, Note that last few weeks of 2020 are lower/incomplete due straggler data

The data is screaming loud and clear that 2020 has excess deaths and also deaths per week has been the highest in any of the years. (Which is trend reversal from last two years).

It explains in 3000 words the method used, assumptions made and limitations etc.. It is way more rigorous than the sloppy work an unknown economist and grad student put together.  A simple excel plot is enough to call BS on the economist and the student.

I think mask compliance has gotten so much better, so even though mobility is almost normal – its not spreading through community like grocery stores etc.. rather it is still being spread through small gatherings of people at hone. This is a great news that we can bring economy back withh masks on – however, our personal gatherings still have to wait ( without masks).
