Transition Town Training: May 30th & 31st in Oakland, CA

Hi everyone,

My wife Elanne and I are organizing a Transition Town (TT) training in Oakland, CA.  The dates are May 30th & 31st.

Transition Town is an uplifting transformative response to Peak Oil and Climate Change that focuses on developing community resilience. The movement, which started in England, is spreading fast throughout the US.

Here's a great article to read about the TT movement if you're not already familiar with it.

Here's the Transition Town wiki where you can learn more about the movement.

And here's a link to a page that describes the TT training in more detail.

Space is limited to 60 participants.  The TT trainings have become very popular and will likely fill up
fast.  The December 2008 training in San Francisco had a wait list of 100 people.

If you're interested, please reply to this thread and "track" it in your "my account" section of via an RSS feed.  Once registration details have been finalized, I will update this thread.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!  Hope to see you in May!

Hi Chris,

I'm in for four seats at this time. I am going to try and bring one County Supervisor and one City Councilman from this area.

Will you post specific registration forms on this thread or will it be e-mailed to us directly? If you need set up help etc please let me know.

Great post Chris - thanks for the info and the links.

We have a group of about 15-20 friends and neighbors here in Virginia ranging from casual, informed interest to to activist and everything in between.  We are at Step 0.1 in our efforts.

Please keep me in the loop with any info you have as we start taking steps towards getting TT off the ground here.

Joe,

I'll definitely send more info when I have it.  For now, check out the links in my original post for general info about the training.  Our local CC group continues to meet monthly, and though we recently went through a tough period, I think we've worked out a viable model for our group moving forward.  I hope to write more about this when I have more time.

It became clear to my wife and I that we wanted to start a separate group that is more focused on taking action.  That's where the initiative to organize the TT training came from.

Coop,

Glad to know you'll be coming.  We will definitely need some help as the time get closer, and I appreciate your offer. Once we have all of the details, I'm going to set up an online registration service. I'll keep you posted.

DIAP,

We'll definitely keep you in the loop.

Chris

Great to see TT initiatives starting up everywhere.  Ours has just published its second town wide newsletter (by yours truly), and we are having a Peak Oil film showing in less than a month which we are promoting heavily and which we are still hopeful will be opened by our Mayor....

Hey Chris,

I am interested. I am up in Santa Rosa, and currently am trying to get a TT group in my area started.  I have made contact with postcarbon.org in Sebastopol (which is partnering with TT) and trying to get a Richard Heinberg or another speaker for a talk later this spring.   But I would like to get up to speed as a community organizer and this sounds perfect.

Greendoc,

Glad to know you're interested!  We're making progress on the details and I'll update the thread when they're finalized.  It'll probably be about ten days from now.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to get back to you with a few more details.  The online registration system is almost finished and will be likely be launched within the week.

We have a great location, the trainers have been selected (though not yet confirmed) and details are being finalized.  It looks like we will probably have to cap registration at 40 participants.  This is due to the intensive, interactive nature of the training.  So if you are interested, stay tuned here and sign up as soon as the registration site goes live.

The training will take place from 9:30 - 5:30 on May 30th & 31st.  We'll have recommendations for local hotels, and we will also try to hook up out-of-town participants with local hosts who have room for guests.

It is recommended that everyone read the Transition Handbook before attending the training.  You can purchase it directly from the publisher here.

Greendoc,

I am in Sebastopol, CA where we are starting Transition Town Sebastopol.  Richard Heinberg will speak here on March 3rd.  I don't think it has been announced yet.  I realize that Sebastopol and Santa Rosa are very different places, but you still might find it interesting.  Also, if you are interested in connecting, please e-mail me.

Cheers,

Suzie G.

Thanks Suzie,

Yes, i do know about that event, as well as the others planned by transitionsebastopol.   Sebastopol is ahead of the curve!  I want to get our own version here in bennett valley! http://www.transitionsebastopol.org/

I have heard RH many times, and he does a great job of souding the warning bell. I am ready to get to work, not hear more about the bad shape we are in.

Hey Chris,

I have been on the fence about the training....not about how valuable it is,  but rather the date.   That is the same weekend as CubScout Family Camp weekend..our last chance to go as my son will be Boy Scout next year and parents not invited anymore!  It was really hard deciding...I wish I could be both places at once, but sadly that is not so.

Hopefully TransitionTown Sebstopol will hold another training closer to home this summer.

Good Luck with your weekend!

Hi Lindsay,

Sheri and I attended that training session and have since been creating a network of Crash Course Graduates in the Sonora area to prepare for the changes coming our way. The momentum created last year by doing multiple Crash Course seminars and having Chris here for the Sonora Opera Hall Event has us really maxed out to keep community based preparations organized.

We have been very involved in expanding our local CSAs,  planning for a Community Kitchen and we just held our annual seed exchange event.  We  were fortunate to have a specialist in old world wheat varieties from San Luis Obispo attend and give a hands on demonstration in planting, growing and harvesting wheats.

We will also be planting a community seed garden this year and are into the second year of our local potato patch which generated over 8000lbs of product last year.

We are also gearing up our local 501c3 group called FoCuS  which can be found at   www.foothillsustainability.org/      It is an education oriented group which acts as an umbrella for seed groups which are related to actual production such as with food CSAs, health and wellness and so on.

We have ideas to establish our official Transition Initiative for our area but have been sidetracked with the activity of organization per the above.

I would like to connect up with your activities as well. You can send me a personal e-mail at [email protected] if you like and I will  do the same perhaps next week. We'll see how this weekend storm treats us as last week we had 10" of wet snow and 5 days of no power just to test our preparations!
