Re: Gulf Oil Spill Reaches Land
Some more interesting stuff:
…the deep oil rig that blew up was never under direct US supervision, by using clever laws written by our own legislators, rules were rigged so that corporations could avoid our own government. This was engineered by political bribes: politicians get lots of loot if they service these individuals in this way. By setting into motion, systems that allow bankers or oil drillers to evade our regulations is ‘corruption’ of such a degree, it could and should be called ‘treason’.
The Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico was built in South Korea. It was operated by a Swiss company under contract to a British oil firm. Primary responsibility for safety and other inspections rested not with the U.S. government but with the Republic of the Marshall Islands — a tiny, impoverished nation in the Pacific Ocean.
And the Marshall Islands, a maze of tiny atolls, many smaller than the ill-fated oil rig, outsourced many of its responsibilities to private companies.
In other words, just like all the small islands run by Queen Elizabeth, this is a pirate cove operation used by cynical billionaires so they can evade domestic laws and regulations that control pollution, enforce safety regulations protecting workers, evade taxes, etc. The US Congress has an obligation to halt this sort of scheming. Instead, Congress protects these schemers. Even as red ink or black oil pours out of broken wells all over our lands, Congress will evade responsibility and instead, put on fake hearings that leads to lots of lectures but zero changes to the system which allows these things to happen.
Obama is making a stupid speech tonight where he will tell us all will be well again once the blue birds fly over the rainbow and the Wicked Witch is dead. But this won’t happen. He should make a speech about how Congress is responsible for protecting America and letting foreign corporations evade our regulations, rules and laws, is dangerous and must stop. He could give a rousing speech about protectionism and why it is good, not evil. And even, god help us all, mention our immense trade deficit and why this is going to destroy America if we don’t fix it.
Much of our drilling for oil is being done by corporations that are increasingly foreigners or using offshore pirate coves to evade US government regulations. Once they set up overseas such as Dick Cheney’s Halliburton Corporation moving to a tiny Arab emirate to evade controls, these entities go from improving our GDP and trade statistics to being hostile to both. As all our computer companies use Chinese corporations to evade US labor and wage laws, they go from being sources of strength in our economy to actively destroying our economy.
The oil industry really hits us hard in this regard: our trade deficit began to get really bad, fast, when we hit the US Hubbert Oil Peak in 1973 and is an open sore today, bleeding our economy white. The entire excuse for drilling offshore in this fashion was, we will have more domestic oil and thus, save America’s bottom line. Instead, it enriches foreigners and makes things worse!
British Petroleum began as a military/imperial project in Iran by the Brits who wanted to use the natural resources of Iran for fueling British military and commercial shipping. BP was kicked out of Iran in the early 1950′s and this drove the UK and US to have a coup there and impose a BP-friendly dictator, the Shah of Iran, to rule there despotically and to hand over resources and profits to the US and UK.
