How a steel security door helps prevent "push in" home invasions (video)

Below is a video of an attempted "push in" armed robbery at a marijuana dispensary which demonstrates some important truths about how a steel security door can be used to prevent a "push in" home invasion at your home.  Actually, the business and the armed security guard who answers the door bell are using the steel security door bass-ackwards, and that forces the security guard into a completely preventable gunfight. But you can learn just as much, if not more, about how to do it right and how valuable a steel security door can be by watching this event.

Worst Hedges: Gold Mining, Silver, Platinum

Many people and even specialist websites and their so-called experts seem to be misguided that investing in silver is similar to investing in gold. Therefore, I would just like to share my clear finding that the only true "safe havens" are close-to-spot gold coins and ETF gold bullion. Silver does not hold value during a recession--and in addition--silver bullion and silver coins and self-held gold bullion are easily counterfeited and therefore this lowers their general trading value even if you can prove yours is genuine.

Securely Storing Bitcoin

I recently made my first purchase of Bitcoin from coinbase.com.  A couple of observations.

Holy cow was this intrusive. There are 3 ways to buy: PayPal, a bank account or credit card. First I tried the credit card route because it allowed for immediate purchase. Coinbase asked for the usual stuff, name, address , email. It also wanted cell phone number (this is where the intrusiveness started for me). For a credit card transaction they also required a picture (front/back) of my driver’s license!

Timely review of burglary prevention steps to be taken

Here's a local TV station's segment on preventing home burglaries.  They asked 86 people serving prison time for burglary to provide information and what they got was very revealing (though standard stuff).  Worth a watch (3:29), though you should take it all with a grain of salt, because these are people who got caught and convicted. wink

Locating resilient communities in Texas

Hello, everybody,

I have lived in the Houston area 37 years and am looking for a resilient community away from the big Texas cities for retirement. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

New products to improve the security of your doors

Doors are the most common points of entry for burglars and home invaders.  The fact is that most doors are designed to keep honest people out and are easily breached with one to three good kicks.  Rarely are tools needed to kick open a door, and burglars rarely bring the necessary tools because of that.  If I could only do two things to prevent or deter a burglary they would be: 1) install a monitored alarm system, and 2) fortify all your doors.  Below is an article reviewing door security hardware meant to be installed by homeowners.

New member from South Miami

We live, work and play in South Miami and truly enjoy it here.  We also enjoy our second home in Montana.  Interested in meeting other like minded neighbors to share ideas about a more resilient and increasingly self sufficient lifestyle.

I do not consider Miami survivable in the event of major social unrest and plan to panic early to avoid the rush getting out of town.  This sounds simply but not so easy when you think about it.

Thanks and I look forward to a quality discussion.
