Looking for more Middle Atlantic (NC,VA,WV, MD) people to add to the Virginia Group

I figured I'd expand the Virginia group to include northeastern NC out through Raliegh, Greensboro to Winston-Salem, southern Maryland, West Virginia and Louisville, KY.

Charlottesville still seems like a reasonably central location.

Let me know if you are interested by posting here.

I guess that makes us the Middle Atlantic Regiment of the Martenson Brigade

Re: Looking for more Middle Atlantic (NC,VA,WV, MD) people ...

As posted in the VA thread, I want in too, especially if you can arrange something towards the
center or western side as I will be driving from Louisville, KY. The
only weekend time I would so far be unable to make it in the April-May
time fram is the weekend of April 25. I can probably get my wife to
come too!

Please add my to your VA list for contact eben though I don't live there (although KY was part of VA at one time!)

Exclesior,

Bruce

I live in western Maryland, west of Cumberland, MD.  I'm closer to Pittsburgh than to Washington DC.  I missed your earlier post - are you planning a conference for spring?

I live in Raleigh NC and can be a resource.  I just so happen to mention and share the web site link at a men's church breakfast meeting today where we had a economist from the local University speak to us.

stpaul, rraleigh -

We are looking at having a get together sometime in March/April,probably in the Charlottesville area.  There are some promising looking retreat and/or conference centers up there and it is fairly central to the surrounding areas.  Now that we have you in the thread - keep and eye out and as things start to piece together we'll let you know.

We in the Southwest US should group together for a ride sharing plan to get out of here!  There is no future in the Four Corners area.  No water.  Short growing seasons.  Isolation.  It will be a hard life out here when the oil is gone.

1440 -

This thread evolved from the Virginia thread - we are looking at getting together and having a conference similar to what was done in Rowe recently.

here's the link so you can read through what we have discussed so far

http://www.peakprosperity.com/forum/join-virginia-battalion-martenson-brigade/13093

BTW - I grew up in Wilmington from '68-'79.  Parents still have their beach house in Rehoboth.

Bruce,

I have been patiently waiting to see if we get anymore interest in the Mid Atlantic Group before deciding exactly when I will be going to TN, thinking we could have a possible meeting in March... Doesn't appear so with such lack of interest... I will decide this week and let you know.

Hi  - this is Elize from Richmond...

-please count me in... it seems that this group has a lot of possibilities and i'm all for getting together... THE SOONER THE BETTER... i think we can all use some extra support ... especially at the rate things are changing here in paradise...

I'm available for a get together anytime between now and the 10th of May... Then i'm leaving paradise for a seven week period.... Hope we can have a very active meeting before then...

Do you have any idea of how big you want this Middle Atlantic group  to be? i can probably get another 10 people to join...

Welcome Elize!  We want as many as we can get.

Elize is a friend of Dogs, Teresa and myself.  She and her husband immigrated here from South Africa almost 9 years ago, she in now a US citizen.  She has always referred to the US as, paradise.  This is because of her prior life in South Africa.  I hope she will soon share with us some of her experiences from South Africa.  She has already lived through what may soon be happening here.

Thrilled to have you here Elize!

Not as you might expect.  High rates of alcoholism, preventable disease, short life expectancy, dependence on government handouts, violence, illiteracy.  Not a lifestyle I'd aspire to.  They've had their culture shot out from under them.  Without an influx of cash from casinos, mineral leases, and the feds, there would be no living on their lands.  It's the least productive land on the continent.  Some of the tribes have coal, oil, and gas.  That will play out in a few decades.

Their relationship to the land has been changed by force.  Tupperware has replaced basketry.  Safeway has replaced hunting and gathering and horticulturalism.  Their draft animals are pickups.  Their methods of energy capture are now moderated by money, just as ours are.  Making silver jewelry and blankets is just a remnant of a culture.  How can they be expected to preserve a culture without access to their native lands and methods?  Reservations are not their original lands neither in proximity nor acreage.  Most NativeAmericans don't thrive on the reservation system.  Thriving was never the intent behind the system.

There are some exceptions.  Some NativeAmericans (not liking that term necessarily) have a foot in each culture.  Some are preserving the language and customes.  Many are forced to go off the rez to make a living in construction related jobs and such.  Many leave the rez and never return.  The cultural imperialism inflicted on them has been a resounding success.  They are relatively powerless in a land they once possessed.  Their culture and values make very few inroads into ours.  Buying a Navajo blanket for your den isn't what I'd call a cultural exchange.

The bottom line is that there are as many ways to cope as there are Navajos (Dine), so it's impossible to generalize.  They are after all individuals just like everyone else.  And don't forget, we're under the heel of the capital owning class just as they are.  That's probably the most important connection between the NativeAmericans and the Europeans who also sell their labor for a living.  It's also the most obscure.

Cat,

I'm sure I speak for many of us when I say that we would be very, very interested in Elize posting about life in South Africa. Please don't keep her just for the Middle Atlantic Group or the rest of us will be quite jealous! Wink

Hey Sam,

I will let Elize handle it, as you can imagine, it is a very emotional subject for her.  She truly thought she had found paradise here and when you hear her stories, you will understand.  I am hoping her husband will be on here soon too.  I don't want to go into their story, but there is a lot of sadness.

Cat

P.S.  I do wish you could hear her talk... The coolest accent, and don't let me leave out that she is a  real sweetheart!

Hi Cat,

I'm sorry I sounded so flip. Embarassed   I didn't realize how difficult it's been for your friend.

When she and/or her husband feel they are ready to share some of their stories, I know we will all be very interested. It's one thing to talk about what we might, or should, do. It's quite another to hear from someone who has "been there".

Mid Atlantic Area... WAKE UP!!!!
Mid Atlantic Area... WAKE UP!!!!
Mike P. and I are working behind the scenes trying to organize a Rowe
South.  There is a POSSIBILITY that the Martenson family will be joining
us.
The Sevenoaks facility has limited available dates and unfortunately none
of those worked.
I need some help in finding other facilities in the Central Virginia area.
Would really like to keep this out of Northern VA and in the mountains.
I need some suggestions here!  I need them ASAP...please!

Mike P. and I are still working behind the scenes.  Dogs and Teresa chime
in occasionally.  We would really like more input from all considering coming
to the Mid Atlantic meeting.
This is where we stand.
1.  We have decided the Charlottesville, VA is a fairly central location.
2.  We have a few venues in consideration but are still looking for more
possibilities.
3.  This meeting will be a Rowe South weekend or a long one day
meeting.
4.  Becca is keeping me apprised of the Martenson family involvement in our
future meeting. That involvement would be possibly attending a Rowe South
weekend or a Skype visit if the meeting is a long one day event.
5.  I have volunteered to take care of facility communications and
reservations.
6.  We would like to have a meeting ASAP, hopefully this Spring.
7.  We would really like more input from all of you.
Bottomline:  We need your help if you want this to happen.

Definitely want this to happen Cat and THANK YOU for all the time you have spent on it already.

Charlottesville area is good for us (husband and I).  Would like to find a venue like Rowe but have had difficulty as I know you have coming up with one.  So it would be helpful if anyone that has any suggestions on where to have it.

Think Rowe Tour should start in the south in Virginia with the Martenson's in attendance for the entire weekend.  Come on "ya'll" we can make this happen!!!  Teresa
