A Janis Joplin Song For The Current Era

I've been introducing my younger daughter to Janis Joplin's songs and their powerful social commentary.

I got to wondering what Joplin's observations would be about the direction the world has taken since her death in the early 1970s.

So I got inspired to take a crack at what her lyrics to Mercedes Benz would be like if she wrote the song today.

Here's what I came up with. Try to imagine this sung in her gritty, scratchy, soulful style:

Joplin Redux

Oh Lord, can you put me on a rocket to Mars?

As far as planets go, aliens are free to have ours.

We wrecked our air and water, drivin' all our cars.

So Lord, can you put me on a rocket to Mars?

-----

Oh Lord, can you buy me some health insurance?

After paying my deductible, I'm down to my last cents.

How else am I gonna get me my oxycontins?

So Lord, can you buy me some health insurance?

-----

Oh Lord, won't you buy me the new Apple iPhone?

Ev'ryone around me is staring at their own.

I just want to stop feelin' so gosh darn alone.

So Lord, won't you buy me the new Apple iPhone?

-----

*Everybody now!*

----

Oh Lord, can you call me an Uber ride car?

I need to get myself asap down to the bar.

Got to drown all my sorrows, the world's gone FUBAR.

Oh Lord, hurry up with that Uber ride car.

Got a verse to add? Share it in the Comments below.

And if you need a reminder of how the tune goes, give this a listen:

A Steppenwolf Song More Relevant today than in 1969
John Kay wrote:

The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

..............

America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now?
We can't fight alone against the monster

I thought about underlining lyrics that are most relevant today, but heck, I'd wind up underlining the whole thing.

I love Janis, I truely do.  However, when I'm comparing the giants, I subtract significant points from artists who flamed out before reacing 30.

Steppenwolf

How timely is that song by John Kay and Steppenwolf.  Saw them in concert in Green Bay, WI in 1975 when this short guy with shades was checking out the opening band.  I thought to myself, "Who is this weird little dude?"  Half an hour later that little guy was belting out The Pusher.  Awesome band.

Quick ditty

Oh lord won't you buy me a new Tesla car,

My Prius is dying, don't want no Jaguar,

Not sure where I'm heading, but I got my guitar,

Oh lord won't you buy me a new Tesla car

Good one, SS!

As an aside, I find it ironic that Janis snarked at owning Porsches when mocking consumerism in her song, while she was an owner herself(!):

Me & Bobbie McGee

was released posthumously.

She went through with the trade.

"Cheap Thrills" is still a gift to Rock fans, still in my top 100.

Inflation even happens in songs

I didn’t realise inflation even happens in songs....Joni Mitchell's Yellow Taxi original version runs: “they took all the trees and put them in a tree museum....and charged the people a dollar and a half just to see em.”

whereas in Amy Grant's 1990s version, the people are charged "twenty-five bucks," and in Mitchell's own 2007 re-recording, the people are charged "an arm and a leg."
