N95 masks with valves
In Chris’ short video about wearing masks, he mentioned that masks “with the valve” are not effective. I have the 3M Cool Flow masks that have a valve as seen here:
There is filter media in the “cool flow” valve. Are these effective in blocking both the inbound and outbound particles?
I also have one with a valve. It pretty much only protects the user. Put it on and breath through it and you can feel air coming out to the plastic vent cover. If a person is sick they should block the valve with tape on the inside. Since we do not know if we are asymptomatic, it might be a good idea to do that anyway. Someone creative can figure out a type of material to jam over the flapper to filter the air that way. Another thing a person can do is wear a scarf over it or a surgical mask.
I noticed it does keep air from being projected out ward as it is mainly directed down and only really noticeable when breathing really hard. It also catches droplets that can contaminate surfaces like a homemade mask.
Blocking inbound yes, blocking outbound no….unless you prohibit the valve from opening.
The first post in this thread mentioned Chris’s video on masks. I tried searching but did not find it. Can someone provide me a link? Thanks
The poster said that Chris felt they were not effective. If you put tape to block the valve does that make it effective since you are blocking outbound or is it in Chris’s evaluation still not effective in protecting inbound and the wearer? Thanks in advance for your help.
You mean the same masks that Chris recommended in this post?
