Various changes after crash in Iceland

This was in the news this morning:

Less garbage.
Total crash of car sales: Comparable to the year 1950.
People drive less AND slower.
Visits to dentists and barber shops dropping.
Visits to psychiatrists going up.
Prescription drugs related to depression, sleeping disorder and anxiety going up.
Sewing and general handy work going up.
Shoe sales dropping. This was mentioned specifically! :)
Cheaper clothing bought, brand names going down.
Cheaper cosmetic products bought.
Cheaper booze bought.
Divorces going down, people can't afford it (can't sell their houses etc.).
Travel abroad dropping.
Travel in Iceland by Icelanders going up, summerhouses, cottages and ski resorts never been more popular.

My local news mentioned explosion in demand for vegetable gardens provided by the local town.

These are not all bad news, actually.

heidi,

Interesting read. Do you have a link or something for us to learn more? You don't mention the news source.

Welcome to the board.

It is interesting we ((the people)) do not hear anything about this situation in the news.  Guess the Bankers, I mean Government (oh sorry again) the news does not think what could happen to us is not news worthy.

I'm getting a little (well maybe a lot) cynical about this too.

I hate being herded.

Hi Rog.

Here's a link to a website by an Icelandic young woman who calls herself Anya.

She translates current articles into English and also keeps a journal of her day-to-day life (with quite a bit about her feelings). She's had to move which interrupted things for awhile, but it seems she's back on and posting regularly again.

p.s. looks like we joined CM.com the same day.  Does that make us related?

Welcome, Orvar.

Good to see there's SOME news of the rest of the world being passed along.

Thanks Lori. We must be twins - fraternal of course.

At first glance, there seems to be a problem with drugs there... need more time to read.
