Here is the data collection policy from a bank I use.  I suppose its pretty much the same across all banks.

Once in a while I take the time to read the fine print on my account.

We collect the following categories of Personal Data.

Personal Identifiers — Personal unique identifiers, such as full name and federal or state issued identification numbers including Social Security number, driver’s license number, and passport number

Personal Information — Personal information, including contact details such as telephone number and address, financial information such as account number and balance, payment card details including credit and debit card numbers, as well as medical and health insurance information

Characteristics of Protected Classes — Characteristics of protected classes or groups under state or federal law, such as sex or marital status

Purchase Information — Purchase information, such as products and services obtained and transaction histories

Biometric Information — Biometric information, such as fingerprints and voiceprints

Internet or Online Information — Internet or online information such as browsing history, and information regarding interaction with our websites, applications, or advertisements

Geolocation Data — Geolocation data, such as device location

Audio and Visual Information — Audio, electronic, visual, thermal, olfactory, or similar information, such as call and video recordings

My province (ontario) mandates the banks to ask why you are withdrawing over 5000. So I asked what concern it was of theirs. They said they had to report my answer to the government. And I had to notify the bank 3 days in advance so they would have the cash available.

I’m seriously considering going bank account and cell phone free. AT&T is about to shut down their 3g network, forcing the last bastions of GPS-free flip/burner phone users out. They don’t want there to be anyone who is outside of their 24 hour 100% surveillance network. How did the world get to this, and is there any conceivable way to get rid of it?

My land line works great, my old rotary telephone even works during a power failure.

The best part is no one can get hold of me when I’m out!

I’ve started using cash for everything I can. Still have to pay for online shopping through the bank sadly. I did look into using a crypto service for payments however it turns out that would be a right pain in the … due to tax events on each purchase.

I’m looking into credit unions and other similar banks now. Hoping to switch from one of the big banks here to a sort of people owned bank.

Hi Snow

Reasonable question.  It is the stage coach bank.  If I name it the  filter on this forum kicks it out.  It does not digest brand names.

But this is the typical fine print at most banks.  Check yours and let us know what you find.

And check the fine print on your phone service.  If it is a major service you will note that your text and content becomes their property, not yours.  You are merely allowed to “use” it or have it delivered on your behalf.  And they can separate you from it at any time no reason given.  It’s their stuff now.  And they keep it a long time.  That’s why they offer this “retrieval” service for you regarding your deleted text messages.  They are still there.  Just not on your phone.

Think about all the pictures you have sent….

How does one figure out what’s a good/trustworthy bank to use? There are local credit unions around me, but how do I know they aren’t owned/controlled by the big guys?
