Hey Brandon,

Thanks for setting up a filespace. I’m working on my own CC-based powerpoint (and I think some other folks have done this too) and would like a place to post my stuff in case anyone else can use all or part of it. You mention this space for promotion, but could we use it for content as well?

Sure thing…The way I see it, we should use it for anything CC or 3E related.  I read in another thread from the Admin that "There will be some new capabilities coming before long that will help you to accomplish this [file uploading/storage]" so if nothing else, the grou.ps file center can be its temporary home until something better comes along here, then perhaps the files can be left, or moved.

I’ve got the file center set up so all you have to do is put in your email and make a password and you have instant access in about 3 seconds…no approval or confirmation necessary.

To post the link here, just right-click on the file after it’s uploaded and say "copy link location" (or you browser’s equivalent), then paste it in a thread.

Good luck, and thanks for sharing!

Brandon,

I found it, I used it to upload my flyer. It works great!  Thank you soooo much!

I accidently uploaded my partner’s picture instead of mine and then I didn’t seem to be able to change it.  So, if you see me looking like a girl on that site … oh, well.

This is going to be a great tool for us to share promotional materials.  Even if things only stay there 30 days or so, it will be long enough for active brigade members to find it and download it to their pcs.

Snowshoebob,

Did you put your power points up there already?  Thanks … Don

Don,

Glad it’s working out…it’s good to hear that, at least for now, I chose wisely.  I see your picture… to my disappointment it is the same one here on the CM forums… I was looking forward to getting a laugh!

It was probably just loaded in your browser’s flush on your computer and displaying the old picture.  It’s changed.

The files should stay there indefinitely…that was a big reason for me to go with groups.  I don’t forsee us using all of our storage or bandwidth anytime soon, unless we get crazy with videos.  Grou.ps is still an internet company though and the service is free, so I’d certainly keep a copy of the files on your own in case tomorrow they vanish.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know it’s working!

If there is enough space available, I can upload the Crash Course in iPod-ready format.  They are in 3 zip archives just under 100MB each…

I’ve had trouble uploading files that large, but supposedly it is allowed up to 100MB.  You can give it a try, but I’ve been frusterated with server time-outs with uploads that large.

I’m hoping they get it fixed…but so far files over 10MB haven’t worked out for me.

Server timed out for me, too.

No such luck!  🙁

    Server Timout

It’s been like that for a while…I’m beginning to think that it will be a long term problem with gou.ps…too bad, it’s great in so many other ways.

There are still other options besides grou.ps….give me through the weekend to investigate and I’ll get back with you.

    Re: Off-Site File Hosting

So, I just spent several hours researching for alternative to Grou.ps…I still say that for the price (free) it can’t be beat…but of course it needs to work!

So after doing the research and finding that I still really like this service I decided to go back and test a couple of features which hadn’t been working lately.  I tested the photo upload in a different Grou.ps group I am a part of, and all of a sudden it’s working now.  We don’t use the photos section for the Martenson Brigade but this encouraged me to test the files section again.

I tested a 20MB file, which previously had no hope of working correctly.  This time, IT WORKED.

It did take 10 minutes with my connection, which http://speedtest.net/ clocked at .5 Mb/s or 500Kb/s.

This would mean that a 100 MB file would take me around 50 minutes to upload.

The good news is that it seems to be working, at least with the size file I tested, which previously was not working.

So jkibbe, know your upload speed in order to set your expectations, then try again and see how it goes.

I uploaded the three files no prob – I just had to let them ride for a while.

If anyone wants iPod-ready CC videos, download them and try them out.  If everything seems okay, the links can be shared with others (unless bandwidth from grou.ps is a concern…)
