    Project: Facebook

Current Status of the Facebook Group

The Group Description reads: Chris Martenson is the creator
of "The Crash Course" which attempts to explain exactly how we got into
the current economic crisis. It’s completely free and is his offering
to everybody and anybody who wishes to view it.

We currently have 24 members, and the admins are Kevin (ronetnivek), Luc, and me.

——————————————————————————————————————————–

Firstly, we need to revise and extend the group description. I came up with the following, heavily influenced by Kevin’s post in the Facebook thread under the Social Networking heading:

PeakProsperity.com is the weblog built by Chris Martenson that
provides insightful analysis of current financial events, interpreted
through the lens of the "Crash Course". The Crash Course is an in-depth
consideration of the Economy, Energy, and the Environment, emphasizing
the interrelated aspects of each concept. Through this concise and
easy-to-understand video production, Chris not only explains the
fundamental causes of the current economic crisis, but also
demonstrates how the problems facing the economy are related to current
issues regarding sources of energy and climate change.

The Crash Course has had hundreds of thousands of visits since its inception; the information provided is vital, and eye-opening. As Chris says, "Simply, in order to know where we are headed, we have to know where we
are. And in order to know where we are, we have to know where we came
from." That is precisely what the Crash Course accomplishes, and in language accessible to all, no matter how unexposed one may be to economics.
Chris is passionate about informing people about the
problems we all face today and how we may try to fix them.  For this
reason, he has made "The Crash Course" completely free as an offering
to everybody and anybody who wishes to view it. We encourage you to
view the course, visit the blog, and join our thriving community.
Comments for additions, deletions, edits would be greatly appreciated.
Erik suggested some information specific to the 3 Es, which I think is a great idea. I’m working on a paragraph or two specifically about the 3 Es, with facts that people can relate to. Something like "With thousands of layoffs, an official recession in full bloom, and the Federal Government assuring eight trillion dollars worth of our taxes as loans to American corporations, it is now more important than ever to understand how our economy works." A statement like that for each of the economy, environment, and energy. Then an obvious question like, "So how are these facts related, and what does that mean for me?", followed be a sentence or two to tie it all together. Naturally i’ll post it here for comments.
———————————————————————————————————————————

Kevin also proposed a three point plan as follows, with my comments/additions in italics:

  1. Ask visitors to/members of PeakProsperity.com to join the
facebook group.  Perhaps there could be an announcement on the homepage
for a few days, so regular visitors see it. This would include putting a thread in the general forums with the information.
  2. After the group
has a few more members, perhaps send a message to all members of the
group with a request to invite all their friends to join – maybe
offering some prepared messages that they could use.  If Chris were a
member himself, it might be nice if he could send this message (we
could of course prepare it). This is one of the most important parts of the facebook group.
  3. I think there is also a way to
advertise the group on facebook somehow – this could probably be done
at the same time – but maybe better to let just word of mouth do most
of the work at the beginning. I think we should allow about a week once we make a public announcement of the group on the forums here, and then we should send a message to all members encouraging them to invite their friends.

Regarding things we haven’t talked about:
There’s also recent news box we can utilize for the facebook group. Some thoughts:
  1. We could copy and paste links to the Daily Digests, or have the title and link to Chris’s latest blog post.
  2. We can publicly track of membership growth (I.E. Hit 100 members Dec. 10th, 1,000 Dec 30th, etc…)
  3. We can have a "link bank" to Chris’s about me, the crash course, the blog, the affiliated sites, etc…
Please give your input! It’s a huge post, I know, but there’s a lot to finalize.
Thanks,
Christopher

    Re: Project: Facebook

The paragraph delineations were lost in the main part of post – probably because of its length. Hopefully you can figure it out…the suggested description ends with "We encourage you toview the course, visit the blog, and join our thriving community." The rest is directed at you, the brigade, for comment.

Hi Christopher,

The description sounds good to me – I might suggest a short intro to begin then an initial invitation to go to Chris’s page before the more thorough description.  My edits/suggestions below.

Cheers,

Kevin

In "The Crash Course" Chris Martenson presents an in-depth
consideration of the Economy, Energy, and the Environment.  Not only
does he explain the fundamental causes of the current economic crisis,
but he also demonstrates how the problems facing the economy are
related to concurrent issues regarding our sources of energy and
climate change.

You can watch the Introduction and first two chapters of the course in 5 minutes at https://www.peakprosperity.com/crashcourse or keep reading to learn more about the course and PeakProsperity.com.

"The Crash Course" has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people since its
inception.  The information provided is eye-opening and vital to understanding the world in which we live and how that world will change in the near future.  The course is presented in a concise and
easy-to-understand video production and in language accessible to all.  Chris wants to inform everyone about the
problems we all face today and how we may try to fix them.  For this
reason, he has made "The Crash Course" completely free, as an offering
to everybody and anybody who wishes to view it.  As Chris
says: "In order to know where we are headed, we have to know
where we
are. And in order to know where we are, we have to know where we came
from."  That is precisely what "The Crash Course" tells us.

PeakProsperity.com is the weblog built by Chris Martenson to
provide insightful analysis of current financial events, interpreted
through the lens of "The Crash Course".  On the site are daily postings with important news articles and commentary related to the concepts presented in the course.  There is also an extensive forum where on-going discussions take place on numerous topics.

We encourage you to
view the course, visit the blog, and join our thriving community.

I’ve set up the Crash Course friendfeed to pull all posts from the site, youtube, and reddit. Here’s the RSS feed.

Great work Dale.  How is Friend Feed best utilized by others?  What ways can we start to promote this?  Can we integrate it into CM.com somehow?

There seems like a lot of room for synergy here…

    Re: Project: Facebook

Christopher,

This is great!  I love the intro (with Kevin’s edits).  You guys are doing a phenomenal job.

Promotion:  I think Kevin’s promo plan is good.  Let’s ensure that we move in that direction.  Can someone be in charge of ensuring that we address all 3 phases that Kevin suggests?

As for your 3 additional points:

1.  I think a link-back to Chris’ blog post is a good idea.  Also, is Facebook like MySpace in that you can post blog entries or "bulletins" directly on your profile?  If so, we could actually copy and paste the Daily Digests and/or Blogs to the Facebook site.

2.   Tracking membership growth is a great idea.  Someone would have to be responsible for manually updating it from time to time though…

3.  I like the idea of "mapping" some of the sections of PeakProsperity.com in a link-bank.  Make sure "Community" is linked there as well as the DVD Order page.

We also want to direct people to the YouTube site as well.

Also, I see a place for photos and videos.  I have raws for the YouTube versions of the Crash Course that we might be able to post to the Facebook page as well.  In addition, I don’t think it would be a bad idea to take high-res screens of key slides (exponential curves, bubbles, etc) from the Crash Course and post them in the photos section with descriptions.

Anyway, this is excellent work.  Good job guys.

Okay, I put in the new edited description. I think it looks good.

@luc

  1. You can’t post things blog style, but you can post links. If you take a look, I posted the Daily Digest for today on the facebook page. However, I don’t think we can move the box at all, so it’d have to stay at the bottom…
  2. I can easily do that, seeing as I’m on facebook almost daily.
  3. Will work on having a nice little block of links with explanations and such in the next day or two.

Definitely post any of the videos you may have that would make a good introduction to the Crash Course.

FriendFeed is a link funnel.  Posts to any of the (currently) 49 services are made into a stream-of-links.  Works similarly to twitter which is about a stream of consciousness updates to your phone, FriendFeed is a stream of links from the social sites you — and your friends, if they join or you make for them (imaginary 🙂 — find interesting.   This means the CM.com blog entries, YouTube updates, and reddit links and discussions get posted to the CM.com FriendFeed as they occur.

All public FriendFeed entries can be seen by anyone on the net which means no need to subscribe unless you want to create one for yourself.

I use FriendFeed to see what my friends are doing online. You can see what my "home" page looks like at http://friendfeed.com/bozomind/friends

Utilization… it works like an RSS feed for what’s happening at CM.com. Since it includes blog updates from the site, we’d need to find a way to filter those out using their REST API, but it seems like it can be fed into one of those boxes on the site’s sidebar.  I think it would fit well with the Facebook group (if it can display an RSS feed) by showing what’s going on at CM.com.  Same would apply to LinkedIn if they have an RSS feed display capability. For people who use FriendFeed already, they could ‘friend’ CM.com and see those updates show up in their home FriendFeed. The FriendFeed site is like an RSS feed reader, but it is what others are reading. I don’t feed my FriendFeed into my RSS reader since I use it to only scan and sorta see into my friend’s psyche.

I feel like it’s time to post threads in the regular non-brigade forums linking to the facebook goup, and promoting its expansion. Let me know if/when i can.

Thanks!
