We have a difference in perspectives. Gun supporters tend to parse the numbers to rationalize away all the gun deaths that don’t fit within their neat framework of self defense. I, on the other hand, look at the total body count. My guess is (THIS IS A GUESS FOLKS) that the gun death numbers from legitimate self defense are far smaller than all the other causes of gun deaths out there. My point being that when there are lots of guns in the culture, there are lots of gun deaths. Although you would prefer to exclude all those deaths attributable to negligence, criminal conduct and ignorance, the fact remains that those attributes have always been part of the human community and always will be. If you wish to say that the so-called right to self defense (meaning right to carry guns) outweighs all other considerations, then I won’t quibble. We just have different perspectives. But you can’t just wish away the body count.
