A flotilla of private vessels bringing 10,000 tons of food and humanitarian aid sail for Gaza

A flotilla of vessels is currently departing Cyprus for Gaza bringing 10,000 tons of food and humanitarian aid. The Israeli navy vows to stop them. Send some positive vibes their way for the 2 day voyage.

John99, thanks for lifting the news black-out on the heroic effort of the 700 brave souls steaming for Gaza.  Do you know if the European MPs or the holocaust survivor were able to get on board in Cyprus?  I had read that Cyprus was under intense pressure to deny them access as a VIP contingent could make internment or rough handling a PR nightmare.

There has been absolutely no coverage from U.S. media.  I know a contingent from Ireland's ruling party was scheduled to participate - maybe I'll check their news sources.

I hadn't heard anything about this!  I'm going to call a couple friends in AIPAC and see what's happening.  I'll try to update as I find out.  Being a holiday, it may be a day or two.

One of the boats in the flotilla is named the Rachel Corrie.

She was a peace activist killed in Gaza. You  can read about her here.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rachel Corrie
Born Rachel Corrie
April 10, 1979
Died March 16, 2003 (aged 23)

Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) was an American member of theInternational Solidarity Movement (ISM) who was killed by a bulldozer operated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) while attempting to prevent IDF forces from demolishing the home of local Palestinian pharmacist Samir Nasrallah. According to the New York Times, Corrie and others were acting as "human shields." A student at the Evergreen State College, she had taken a year off and traveled to the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada.[1] The details of the events surrounding Corrie's death are still disputed.

Thanks V was not so fully aware of the Rachel Corrie story and how she was killed.

Larry, the Cypriots reneged on their promise to allow dignitaries to have small boat access to ferry them aboard the larger ships waiting beyond the 12 mile international boundry.

They had to transport most of them to North Cyprus for the boarding and of course the Greek and Cypriot MP's could not cross that border nor get aboard. (Article below)

There is an onboard website broadcast from the ships. To get live updates:

We're on our way! - Witness Gaza.com

Saturday, May 29, 2010

After tremendous pressure from the Greek Cypriots, reneging on their agreement with us http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/cyprus-stops-mps-joining-gaza-flotilla..., we were forced to take our MPs and activists to Famagusta yesterday, on the Turkish/Cypriot side of Cyprus. We spent all day going from one port to the next, surrounded by helicopters and police. Clearly our deal with Cyprus officials had fallen through, and we ended up being pawns in a political soap opera. The Cypriot members of Parliament, the ones who had worked so hard to get us permission to leave, were outraged. The Greek Parliament members finally told us to go to the North. If they could, they would. The Cypriot government said they made their decision because, "The Republic of Cyprus is fighting for its survival" but it didn't bow to pressure from Israel. As they said this, they bowed their heads.

We made a deal with the Cypriot government that we would board our high-profile passengers and members of Parliament from Cyprus. We would board with no media coverage. We would not bring our boats into Cyprus. We would take small boats out to our own ships and board past the 12-mile territorial limit.

Authorities mandated that we couldn't even do that, essentially telling us that, even if we board small boats anywhere in Greek Cyprus from any port, we could not travel outside their territorial limits to go to Gaza. Twenty-seven people were supposed to board, including 9 Cypriots and two Greeks. None of them could come with us as we went North.

Then our two passenger boats mysteriously had mechanical problems at the same time, 3:30 pm. Challenger 2 was able to get 14 delivered to the IHH ship, then limped into the harbor in Limassol after being harassed by Cypriot helicopters

, essentially forbidding us to bring our wounded boat into port.

Our other boat, Challenger 1 headed toward Famagusta with 16 passengers. It, too, was wounded, something wrong with the steering.

By the time we were jerked around yesterday. We had started at 7:00 am. By 10:00 pm, we had nowhere to board, and our boats were out of commission.

But we all have Gaza fever, and no one was giving up.

It has taken us all day to find someone on the Turkish side to ferry some of our passengers out to the flotilla who have been patiently waiting five hours away from Cyprus. At 6:00 pm, 20 of our passengers left for the flotilla, and the Swedish MP and the three German MPs are on board. Hedy is not, and we are heartsick that, once again, she will not be able to go to Gaza.

The flotilla leaves for Gaza early in the morning and should arrive tomorrow afternoon. We have persevered... Al Samoud.

There is so much negative stuff in the news every day, it is very refreshing and spiritually uplifting to have this story unfold of unselfish heroes trying to change the world for the better.  I'm damned proud of Ireland, Italy and Sweden for being heavily represented in this humanitarian effort.  It was all together fitting to see former U.S. Colonel Anne Wright in the video link John99 provided above - she was outspoken against invading Iraq and resigned in protest in 2003.

Parliamentarians from Ireland

This is a holiday weekend in the U.S. and rest a assured, before it is over, I will raise a pint in tribute to these fine and heroic people!

The boats are carrying items that Israel bars from reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials. The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers.

Shame on them all. Isnt a crime against a humanitarian effort a crime against humanity?

Reports from 2 to 20 death and dozens wounded!!! Unbelievable!!!

Here is the latest article from Al Jazeera, but on the site, there is a video link worth the watch @

Israel attacks Gaza aid fleet

Al Jazeera's report on board the Mavi Marmara before communications were cut

Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships aiming to break the country's siege on Gaza.

At least 19 people were killed and dozens injured when troops intercepted the convoy of ships dubbed the Freedom Flotilla early on Monday, Israeli radio reported.

The flotilla was attacked in international waters, 65km off the Gaza coast.

Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokeswoman, confirmed that the attack took place in international waters, saying: "This happened in waters outside of Israeli territory, but we have the right to defend ourselves."

Footage from the flotilla's lead vessel, the Mavi Marmara, showed armed Israeli soldiers boarding the ship and helicopters flying overhead.

Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal, on board the Mavi Marmara, said Israeli troops had used live ammunition during the operation.

Aftermath of Israel's attack on Gaza flotilla

The Israeli military said four soldiers had been wounded and claimed troops opened fire after "demonstrators onboard attacked the IDF Naval personnel with live fire and light weaponry including knives and clubs".

Free Gaza Movement, the organisers of the flotilla, however, said the troops opened fire as soon as they stormed the convoy.

Our correspondent said that a white surrender flag was raised from the ship and there was no live fire coming from the passengers.

Before losing communication with our correspondent, a voice in Hebrew was clearly heard saying: "Everyone shut up".

Israeli intervention

Earlier, the Israeli navy had contacted the captain of the Mavi Marmara, asking him to identify himself and say where the ship was headed.

Shortly after, two Israeli naval vessels had flanked the flotilla on either side, but at a distance.

Organisers of the flotilla carrying 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid then diverted their ships and slowed down to avoid a confrontation during the night.

They also issued all passengers life jackets and asked them to remain below deck.

Al Jazeera’s Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Jerusalem, said the Israeli action was surprising.

"All the images being shown from the activists on board those ships show clearly that they were civilians and peaceful in nature, with medical supplies on board. So it will surprise many in the international community to learn what could have possibly led to this type of confrontation," he said.

Meanwhile, Israeli police have been put on a heightened state of alert across the country to prevent any civil disturbances.

Sheikh Raed Salah,a leading member of the Islamic Movement who was on board the ship, was reported to have been seriously injured. He was being treated in Israel's Tal Hasharon hospital.

In Um Al Faham, the stronghold of the Islamic movement in Israel and the birth place of Salah, preparations for mass demonstrations were under way.

Protests

Condemnation has been quick to pour in after the Israeli action.

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, officially declared a three-day state of mourning over Monday's deaths.

Turkey, Spain, Greece, Denmark and Sweden have all summoned the Israeli ambassador's in their respective countries to protest against the deadly assault.

Worldwide outrage has followed the deadly Israeli attack of Gaza aid convoy [AFP]

Thousands of Turkish protesters tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul soon after the news of the operation broke. The protesters shouted "Damn Israel" as police blocked them.

"(The interception on the convoy) is unacceptable ... Israel will have to endure the consequences of this behaviour," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

Ismail Haniya, the Hamas leader in Gaza, has also dubbed the Israeli action as "barbaric".

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists, including a Nobel laureate and several European legislators, were with the flotilla, aiming to reach Gaza in defiance of an Israeli embargo.

The convoy came from the UK, Ireland, Algeria, Kuwait, Greece and Turkey, and was comprised of about 700 people from 50 nationalities.

But Israel had said it would not allow the flotilla to reach the Gaza Strip and vowed to stop the six ships from reaching the coastal Palestinian territory.

The flotilla had set sail from a port in Cyprus on Sunday and aimed to reach Gaza by Monday morning.

Israel said the boats were embarking on "an act of provocation" against the Israeli military, rather than providing aid, and that it had issued warrants to prohibit their entrance to Gaza.

It asserted that the flotilla would be breaking international law by landing in Gaza, a claim the organisers rejected.

Other international reaction to the incident:

PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD ABBAS:

"What Israel has committed on board the Freedom Flotilla was a massacre."

He declared three days of official mourning for the dead.

TURKISH PRESIDENT ABDULLAH GUL:

- Mr Gul said in a statement that Ankara is demanding an inquiry into the violent interdiction of the Turkey-backed convoy and the punishment of the culprits.

- Turkey said on Monday it had called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

ARAB LEAGUE CHIEF AMR MOUSSA:

- Amr Moussa called on Monday for an emergency meeting to discuss what the body that groups 22 Arab states described as Israel's "terrorist act".

"The Arab League strongly condemns this terrorist act."

IRANIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD:

- "The inhuman acts of the Zionist regime against Palestinians and preventing humanitarian aid to the Gaza people does not show the strength of the Zionist regime but shows its weakness," Ahmadinejad told state broadcaster IRIB. "All these acts indicate the end of the heinous and fake regime and will bring it closer to the end of its existence."

FRENCH PRESIDENT NICOLAS SARKOZY:

- "The President of the Republic expresses his profound emotion in the face of the tragic consequences of the Israeli military operation," Sarkozy's office said. "He condemns the disproportionate use of force and addresses his condolences to the families of the victims," it said.

ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER FRANCO FRATTINI:

- "I deplore in the strongest terms the killing of civilians. This is certainly a grave act".

GERMAN GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN ULRICH WILHELM:

- "The German government is shocked by events in the international waters by Gaza..."

- "Every German government supports unconditionally Israel's right to self defence," said Wilhelm, but added that Israeli actions should to correspond to what he described as the "basic principle" of proportionality.

EUROPEAN UNION:

- "High Representative Catherine Ashton expresses her deep regret at the news of loss of life and violence and extends her sympathies to families of the dead and wounded," said a spokesperson for Baroness Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief.

- "On behalf of the European Union she demands a full enquiry about the circumstances in which this happened... The continued policy of closure is unacceptable and politically counter-productive. She calls for an immediate, sustained and unconditional opening of the crossing for the flow of humanitarian aid, commercial goods and persons to and from Gaza," the spokesperson said.

THE VATICAN:

- "This is a very painful fact, in particularly because of the loss of human lives," said chief Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi. He said the Vatican was against violence "from whatever side it comes".

There's another side to this story.

http://legalinsurrection.blogspot.com/2010/05/gaza-human-shields-and-tur...

"Let's be clear, this flotilla had nothing to do with humanitarian supplies, which could have been shipped by land. The flotilla, if successful, would have opened the door to military supplies to Hamas concealed in later shipments.

Iranian desire to turn Gaza into the equivalent of the Hezbollah missile arsenal was the real purpose of the flotilla, with European useful idiots tagging along. That Turkey played a leading role as proxy for Iran in breaking the blockade is yet another sign that Turkey's growing alignment with Iran is a harbinger of bad things to come.

The flotilla was a collective human shield operation in which civilians, including reportedly including an 18 month old child, were put on the ships either to dissuade the Israelis from stopping the ships, or alternatively, to create an international incident. Prior to the flotilla launching, the leader of Hamas announced that it would be a triumph regardless of whether the flotilla landed or was stopped by Israel."

"The flotilla was attacked in international waters, 65km off the Gaza coast"

Wonder if this has been verified?  If the ship was in international waters, would Israel have the right to board without permission (via a helicopter dropped swat team)?

Did Israel try to contact the ship to ask permission to board in order to discuss the situation?

No question, Israel has the sovereign responsibility and authority to protect her borders and coastlines (I wish my country watched hers).  But this incident seems like it could have been diffused.  The point is we won't know because it doesn't appear that a peaceful approach was attempted and possibly, international law was violated.

The last thing we need right now is anger and hostility boiling over in the middle east.  We have over (I think) 250,000 U.S. military personnel and private contractors occupying Muslim land and their safety may be compromised.  Does this extend our occupation?  Are we helping to recruit opposition forces?  When will one of these incidents be the flash event for something really bad?

I dunno, I guess it's too early to sort it out.  I have a lot more questions than answers on this one, I'll be watchin for ya'als updates and comments.

If there was an ulterior motive it was to fix world attention on the continuing persecution of the Palestinians. Israel acted, once again, with impunity, callousness, total disregard of international law. It was an act of war, of the worst kind, killing innocent people. There is no excuse. Israel's blatant behaviour obviates any pretext they might dredge up and should be automatically dismissed. Their leaders are international criminals, terrorists. Don't even get me started on the Mossad.

Well,

I just got a call from a old colleague who is with AIPAC.  It seems many of them didn't have much of a Memorial Day Weekend due to having to work.  Asked him about the situation and he flat out said "it's F'd up!" and their phones are ringing off the hooks because of Congressional Members calling.  He's been in the office ALL weekend.

He wouldn't go into much more detail until he speaks with a couple of Israeli contacts.  I'll add what I can, when I can.

See the so called "Weapons" on board ... I feel so sad. A professor of mine when I'm a Student and former Member of the German Parliament was on board of the entered turkish vessel: Prof. Dr. Norman Paech - I used to like him very much - he was a very good law professor and a nice man who helped many not so lucky people (homeless and so on) here in Hamburg. Until now, we have not heart from him if he is alive or injured.

Comment on this story appears to be a function of Right vs Left.

http://rightwingnews.com/2010/05/comparison-liberal-and-conservative-rea...

Here is an excerpt:

"Honestly, I don't find the Palestinian people to be the least bit sympathetic. They're backwards, genocidal, hyper-violent, sad sack, Nazi wannabes led by terrorists who would happily murder every Jew on the planet if they could get away with it.

"Then there are the Israelis. They're a tiny Western Democracy surrounded by backwards savages who want to murder them down to the last child because they're Jews. Moreover, despite all the claims to the contrary, they're the most restrained people on earth. If you don't believe that, consider the fact that they could simply drive the Palestinians off their land and take it at any point, but instead, they've chosen to permanently live beside of millions of people who make the Manson family look sane. If the Israelis were somehow replaced by Americans, we'd drive the Palestinians off their land at gunpoint in six months tops -- and we'd be perfectly justified in doing so."

What follows are comments first from the Right then from the Left.

The fall-out from this story is gathering like an incoming storm that could greatly damage the public perception of Israel.  And not just in the Muslim world:

Ireland has loudly criticized today's actions Martin: Irish citizens 'kidnapped' in international waters

The [Irelands] Minister for Foreign Affairs has accused Israel of kidnapping Irish citizens in international waters.

Micheál Martin is furious after Israel announced it would deport all foreign nationals seized from a convoy of ships carrying aid to Gaza.  Israel launched an attack on the flotilla overnight, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens more.

Seven Irish passport holders have been taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod from where it is planned to deport them. One has already signed papers agreeing to the move.  But Minister Martin said he has told the Israeli Ambassador Dr Zion Evrony that the Government wants these Irish citizens released immediately.

"The Israeli government requires people to sign papers so that they can be deported," Minister Martin said. "But of course these people did not enter Israel illegally.

"They were essentially kidnapped from international waters, taken into Israel.. And now they are being asked to sign a document almost confirming that they entered illegally.

The Israeli Ambassador defended his country's actions.  Dr Evrony said he is neither ashamed nor embarrassed by what happened, but he stated that he would convey the views of the Irish Government to his country's government.  He made the remarks after meeting Minister Martin at Iveagh house this evening.  Dr Evrony said he did not belive relations between Ireland and Israel had been damaged.

"Kidnapping Irish citizens in international waters" sounds like a serious accusation.  It will be interesting to see if more western leaders condemn Israel's actions as being an unacceptable violation of international law and what that might mean in terms of future relations and public opinion.

As an American, I wonder what is going on with Joe Meadors.  I haven't seen any news as to his whereabouts - was he taken into custody by Israeli authorities?  Did the ceremony actually take place?

Freedom Flotilla to Hold Memorial Service for US Sailors Slain by Israel in 1967

U.S.S. Liberty Survivor Joe Meadors to Honor Slain Shipmates

On Sunday, May 30, 2010, participants in the international flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip will hold a memorial service at sea to commemorate the 34 Americans killed and 173 injured in Israel's 1967 attack on the U.S.S. Liberty.

Joe Meadors, a signalman on the Navy surveillance ship 43 years ago and a member of the Free Palestine Movement delegation to the flotilla, will lead the ceremony in honor of his crewmates. The service will be held aboard the Sfendoni, a ship contributed to the Freedom Flotilla by the European Campaign to End the Siege on Gaza. It is scheduled to be held in international waters about 30 miles off the coast of Gaza, near the site of the deadly incident.

Mr. Meadors believes that while the facts of that day in 1967 may never be fully acknowledged, the men who died should not be forgotten. "I am sailing again in the Eastern Mediterranean," he said, "to remember the brave heroes from the Liberty and the forgotten 1.5 million people trapped in Gaza."

If the story of the U.S.S. Liberty (and here) hit the American people during this Memorial Day weekend, as scheduled, and it may still, I think many would become less sympathetic to Israel's "right to protect their borders" outside of international law.

The respect of international law needs to be front and center as it has been reported by Israel's Haaretz that "Israel to deploy nuclear-armed submarines off Iran coast."  How far can a nation go in violating international law under the auspices of "protecting itself" before they become a rogue nation and a threat to the world?

My perspective of the situation remains clear; clarified somewhat by a regular repeat prescription of George Galloway. Enough within itself to add infinite weight to the realities of the last few days, I'll leave him to speak for himself ...

Will someone here please explain where the humanity is.

I stand with Ahmedinijad, this is not only a regime which will disappear from the pages of history, it damn well should.

The state of Israel is a bad mistake foisted on the world by the Rothschild controlled Roundtable group in England. What the Rothschilds did not contribute directly they conned the American people out of through the efforts of AIPAC. Israel receives more aid from the US than any other country. Much of that aid is in the form of military supplies and training. There will be increased blowback for us.

I suggest that everyone here poll their elected officials on where they stand on aid to Israel and if they are in favor of continuing to send US  dollars to this terrorist regime then I suggest you vote them out of office if they wish to continue this funding.

Thank you, Paul. A fantastic interview and a group of us have just watched it and enjoyed it immensely. Galloway, you may remember was refused entry into Canada last year, falsely under terrorism legislation.

John,

What can I say! To those who have stumbled into this thread on the assumption that aid was making its way, and a brightspot was on the horizon for people who are suffering atrociously, history, yet again repeats ...

Location - Location - Location ...

This is the single most powerful reason that The State Of Israel mounts such strife and conflict on the communities that border its country, and for the suffering upon the Palestinian people's. No better positioning for a base on the south eastern fringe of the Mediteranean sea, all for the benefit of the Wests aggregious thirst for the remaining 60% of global oil. Nothing less than a series of pawns for the sake of energy. Totally aligned with 1 of our 3 E's at cm.com.

... and what of George Galloway? Congress bit off a lump that was way too big for them to swallow, not such a long time ago ...

... all of us asking ourselves if any and all of this is related is a bloody good start ...

Best,

Paul
