How to keep a 4 stroke from grenading?

Buddy recently purchased an older yz450f to re-enter the sport. I warned him that when it grenades, it might be costly. What are the greatest things to do to keep these motorcycles reliable and in good shape? Oil, valve adjustments, and so forth

4 stroke engine oil are common, while air filter changes are much more often. Both are inexpensive when compared to the expense of a new crate motor. An oil change takes me 3 hours, and an air filter takes me 1 or 2 rides (a “ride” for me is usually 1-2 hours of riding time).

Use Synthetic oil…don’t over rev it.
