Has anyone seen Xi around? He must not be feeling well.
What’s up with those 70-80 unmarked buses carrying military personnel to Beijing?
Here in Taiwan we just had a four day weekend. Many people left the heavily populated north for the more rural south in order to pay respects to their ancestors. Of course it was also a good time for a vacation, with people crowding in amusement parks and beachside resorts.
I got an emergency message on my phone on Saturday imploring me and millions of others to not go to certain touristy hotspots. Some places were so packed there were police going around attempting to break up the crowds.
I went out briefly on Saturday to the dump to throw away trash. (We choose to do this rather than dump it on the daily trash trucks in order to avoid interactions.) Sadly I saw (from my car!) that a quarter of people were not wearing masks.
There are discussions about “if” a lockdown were to happen, how would it be implemented. Well, I think that’s just a way of easing the public into it. I do have high confidence it won’t spiral out of control here, it’ll be more like a controlled burn as in South Korea. Nonetheless I cannot help but ruefully watch as people take the safety and calm here for granted. Taiwan is one of only a handful of countries on planet earth where schools are still open, with very few restrictions.
Anyway we’ll see where the chips fall in the next few weeks.
And, although I enjoyed evicerating our faithful comrades in my previous thread, I promise to politely ignore them this time. Let’s see how long they can resist the urge to comment. 🙂
edit- I think I got the emergency message Saturday actually. Those aren’t like regular text messages, they disappear after delivery so I couldn’t check. And I’m extremely tired from dealing with a 2 month and 2 year old… so there’s that, lol…
long time subscriber here; it appears the numbers, are are not correct:
I think Winnie, along with most of the rest of the upper end of the CCP, is in hiding because this virus has them in its crosshairs. Think for a moment who it ends up really targeting?
- diabetic (or prediabetic)
- heart disease
I’m guessing Mr Xi falls right into those particular crosshairs.
In fact, I’m guessing that’s true of most of the CCP’s upper echelon.
I think one positive thing that will come out of this is a significant increase in the safety protocols at their virology laboratories.
Thanks for the report from Taiwan. It does sound like it is a rare oasis of relative calm. All those crowds do sound a little concerning though! It is so interesting how much perspective has changed in just a month.
Davefairtex, your comment cracked me up. That bullet list, lol. That’s really bad taste of me to chuckle at others’ (potential) misfortunes but honestly it’s so real.
Saw something on the news at lunchtime about how those Wuhan biolabs were aggressively recruiting coronavirus experts all the way back last summer. Not clear what that implies.
Edit- forgot to mention something else from the news, some really high number like 200k people from Wuhan visited the US last year. Somehow that was related to the previous info but I wasn’t following it that closely. My language skills are not that good and I rely a lot on my husband to translate.
