    Beets and broccoli

AO, thanks for that recipe! I’ll give it a shot. (I can just tell how good beets are for me, by that rich, purple color, I just have to find a tasty way to prepare them. I do have a great red devil cake recipe that uses two cups of pureed beets. I should dig some of last year’s puree out of the freezer and make that again.)

Sager, I like Safewrite’s suggestion about calcium for broccoli. I had a crap year for broccoli last year, but this year I grew them in a new sheet-composted bed. It’s possible that the bed had a better soil mineral profile, but I’ve been thinking the fact that it’s in full shade until a little after noon each day has made the difference. I got gloriously large first heads and a pretty impressive second crop out of them this year. So perhaps partial shade might compensate for a hot summer? (We are at altitude here, 5k feet, so it increases solar gain by about 25 percent. Maybe shade for an hour or two less at sea level would produce the same result?)
