Oil as the cause of exponential growth in population and economy

It’s an interesting question you pose, whether oil “causes” exponential growth. There’s a recurring joke among environment scientists, that man was put on earth to free up all the excess energy stored during the eons when oil, coal and natural gas formed.

It’s not so much an “oil causes exponential growth” issue.

Most of the world’s countries economic models require two things for sustained growth – consumption of resources and consumption of energy.

It just so happens that the vast majority of the energy required for this growth is petro-energy, so while oil doesn’t cause exponential growth, it is a factor.

And in an ironic twist of your terms, our current growth models DO require exponential consumption of resources and petro-energy.

Indeed, it is the exponential debt-based monetary system which requires exponential growth, oil consumption is what facilitates the growth. One of the big questions of the CC is what happens when we run out of surplus? what happens in a world dominated by an exponential growth paradigm when the means of rapid growth run out?

I’m rootin’ for transcendental paradigm shift.

When, would you say, were those economic models proposed and when did they get traction?  I’m not certain, but it does seem that take-off did not begin until oil became a factor.

That asked, I believe the cause of exponential population growth is the conflation of the concepts of growth and prosperity in too many minds, policies and strategies.  CM is correct when he stresses the need to choose one or the other.
