Not sure where you get the 57 trillion from? Our debt is about 11, obligations in  Medicare A and Social Security and Medicare D Parts d is about 39, 10 , and 8, then we get 11 more in obligations for tarp, talp and the rest and add in the wars and I come up with nearly 80- trillion.

Plus, with a 1.86++++ trillion dollar deficit I know we are going to have interest on interest.

But I do like your question.

IMHO the answer lies in why Chris didn’t stay teaching and the way Enron did it’s books and the way politicians get elected by borrowing money to fund promisses.

Of course, TV probably has a lot to do with it.
