World Plan for the Garden of Eat'n

WORLD PLAN FOR THE GARDEN OF EAT'N    By Jim Miller; 8/29/09    

 

OVERVIEW: PHASE 1     Phase I's goal is to complete and test a prototype of the Garden of Eat'n. The project encompasses the “Locavore” production and distribution of food and energy and the social/economic environment which promotes collaborative action. There are several elements which serve as focal points for research and prototyping in both the physical and mental realm:

    1. The community of people and business resources will create net profits, leading to more capital investment and a higher quality of life, from one or more of these products and activities:

  • Fresh and frozen fish

  • Fish trimmings for pyrolysis (syngas and biochar), for fish oil extraction (biodiesel), and for compost

  • Fish fecal cake for pyrolysis into syngas and biochar

  • Fish fecal cake for composting which is sold to farmers or used on owned crop land.

  • Infused Biochar which is Agrichar and can be sold to farmers or used on owned crop land

  • Fresh, potable water from the Seawater Greenhouse and Drum Roll Steamer.

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables from the Seawater Greenhouse

  • Biodiesel from the syngas

  • Fresh water for crop production

  • Electricity

  • Heat for buildings, fish factory, and industrial processes

  • Hot and cold water

  • Steam generation

  • Refrigeration systems

  • Poultry, rabbits, and livestock

  • Woodlot products (lumber, firewood and biomass)

    1. Phase II

Phase II begins as the prototype of for each of the type of business activity is formed, funded, organized and developed as a progressive, egalitarian worker cooperative, operated on democratic principles. By way of experimentation, different models of cooperative communities could be use such as Findhorn, Scotland; and Mondragoʹn Cooperative Corporation, Spain. The rate of growth and management style is determined by consensus of the enrolled members according to a written organizational agreement signed by the members and by each new member upon admission.

Initially, the first will most likely need to rent land and build most of the infrastructure from net profits from the sale of products and services. The first “homestead” should be purchased after land use and zoning regulations have allowed for issuance of a planned unit development subdivision which conforms to the needs of the organizations.

    1. . PHASE III

In addition to development of more Phase II business communities, Phase III will expand the membership in other locations which favor a diversity of crops and products. Mutual support and networking will enable new groups to form, start businesses and trade with coops in the network. Phase III includes outreach by each cooperative to the local community. As an example, as newer technology replaces our older, patented technology, such older technology will be released as open source and licensed under GNU or Creative Commons license protocols.

  1. LOCATION

    1. . Elements. Location involves many elements, each of which must be found, examined, evaluated and integrated into the organization and management of each entity. Here is a brief sketch of how the criteria is evaluated:

LOCATION and OPERATION FOR BIOFUSION ALGAE, FISH AND PLANT FARM

East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Overview: Sites Numbers 1, 2 and 3 would support the prototype holistic system. When the testing is completed and the results are good, then additional locations along the seacoast would be established and saltwater algae and salt water fish which eat algae would be selected. While there is an estuary at East London which would likely have suitable water, there is no suitable land near the estuary.

 

Biofusion Site No. 3:

 

Features:

Topography: Table top portion shows historical farming using some contour methods. Assuming contours are 25 apart, the slope would be between 5 and 8 percent. Other crop pads appear to be steeper but manageable with proper berm contours on grade. There is adequate flat land for fish tanks. I assume the ownership goes from the river to the highway.

 

Soil. Exposed soil is a light tan, indicating little biomass and probably some clay and loam. Soil could be enhanced with Agrichar from pyrolysis of the fish meal and of the biomass from the extensive vegetation. Farming quickly exhausted the soil which explains the abandonment of croplands over the entire area.

 

Road. R346 is a paved road leading to East London and the harbor.

 

Utilities. We will need legal right to take water from the river and to install an inlet structure, a pump, and water lines to the top of the tablelands. Water from the fish farm would be used in farming the table lands. On the south slopes, we would install the Solar Furnace Collectors and SunTrackers and grow bush crops around the Suntrackers or use for animal grazing. We would generate our own electricity. We would obtain distilled water from the Drum Roll Steamer. If we build a Seawater Greenhouse at the lake or at the ocean, we can get distilled, potable water from that location also.

 

Zoning and land use regulations.

Unknown

 

Permits. Environmental and construction permits unknown. In order to use the wastewater from the algae/fish operation we may need a water discharge permit which would require some pre-treatment. The Eco-Machine will do the job of cleaning the water. We can polish the water with Zeolite, diatomaceous earth, or a sand filter.

 

Equipment and machinery. Normal agricultural equipment will be needed. Judging from the fallow ag lands, there is probably used ag equipment available for purchase. We will also need a large cement mixer, a backhoe, a skip-loader, carpentry tools to build the concrete forms, plumbing and electrical tools, metal working tools, and vehicles. Electric motors would be needed to move the algae water and the fish water.

 

Tanks. Fish and algae tanks would be made of concrete if cement is available If not, trenches can be excavated and pond liners used. See:

 

Fish processing. Ideally, the fish would be harvested for human consumption with the trimmings used for compost or as feedstock for pyrolysis. We would need some machinery to gut, skin and fillet the fish. We would need a flash freezer or individually bag and vacuum seal each fillet prior to freezing.d

Office and housing. We would need an administrative office and housing for all of the workers, plus a general purpose room for meetings. We would also need a climate controlled warehouse and work shops.

 

Revenue. Revenue streams can generate revenue from these sources (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Fresh and frozen fish

  • Fish oils for health food supplement, pharmaceuticals, biodiesel and biolubricants

  • Fish fecal cake for pyrolysis into syngas and biochar

  • Fish fecal cake for composting which is sold to farmers or used on owned crop land.

  • Infused Biochar which is Agrichar and can be sold to farmers or used on owned crop land.

  • Fresh, potable water from the Seawater Greenhouse

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables from the Seawater Greenhouse

  • Biodiesel from the syngas

  • Fresh water for crop production

  • Electricity

  • Heat for buildings, fish factory, and industrial processes

  • Hot and cold water

  • Steam

  • Refrigeration*

Biofusion will have available to it, licenses to use these technologies and entities:

  • Solar Furnace CHP

  • Drum Roll Steamer CHP

  • Hot Compressed Air Turbine

  • Permaculture

  • Worker Cooperatives

  • Intentional Communities, eco-villages and permaculture schools

COMMENT. Kentucky is at 37 degrees north, so the climate at East London at 32 degrees south is probably a bit warmer and probably has more rain. I need an accurate profile of the climate over several years.

 

*I am working with CreamPhysics which has invented a solid state refrigeration system so Biofusion could use it to freeze the fish fillets.

Do we really need this much thought to eat? Do we really need this much technology to live happily?

No.

We just need to not be afraid to die. And not let our fear out weigh our comapssion.

Intersting first post - nice.  Welcome to the site.

A good bit of this is already functioning in Milwaukee at Growing Power, Inc.  Have you checked with them?

Aquaponics, Bees, Compost, Livestock, Vermicomposting and Energy Initiatives are all discussed on their site.  Check the links for some of their wrokshops, seminars and intern opportunities.  They also have Regional Outreach Training Centers to facilitate remote projects and have several across the country - Kentucky and Florida I believe.

A good friend attended one of their seminars and couldn't say enough about them.

Mmmmm . . . . Algae! . . . . . I can't wait! . . . . . All I've had to eat is scrambled organic eggs with broccoli, organic bacon, fresh unhomogenized milk, homemade organic broccoli soup, homemade ground chuck steak, homegrown celery with organic peanut butter, homemade yogurt, and organic popcorn with butter from grass-fed cows and unrefined sea salt  . . . . But, I must say that the fecal fish cakes sound interesting . . . . . 

Yes, I know . . . . The algae and fecal cakes aren't for human consumption . . . . But I've gotta agree with Over the Illusion on this one, it does seem a bit more complicated than it needs to be  . . . Of course, we wouldn't want to empower people to be self-sufficient . . . .

I started scrolling through this and my head went into a spin, and I thought "this is precisely what I'm trying to get away from!"

Sorry, way too complicated, give me the simple life any day, I too agree with overtheillusion and cloudfire.... milking the goats in the morning is about as much complexity I need in my day!

this is simpler: aquaponics

Aquaponics is a melding of aquaculture and hydroponics. This sounds doable.

The fact that some are game to be or become self-sufficient does not mean that community/region-scale systems enabling others to be less than self-sufficient are irrelevant or useless.  Any of the designs might inspire or enable today's hesitant people to become tomorrow's movers and shakers.  We need them!

Let a thousand flowers bloom.  We cannot be certain of the distances we'll fall at unmapped cliffs.
