Truth Has Fallen and Taken Liberty With It

Paul Craig Roberts saying goodbye?  He served his country and served his readers, it is really sad to see him go under these circumstances. (Paul Craig Roberts was an editor of the Wall Street Journal and an Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.)

There was a time when the pen was mightier than the sword. That was a time when people believed in truth and regarded truth as an independent power and not as an auxiliary for government, class, race, ideological, personal, or financial interest.

Today Americans are ruled by propaganda. Americans have little regard for truth, little access to it, and little ability to recognize it.  Truth is an unwelcome entity. It is disturbing. It is off limits. Those who speak it run the risk of being branded “anti-American,” “anti-semite” or “conspiracy theorist.”

Today many whose goal once was the discovery of truth are now paid handsomely to hide it. “Free market economists” are paid to sell offshoring to the American people. High-productivity, high value-added American jobs are denigrated as dirty, old industrial jobs. Relicts from long ago, we are best shed of them. Their place has been taken by “the New Economy,” a mythical economy that allegedly consists of high-tech white collar jobs in which Americans innovate and finance activities that occur offshore. All Americans need in order to participate in this “new economy” are finance degrees from Ivy League universities, and then they will work on Wall Street at million dollar jobs.

Economists who were once respectable took money to contribute to this myth of “the New Economy.” And not only economists sell their souls for filthy lucre. Recently we have had reports of medical doctors who, for money, have published in peer-reviewed journals concocted “studies” that hype this or that new medicine produced by pharmaceutical companies that paid for the “studies.” The Council of Europe is investigating the drug companies’ role in hyping a false swine flu pandemic in order to gain billions of dollars in sales of the vaccine.

The media helped the US military hype its recent Marja offensive in Afghanistan, describing Marja as a city of 80,000 under Taliban control. It turns out that Marja is not urban but a collection of village farms. And there is the global warming scandal, in which NGOs. the UN, and the nuclear industry colluded in concocting a doomsday scenario in order to create profit in pollution. Wherever one looks, truth has fallen to money. Wherever money is insufficient to bury the truth, ignorance, propaganda, and short memories finish the job.

I remember when, following CIA director William Colby’s testimony before the Church Committee in the mid-1970s, presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan issued executive orders preventing the CIA and U.S. black-op groups from assassinating foreign leaders. In 2010 the US Congress was told by Dennis Blair, head of national intelligence, that the US now assassinates its own citizens in addition to foreign leaders.

When Blair told the House Intelligence Committee that US citizens no longer needed to be arrested, charged, tried, and convicted of a capital crime, just murdered on suspicion alone of being a “threat,” he wasn’t impeached. No investigation pursued. Nothing happened.

As an economist, I am astonished that the American economics profession has no awareness whatsoever that the U.S. economy has been destroyed by the offshoring of U.S. GDP to overseas countries. U.S. corporations, in pursuit of absolute advantage or lowest labor costs and maximum CEO “performance bonuses,” have moved the production of goods and services marketed to Americans to China, India, and elsewhere abroad. When I read economists describe offshoring as free trade based on comparative advantage, I realize that there is no intelligence or integrity in the American economics profession.

While Washington worries about “the Muslim threat,” Wall Street, U.S. corporations and “free market” shills destroy the U.S. economy and the prospects of tens of millions of Americans. Americans, or most of them, have proved to be putty in the hands of the police state.

Americans have bought into the government’s claim that security requires the suspension of civil liberties and accountable government. Astonishingly, Americans, or most of them, believe that civil liberties, such as habeas corpus and due process, protect “terrorists,” and not themselves. Many also believe that the Constitution is a tired old document that prevents government from exercising the kind of police state powers necessary to keep Americans safe and free.

I was associate editor and columnist for the Wall Street Journal. I was Business Week’s first outside columnist, a position I held for 15 years. I was columnist for a decade for Scripps Howard News Service, carried in 300 newspapers. I was a columnist for the Washington Times and for newspapers in France and Italy and for a magazine in Germany. I was a contributor to the New York Times and a regular feature in the Los Angeles Times. Today I cannot publish in, or appear on, the American “mainstream media.”

The American corporate media does not serve the truth. It serves the government and the interest groups that empower the government.

America’s fate was sealed when the public and the anti-war movement bought the government’s 9/11 conspiracy theory. The government’s account of 9/11 is contradicted by much evidence. Nevertheless, this defining event of our time, which has launched the US on interminable wars of aggression and a domestic police state, is a taboo topic for investigation in the media. It is pointless to complain of war and a police state when one accepts the premise upon which they are based.

These trillion dollar wars have created financing problems for Washington’s deficits and threaten the U.S. dollar’s role as world reserve currency. The wars and the pressure that the budget deficits put on the dollar’s value have put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block. Former Goldman Sachs chairman and U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson is after these protections for the elderly. Fed chairman Bernanke is also after them. The Republicans are after them as well. These protections are called “entitlements” as if they are some sort of welfare that people have not paid for in payroll taxes all their working lives.

With over 21 per cent unemployment as measured by the methodology of 1980, with American jobs, GDP, and technology having been given to China and India, with war being Washington’s greatest commitment, with the dollar over-burdened with debt, with civil liberty sacrificed to the “war on terror,” the liberty and prosperity of the American people have been thrown into the trash bin of history.

The militarism of the U.S. and Israeli states, and Wall Street and corporate greed, will now run their course. As the pen is censored and its might extinguished, I am signing off.  - complete article link

Hello V,

I'd love to have a couple beers with you to discuss 9/11.  Equally, I'd hate to be a moderator watching 9/11 discussions get emotional and downright nasty.  It's a bridge too far to expect anyone to change their opinion over forum discussions, that takes personal research and verification.

I think that Paul Craig Robert's point is that the fidelity to truth is vanishing from our society as it is spun and diced to lead to conclusions rather than to inform.  Even experts, scientists and economists seem to sell out to foundations and grants.  Or, they are kept on a short leash by their principals and government.

You hit an interesting point when you asked if he was going to "Hong Kong, Argentina or Singapore."  Are we hitting the point where people are worried about free speech and the subsequent consequences?

Larry

I think it is possible to have a dispassionate discussion of the facts of 9/11.

Mike Ruppert does a very good job of it in "Crossing the Rubicon" The problem is I think psyops are all over the net and are intent on derailing any discussion that would look at the commission report in a skeptical light. Of course all the architects, engineers and pilots who are looking into it have done a very credible job of poking holes in the myth.

Maybe as Ruppert says though nothing will really come of it other than we should never believe our government again.

Larry, I just came across this article via a Casey Research pointer to it.  Wow!

Getting at the truth and essence of things has always attracted me.  But I've kind of just thought of it as an abstract concept before.   I guess not; the consequences of obscuring the truth don't get much more real-world than this!

Would like to join you all for that round!

How can we do it?  Surely the internet provides us with the opportunity to get together for a couple of pints and loose talk.   Or maybe the flavor of the day should be as Dogs suggested; "a batch of single malt scotch" (haven't tried it but it sounds like a good idea).

Maybe one of the techies can take the lead?

How on earth did this state of affairs ever come to pass?
What happened to basic honesty and decency?
This is the workings and rules of the madhouse in action.
The complicity of the highest persons of state in this orchestrated mess, along with the financial institutions like The Fed and others of similar "stature," is nothing short of depraved pornography.
Figures elswhere show how one institution is printing money to buy back debt from abroad and so that further debt can be purchased in the form of bonds. God help America.......

Re: Truth Has Fallen and Taken Liberty With It

Welcome Tom

The short answer of how this came to pass. Involves conspiracy facts. Very wealthy families in Europe became involved in co-opting nations th rough the finance of the various governments especially through war. They were able to take over the issuance of not only bonds but currency through Central banks. Initially the Bank Of England and then the three central banks of the US. The latest being the Fed.

From their position of great wealth and power they were able to control world events. They exercised and increased their profits through war playing both sides against the middle. They then created an entire mythology to hide their actions and keep the "sheeple" comatized, and willing participants in their game. This was skillfully carried out by funding chairs at the top Universities and teaching through a disinformation campaign that continues to this day. The universities involved are mainly Ivy League schools and of course Oxford and Cambridge. The Rhodes scholarship is funded by the estate of Cecil Rhodes ( a protege of the Rothschild family). Probably the most famous Rhodes scholar is Bill Clinton.

Another method they use to promote their agenda is based on the work of Edward Bernays,  nephew of Freud. He used his uncles work to create the modern science of propaganda and public relations.

Currently world events are decided by groups such as the CFR, Trilateral Commission, Bilderbergs and the Club Of Rome. Nations states are mere props for these groups and the corporations through which the world economy is run.

What does this mean to you? Well you can be a sleepy pawn or an awake pawn.

Larry,

I'd buy you a fair few rounds of beer, as long as we can toast the life and work of ...

Paul Craig Roberts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Craig_Roberts

[snippet]

In an article for Counterpunch magazine titled "Pirates of the Mediterranean", Roberts wrote that for 60 years, Israel has replicated "the 17th, 18th, and 19th century theft of American Indian lands by US settlers." Roberts repeated charges that Gaza is "the world largest concentration camp" populated by people who were "driven out of Palestine so that "Israel could steal their land." He called the U.S. State Department a "puppet" of the Israelis and the U.S. itself a "puppet state" of the Israelis. He concludes the article by claiming that "there’s no money for California, or for Americans’ health care, or for the several million Americans who have lost their homes and are homeless, because Israel needs it."

Re: Truth Has Fallen and Taken Liberty With It

Paul, I'll buy half the rounds!

Paul Craig Roberts did an interview a couple days ago to explain why he is leaving and it is very troubling to hear.

"I came to the conclusion that its futile to write about what's happening; wars, police state, lack of civil rights, as long as the event that set those in motion - can't be analyzed.  Of course we're talking about 9/11."  - Paul Craig Roberts

Even supposed freedom sites like Antiwar.com & Counter Punch censored his articles when it came to 9/11.  This is happening often and through-out politics.  I will not support any politician that runs from this issue and think even "freedom" candidates like Ron Paul are complicit by their silence.

If 9/11 cannot be discussed it will never be properly investigated.  Or better yet, the government should simply declassify Sibel Edmonds testimony to the 9/11 Commission.

I've mentioned before, that anyone interested in freedom should simply listen to what Senator Bob Graham (9/11 Commission co-chair and vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence) told Gwen Ifill (PBS) during an interview:

SEN. BOB GRAHAM: Yes, going back to your question about what was the greatest surprise. I agree with what Senator Shelby said the degree to which agencies were not communicating was certainly a surprise but also I was surprised at the evidence that there were foreign governments involved in facilitating the activities of at least some of the terrorists in the United States.

I am stunned that we have not done a better job of pursuing that to determine if other terrorists received similar support and, even more important, if the infrastructure of a foreign government assisting terrorists still exists for the current generation of terrorists who are here planning the next plots.

To me that is an extremely significant issue and most of that information is classified, I think overly-classified. I believe the American people should know the extent of the challenge that we face in terms of foreign government involvement. That would motivate the government to take action.

GWEN IFILL: Are you suggesting that you are convinced that there was a state sponsor behind 9/11?

SEN. BOB GRAHAM: I think there is very compelling evidence that at least some of the terrorists were assisted not just in financing -- although that was part of it -- by a sovereign foreign government and that we have been derelict in our duty to track that down, make the further case, or find the evidence that would indicate that that is not true and we can look for other reasons why the terrorists were able to function so effectively in the United States.

GWEN IFILL: Do you think that will ever become public, which countries you're talking about?

SEN. BOB GRAHAM: It will become public at some point when it's turned over to the archives, but that's 20 or 30 years from now. And, we need to have this information now because it's relevant to the threat that the people of the United States are facing today.

It is a farce and a fraud at the highest levels that we don't know which countries were involved.  How are we to protect ourselves without this critical information?  That's what the cover-up is all about - protecting the guilty at the expense of our freedoms and security.

Anyways, here is part of Paul Craig Roberts interview:

Larry

I find it somewhat ironic that you are on a site that does not permit discussion of 9/11 and you are discussing 9/11.

I just wonder how much longer you will continue when someone like PCR says it is futile. Ruppert has said basically the same thing. I know lets do the time warp again.........it's just a jump to the right.............
