To add context, here is the ONS Work and Worklessness Among Households 2009 labour force survey, released yesterday, 26th August.

At worst, in the North East of the UK 23.2% of households of working age had no-one in work.

At best, the East of England of the UK has 12.2% of worker households in a similar state.

The imbalance in the UK economy is not just across industrial sectors, or between imports and exports, its also geographic with the South East and London generating over 60% of economic growth over the last 20 years or so.
