Seeking Recommendations for Water Pump that can work in Reverse as a Generator
I finally got a longer assembly of water pipes to cover a hill with a 100 yard vertical over about a quarter mile, in my back yard.
I want to ‘play around’ with pumped water energy storage and hydro electric tech. in general.
Has anybody ever subjected a water pump to a significant water pressure and gotten good results getting some electricity out of it ?
In other parts of electro magnetics I have gotten lucky with decent regularity, “just trying something”.
For example, if I hook the $100 Home Depot is pump up to a water hose that has 300 feet of head on it, will the motor turn and generate electricity ?
Obviously if we get analytical we can divide the water pumps up into categories –
* uses a geometry similar to a worm gear so it just won’t work “in reverse”
* can generate electricity BUT will self destruct
* can generate electricity with decent efficiency, WITHOUT committing electric motor Hari-Kari.
Anyway, I’m looking for a water pump in the 3rd category.
The pump shown is AC but I would be happy with any device that can be MacGyvered to generate AC or DC.
Induction motors can generate electricity by turning the rotor faster than the synchronous speed. The problem that you will have (besides some wiring issues) is that your pump is not designed to be efficient when run in reverse and probably is very efficient even now. I would recommend buying a micro pelton turbine and putting a bypass around the pump.
I don’t know anything about this particular one because I have only worked on a utility scale (like PG&E Helm Pumped Storage) systems but a pumped storage setup is cheaper than a huge lithium battery. Do a web search for other pelton wheels. They are usually sized according to the head and flow available (which determines the total output). https://www.amazon.com/QIZHI-Generator-Household-Lighting-Electric/dp/B081DY3QB5/ref=asc_df_B081DY3QB5/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=416796348214&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=403210874621481305&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031722&hvtargid=pla-887737022098&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=93124985239&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=416796348214&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=403210874621481305&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031722&hvtargid=pla-887737022098
Thanks. I got a big error message when I posted but I guess it went through OK.
