Norway: Deadly Bombings In Central Oslo, Deadly Shootings On An Island

Friday, July 22, 2011:

Twin Terror Attacks Shock Norway
"Norway has been hit by twin attacks - a massive bomb blast in the capital and a shooting attack on young people at a governing Labour Party youth camp. At least seven people were killed in the bombing, which inflicted huge damage on government buildings in Oslo. A few hours later a gunman opened fire at the camp on an island outside Oslo, killing at least 10."

"1530: A journalist from public radio NRK says: 'I see that some windows of the VG building and the government headquarters have been broken. Some people covered with blood are lying in the street.'

Suspect: Anders Behring Breivik

The Scottish Sun believes it has the identified the suspected killer as Anders Behring Breivik, a farmer, hunting enthusiast, and purported anti-Islamist.

Picture of the suspect in the link below:

Hunter Killer
"The gunman, dressed as a policeman, massacred more than 80 youths camping on an island - two hours after a huge car bomb wrecked government buildings in capital Oslo. Police arrested a Norwegian - named last night as farming firm boss Anders Behring Breivik. Explosives were also found on the island. Terrified survivors last night told how a blue-eyed gunman beckoned them towards him - then coldly opened fire."

Disenfranchised....

And in the latest news, the attacker was a Norseman.  It seems as though the feeling of disenfranchisement is just about everywhere.

So horrific, so terrible.  I'm gonna re-read the "Raising Children in Changing Times" article again.

A Monster In Norway

When you think about how more than 87 have been killed...

And this is outside of the context of war or a state-sponsored massacre.

It's just one perpetrator. One individual on an island of teenaged kids:

At Least 87 Dead In Norway Shooting, Bomb Attack
"Norwegians reacted with horror to television images of the bodies of young men and women strewn around the island.

"'I just saw people jumping into the water, about 50 people swimming towards the shore. People were crying, shaking, they were terrified,' said Anita Lien, 42, who lives by Tyrifjord lake, a few hundred metres (yards) from Utoeya island, northwest of Oslo. 'They were so young, between 14 and 19 years old.'

"A young girl, her hair still wet after escaping told TV2: 'He walked slowly but surely around it (the island) and shot everyone. Eventually he came to where I sat and then he slowly went over and shot ten people.' She escaped by jumping into the water.

"'He was so calm, that is what was so strange.'"

Nota Bene
Wikipedia article on Norwegian government policy on life imprisonment. (There is no capital punishment in Nortway. At least until today.)

More Updates

More from the BBC:

Norway Suspect 'Admits Attacks'
"Anders Behring Breivik, the 32-year-old suspect in Friday's attacks in Norway, held right-wing views, say police. Police chief Sveinung Sponheim said his internet postings 'suggest that he has some political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views'... Mr Breivik appears to have created entries on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, though the accounts were set up just days ago on 17 July... The suspect's lawyer said he admitted responsibility for the attacks. He said his client believed his actions were 'atrocious' but 'necessary', adding that he would explain himself in court on Monday."

Norway: Growing Belief In Home-Grown Plot
"Police are being careful to avoid speculation about the motives behind the Norwegian attacks. However they are indicating that the suspect for both the Oslo bomb and Utoeya shooting is in custody and is co-operating - and may want to explain his motives. The strong suggestion has been that the attacks are linked to domestic rather than international terrorism with a strong political agenda."

This gets to the heart of

This gets to the heart of the matter:

The terrorist who struck Norway yesterday delivered a 1500 page manifesto to a leader of the Finnish Sannfinlänska party - True Finland Party. The manifesto was e-mailed one hour before the bomb was detonated in Oslo.

He surrendered immediately when the police appeared on the island, and it's clear that his plan is to now get a platform from which to spread his philosophy during the trial. His planning was meticulous to the point of knowing precisely which defense lawyer he was going to request, when arrested.

In the manifesto, the shooter in detail describes his agenda - to initiate a multiyear struggle to end the Islamisation of Europe, by bringing wider attention to how European elites are promoting the creation of "Eurabia".

The manifesto also contains a lengthy interview with the terrorist, probably conducted with himself, and ends with a diary detailing his preparations over the past two months, concluded on the day before the attacks.

The terrorist has also posted videos on YouTube and elsewhere on the web, explaining his agenda.

I downloaded the manifesto from this link:

http://www.kevinislaughter.com/...

It is called 2083 - A European Declaration of Independence, and a google search will locate other links.

It's 1500 pages, and I haven't done more than skim the document - it is disturbing, and has caused significant reactions in Norway, as it shows to the lengthy preparations the terrorist conducted, before attacking.

A Willing Executioner: Why Norway isn't a surprise.

-------------------

... In  a nation as un-disposed to right nationalism as Norway can sustain the kind of subculture that nurtured Breivik's world view, how many more Breivik's exist in a nation like ours that so freely embraces right-wing hatred? I spent weeks in Northern Europe without seeing a single political bumper sticker. I was back in the US only for a moment before I could feel the ugly tension that invades our culture over issues of who or what an American should be. Day by day the drip drip of dehumanization continues. Sometimes it even goes on in the forums of this web page, as we react with fear to these attacks and demonize those who do the same. How do we leech this poison out of our culture before crimes like Breivik's become unremarkable?

Anders Breivik is a terrorist. He did his job. He has me terrorized, because I know that there are others like him. More are being made every day. Right now, there is someone, probably a number of people, sitting in front of their computers reading the coverage of events in Norway and thinking that what Anders Breivik did is morally acceptable. They don't live in a social sphere that condemns this kind of violence. They don't think that Breivik is a monster. They think that he is a soldier. And they want to be a soldier, too...

His manifesto on the fist 3 pages is almost an exact copy of the unabomber.  He just substituted muslims for communists.
