Ho do I take a would wood or ice core?

I am wondering on how to take a wood or ice core. Specifically, I know to use a core drill but how does the core get broken off keeping the solid core intact? Thanks!

tree coring

I'm not familiar with ice coring, but have done a little tree coring.  There isn't anything on the tree core drill itself that breaks off the wood at the end, it just naturally happens when you withdraw the drill.  I guess the pressure on the core that is in the drill at the breaking point is greater than the pressure of the tree that would tend to it in place.  I think ice core drills operate the same way, but I don't know from any personal experience.

I'm not sure if that answers your question, but its the best I've got.
