James Howard Kunstler: It’s Time To Be Honest With Ourselves

The major systems our society relies on are failing
    by Adam Taggart

The ever-eloquent James Howard Kunstler returns to our podcast this week to discuss the dangers of the 'comprehensive dishonesty' he observes in our culture today.

We occupy ourselves with distractions (e.g., the fear du jour that our media continually manufactures) and diversions (e.g., our empty social media addiction), while ignoring the erosion of the essential systems around us. Making matters worse, the leaders we assume are focusing on these issues aren't or are woefully out of their depth.

It's time for society to take a hard look in the mirror and be honest about the shortcoming it sees. Identifying them then opens the door to deciding what to do about them.

Without the courage to be honest, we condemn ourselves to a failing status quo that likely has little remaining time left.

    Failure To Communicate

The mass media still doesn't "get" the resilience movement
    by Adam Taggart

    Tuesday, July 18, 2017, 1:06 AM

    20

The mass media simply doesn't have an established reference point for the concerned citizen who, through education and foresight, decides to take prudent steps today to reduce their future vulnerability while increasing their level of personal prosperity.

So, movements like ours get shunted into the existing constructs they do know, pretty much all of which exist on the "fringe".

Global macro economic data has been weak for many years, but there’s now a very real chance of a world-wide recession happening in 2017.

Why? A dramatic and worsening shortfall in new credit creation.

Off The Cuff: Roasting The Media

Now clearly one of this year's biggest turkeys
    by Adam Taggart

    Thursday, November 24, 2016, 9:48 PM

    34

In this week's Off The Cuff podcast, Chris and Charles Hugh Smith discuss:

    • Merchants Of Fear
      • Scare tactics abound these days
    • Paid Shills
      • There's an agenda behind the messages we receive
    • Persuasion & Propaganda
      • The "news" is attempting to trigger specific responses
    • An New Era Of Fascism?
      • If you look at the definition, it seems we're not too far off

First off, very happy Thanksgiving wishes from Chris and me to all our Peak Prosperity readers! We hope each of you is having a wonderful day of gratitude with people you care about. Despite all of the challenges and predicaments we discuss on this site, there is much in this world to be thankful for.

Now, in an entirely different tone, Chris and Charles work up some heat in this week's podcast, as both of them excoriate the degradation rampant in today's media. Rather than serving as a Fourth Estate, holding up truth to power and prioritizing truth and accuracy above all else, today have have a captive system serving the interests of political power (the State) and moneyed interests (corporations). As a populace, we are only as well-informed as our information is valid. How can we act effectively (including voting) when we can't trust the sources of the information we receive?

Is It Time To Prepare For War?

A serious question, given the escalating geopolitical risk
    by Chris Martenson

I am seriously entertaining preparing for war, and as I’ve written before, the nature of this next war could involve everything from trade battles, to cyber attacks, to financial system assaults,  a downing of the US electrical grid, to an actual shooting war  — perhaps one that escalates to a nuclear exchange.

When things are this obviously crazy, anything is possible.

    What To Believe Anymore?

Mainstream media requires a huge dose of salt these days
    by Chris Martenson

Well, here we are in the late hours of the latest and biggest bubbles that central banks can blow. The whole world is involved and no country will be immune from the aftershocks when these nested bubbles in virtually all asset classes burst.

In fact, the whole scheme requires that political and monetary solidarity be maintained. If anyone breaks ranks, then the whole thing could come crashing down.

    Unpacking the Propaganda

Debunking the increasingly fact-free financial media
    by Chris Martenson

    Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 11:06 PM

    20

Almost daily there's some article or another in the US financial press that is little more than marketing collateral for Wall Street.

Broken down, the message is always some version of: Now is a great time to buy stocks!

It's gotten to the absurd stage where everything justifies higher stock prices.

    Reality-Optional Economics

Cockamamie Stories Infecting the Body Politic
    by JHK

    Wednesday, July 9, 2014, 5:10 PM

    7

The total tonnage of economic malarkey being shoveled over the American public these days would make the late Dr. Joseph Goebbels (Nazi Minister of “Public Enlightenment and Propaganda”) turn green in his grave with envy. It’s a staggering phenomenon because little about it is conspiratorial; rather, it’s the consensual expression of a public that wants desperately to believe things that are untrue, and an economic leadership equally credulous, unmanned, and avid to furnish the necessary narratives that might preserve their jobs and perqs.
