Re: 9 Trillion and counting

You forgot to add in Social Security, MediCare, MediCaid, Fannie, Freddie, the two wars and the cost of "free' Health Care.

Your numbers look to be about 100 Trillion dollars short.

Add in externalized costs as well, both environmental and social. These are pretty fuzzy numbers, but real nonetheless. What would you estimate the externalized cost of the BP oil spill to be? Or the social cost of an unregulated financial industry on the world economy. Or the cost of another 9-11(blowback from American imperial hubris). Those unmanned drone attacks are pissing off millions of people who otherwise would not lean toward radical behavior. These types of externalized costs are what will really bite us in the ass.

I'd say that they forgot to add them since the post was just a quote.

I like nice round numbers even if 8.9 would not be that much better.

What's also worth noting is that Intragovernmental Holdings seem to be going down, which most likely means that SS tax is not enough to cover current obligations. Trouble wherever one looks.
