Advice for Medical Student on Future

If you are surgically inclined, you could be content in any surgical field. Pick some field that suits your temperament;  fields have different age patterns of current practitioners (ease of setting up practice where you want to be); some are more dependant on support services (dependant on resources, and size of community); some are easier to shape your practice in (doing what you like to do or what others want you to do). What sort of practice and lifestyle go with your choice (all nighttime work?, people always grateful? or not? do you get to know people or are you content being a technician?), are you wedded to a high volume practice?

Ps. we are all in protracted decline, no one gets out of here alive

Here We Go Again… California Wildfires

Fires are part of the natural cycle, and our memories are blinkered by short time scales and wishful thinking. Living in the forested communities with fuel all around us (me too) without fear! Once was time that the mere mention of ‘crowning’ sent a reflex of dread though the adults in a room; now there is no recognition!

Thoughts on Hong Kong Virologist Warning

The timing of flight to Hong Kong (when it was still a safe haven with no extradition) to her exit from Hong Kong after the CCP takeover makes some sense. The timing of closure of the Houston consulate was the puzzle as their activity there has been known for years.

I was involved in the successful containment of SARS when I had my regional directors(MD) hat on, and it pains me to have seen the absence of memory and willful ignorance of lessons learned(?). I had mentally been prepared for the pandemic and its origins in early January, just not believing the lack of our governments intelligence (unlike New Zealand) and systematic falsehoods (Canada).

The relevant timing refers to her arrival and being interviewed in the US. Your bias may be showing.

Her timing coincides with the abrupt closure of the Houston consulate; maybe there is no connection, but the timing is there.

Thoughts on Hong Kong Virologist Warning

Reading a story line of apocalypse is captivating, but there are some potentially good thoughts to chew on. German and Swedish  cohorts that seem resistant to this virus have been reported at 60-80%. An explanation maybe (in some population groups) that there is enough cross recognition of parts of the virus to mitigate development of the disease state. It would also suggest that herd immunity/resistance could be reached with a very low % sero- positive for antibodies. It would also give an explanation for the curve of infections tailing off so quickly. Alternate explanations for variation between counties mortality rates seem more likely with the lack of correlations between lockdowns and beneficial effects.

I still don’t want to get it, and think the overwhelming evidence and circumstances surrounding its early days in Wuhan, point to the virology lab origin
