Another rabbit hole that probably warrants discussion is medical trauma kits for EDC carry.
I think this is a great idea. Tomorrow I will start another thread in general discussions and list what’s in my kit. You never know what you are missing.
I too would rather run than fight if given the choice. I also understand that open carry (OC) may not give me the chance to run. I will do whatever I can to protect my daughter, wife, me, the public at large, in that order.
I completely agree with everything you said about not letting others know when you are carrying in general. You are correct that open carry is sometimes a liability and may make you the first taget in a bad situation. I disagree with you about not having time to react if you hear gunfire. I have followed many of your posts and I am quite sure you would be able to draw from most concealed carry positions and engage a target in under two seconds as can I and many, many others that train reguarly. This could be done even faster from an open carry. This would not allow a person to completely stop an attack but certainly would allow them the opportunity to reduce the possible casualties. As in the Tuscon incident and Fort Hood I truly believe that if 20% (I made this number up) of the crowd had been carrying the number of casualities could have been significantly reduced.
Another, and more likely aspect, would be a one on one confrontation in which you were being mugged or carjacked, etc. This is where I believe OC has some benefits it reducing your chances as being chosen as a target. Carry concealed my not give you the time necessary or the distance needed to present and engage as most of these crimes are committed at very close proximtiy and at a very fast pace, I have been involved in three such incidents in my life. This is also where SA comes in but thats a whole other topic.
I believe that open carry helps to promote firearms to the general public and helps to make carrying more “socially acceptable”. I also think that if a larger percentage of the population were to openly carry guns this would be a major deterrant to criminals. What I would like to see in the “news” is more stories of how John Q. Public stopped a criminal in his tracks. Most Americans are in the middle on firearms and those are the minds we need to think positivly about law abiding citizens carrying guns. It is our RIGHT to own and carry firearms. It is our DUTY as Americans to protect our families, ourselves and others that cannot protect themselves. Law enforcement does what it can but we all know they are usualy the last to arrive at a crime scene.
P.S. I completely agree with you about the world changing. In that situation my sidearm is just to fight my way to a rifle (FAL or Mac 90 being my fav’s). This is why my friends and I train hard and often.
I decided to go for both. I carry a Glock 20 which is a 10mm with 15 +1 capicity. It is a large weapon and is difficult to conceal, especially in Las Vegas in the summer, lol. I have found that using a small of the back holster will work for about 7-8 months of the year. The rest of the time I use a pack. Another down fall is the cost of the rounds, about 2x the cost of .40 cal. I was able to overcome this two ways. I reload all of my 10mm ammo that I shoot. The other way was to get a replacement barrel in .40 cal. This is a drop in replacement and can be swapped out as fast as I can tear down and reassemble the weapon. This allows me to train every weekend for very little cost.
I also open carry more often than I carry concealed. I understand opsec and carry concealed when necessary but I like to think that if more of us carried open it would help to promote acceptance from the general public. Not to mention detering criminals in their activity. I do get funny looks every once in a while. I also get nods or comments of approval from many people. Law enforcement in Vegas is really starting to fully support open carry, or any carry for that matter. As you can imagine when carring open I have a few conversations with the police. Very seldom am I even asked for my ID, most of the time the police officers just want to say “Hi”. I am sure they are just feeling me out and I appreciate their concern. I have been disarmed by the police while they check my credentials, but I have always been treated with respect. I think its time we stopped hiding our belief in the second ammendment and start shouting it from the rooftops. Up until now the only shouting is being done by the anti-gun crowd.
I have seen very few comments about open carry on this thread and would like to hear everyones input.
One shouldn’t go from week to week wondering if this week is “the” week. It could be but then again it’s like the weather.
I completely agree. Too many times I have thought the bowling ball is going to drop another stair only to have nothing happen. I try not to worry about any given time frame anymore. Its impossible to predict and trying to guess just raises the stress level. Priortize your prep and just keep chugging along.macro saidBut assuming the conspiracy theory is true… Today was a holiday, and I’m sure they will hit the market tomorrow with whatever shorts they would have otherwise implemented today.
They did try to hit the price on Tuesday and every time they pushed it down it came right back up again. Check out King World News weekly metal wrap from last Saturday. Dan Norcini (sp?) callled this action perfectly about halfway through his interview.
I agree that we don’t know who the REAL shorts are or what their purpose is, JP probably is frontrunning. Either way its still good for those of us that hold physical. Those shorts just create buying opportunities for us. The demand in China is off the charts and no matter how much they try to push the price down at the COMEX the overseas buyer just push it right back up again.
