Consolidated list of abreviations

... I am often wondering what people mean ... so was hoping to write a few here, have others add to it, and also be able to ask if you don't know so that we can all find out !  I am sure there are more of you out there who don't know the abbreviations sometimes.

AGW     Anthropogenic global warming

TSHTF The Sh*t hits the fan

TPTB the powers that be

BTW by the way

IMHO in my honest (humble?) opinion

I was recently exposed to the following, in an online discussion among fellow surgeons:

YDKWYDK: You Don't Know What You Don't Know

I honestly still don't know what the hell that means!

I just started reading "The Black Swan" . So far a very interesting read and it answers this question....

My take so far, is that humans tend to use past historical data to project future events and that in the complex world we live in, these methods tend to hide from us the fact that "Black Swan" events can occur that will totally surprise us.  That is we don't know what we don't know about complex systems, perhaps because we have never seen the event before.  That is past history is not a good forecast for the future in complex systems.  But I'm only about 1/10th the way into the book.... so I could have the premise all wrong....

"There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we do not know we don’t know." Donald Rumsfeld

Although the press made light of this remark it seems pretty straightforward and has an almost mathematical elegance.

Amanda -

TMI = Too Much Information

Like when your great aunt describes her diarrhea and bowel problems over the past week, or your coworker describes the naughty bedroom things he/she did last weekend.  Way more information than you wanted or needed to know Wink

Re: Consolidated list of abreviations

I have never heard of a CDO being a Credit Default Option.  Might be mixing these together.

CDO = Collateralized Debt Obligation

CDS = Credit Default Swap

Re: Consolidated list of abreviations

Wow. I feel so honored that Rick Hartman, DTM and I are (so far) the only individuals to get our own acronyms!

Morph, I'm humbled by your MOT background, but FWIW, I've never heard of the "H" in HAM meaning "hand-held". When I was growing up there were several HAMs in the neighborhood, some with big antennae, and that was decades before handhelds. I'm pretty sure HAM just means Amateur Radio, but then again I don't design electronics and you do...

ET (now a recognized acronym on CM.com)

Re: Consolidated list of abreviations

The exact origin of the term HAM for amateur radio hobbyists isn't really known (or at least not confirmed), but today just refers to amateur or hobbyist radio users.  It actually may not have been an abbreviation or acronym at all....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology_of_ham_radio

(Just on a side note, does it strike anyone else as amazing that someone actually created a wiki page on the etymology of ham radio?  Someone out there must have had a lot of free time  Wink)
