Gore Vidal: 'We'll have a dictatorship soon in the US'

Gore Vidal: 'We'll have a dictatorship soon in the US'

9-3-2009

The grand old man of letters Gore Vidal claims America is ‘rotting away’ — and don’t expect Barack Obama to save it

...America should leave Afghanistan, he says. “We’ve failed in every other aspect of our effort of conquering the Middle East or whatever you want to call it.” The “War on Terror” was “made up”, Vidal says. “The whole thing was PR, just like ‘weapons of mass destruction’. It has wrecked the airline business, which my father founded in the 1930s. He’d be cutting his wrists. Now when you fly you’re both scared to death and bored to death, a most disagreeable combination.”

His voice strengthens. “One thing I have hated all my life are LIARS [he says that with bristling anger] and I live in a nation of them. It was not always the case. I don’t demand honour, that can be lies too. I don’t say there was a golden age, but there was an age of general intelligence. We had a watchdog, the media.” The media is too supine? “Would that it was. They’re busy preparing us for an Iranian war.”...

...

Another notable Obama mis-step has been on healthcare reform. “He f***ed it up. I don’t know how because the country wanted it. We’ll never see it happen.” As for his wider vision: “Maybe he doesn’t have one, not to imply he is a fraud. He loves quoting Lincoln and there’s a great Lincoln quote from a letter he wrote to one of his generals in the South after the Civil War. ‘I am President of the United States. I have full overall power and never forget it, because I will exercise it’. That’s what Obama needs — a bit of Lincoln’s chill.” Has he met Obama? “No,” he says quietly, “I’ve had my time with presidents.” Vidal raises his fingers to signify a gun and mutters: “Bang bang.” He is referring to the possibility of Obama being assassinated. “Just a mysterious lone gunman lurking in the shadows of the capital,” he says in a wry, dreamy way....

IMHO.. the mechanism of decision making is less important than the LIMITS of government..

Give me a limited monarchy over an unlimited democracy any day...

For one thing you know who to blame... now the power behind the throne is  well away from view..

Magna carta established that even the monarch has limits.. and must obey law..

problem is.. the law itself doesn't know it's proper limits..

J managed it in two lines.. hows that for compression...

I shudder to think  how many pages current common + statue + commerce law fills..

Talk about spaghetti code..   full of bugs.. unmaintainable..

Rights (even inalienable ones) need to be enforced.. the only real rights you have are those which you personally or collectively will defend.

No doubt we are moving that way, but Vidal over-simplifies it if he is suggesting that Obama is to blame and that's the way to correct it.  Obama is a front man for the bigger powers, he's expendable and may be offered to the masses as the beginning and the end of tyranny.

Obama is the fog surrounding the real PTBs, yea, I'm talking about the private-for profit non-Federal no-Reserve banks and their controllers; the international banking cartel.

Plato . . . . Half the time, I have no idea what you're saying . . . . And, I've noticed that this usually occurs in the evening . . . . Now, it might be reasonable to assume that my comprehension skills deteriorate as the evening wears on, but I seem to be able to decipher everyone else's posts without difficulty, regardless of the hour . . . . So that I don't have to speculate, do you think that you could you throw some light on this phenomenon?

sorry  cloud,  I'm terse + cryptic + often worse for wear....

Spaghetti code = programmers stuff.... it will resonate. with them.. but confuse others.

Limits vs form of government.. should be understandable to most thinking people.. think which is most important ... ?

Structure ?? oligarchy bad, republic good ?  Think again.. deeper..  Is it HOW the decisions are made.. or what TYPE of decisions ?

2 lines.. "Love G", "love your neighbour as yourself" .. short + sweet    - -  "brevity = soul of wit".

When the state is most corrupt, then the laws are most multiplied.  - Tacitus.

Only rights = what you're prepared to defend..... = truism.

I agree with you, but wouldn't it be nice if we actually got someone in there with ethics who said, "F*ck it! I'm going to do what's in the best interests of the American people and not what my handlers want.

Hi, Plato;

Confusion < before.

philosophy + alcohol = nonsense.

mystery < wit < communication < truth.

code = isolated = socially inept.

 . . . How am I doing so far?

Gore Vidal has seen into this aspect of the system for decades. He wrote an article in the early 1980s referring to the American people as 'consumer-depositors' in thrall to the bankster cartel -- accurately enough, then and now.

What mystifies me about his recent article is that he's still playing the partisan political game, expressing preferences about candidates. So sad, isn't it -- the Demopublicans, Depublicrats, whatever you want to call them -- are the duopolistic political cartel which serves as the action-oriented arm of the bankster cartel.

Nothing in the Constitution said there were supposed to be two, and only two, official political parties. But they've actually got both houses of Congress, and all of the committees, divided up on partisan lines. The rare-bird third party member -- Socialist Bernie Sanders of Vermont, for instance -- has to join one of the two caucuses to even function within this wholly unsanctioned, extra-legal partisan structure.

Dear, dear Gore -- as you well know by now, you CANNOT punish Democrats by voting for Republicans, or vice versa. Either way, the cartel wins, and you lose because you wasted your time in their puerile political sandbox, advocating for Tweedledum over Tweedledee,  when you could have been doing something constructive.
