    Happy 5th Birthday Ethereum

Well it has been 5 years. It is amazing how time flies. It seems like yesterday I was acquiring my first Ethers. % years and a lot has changed. You won’t see much discussion here at PP about the blockchain revolution and how it is affecting finance, but here is a newsletter the I recommend for keeping up with Ethereum. Consensys is a company started by Joe Lubin a cofounder of Ethereum.

Happy Birthday and many more to come.

Ethereum never had a mining algorithm that was designed to advance science, so I would never invest there.

C’mon, jvanname, that’s the second time you’ve made that statement. I smell another agenda. Why don’t you quit being incoherent – it’s not as cute as you seem to think – and tell us all what you’re trying to sell?

Ethereum ICO .35 current price $394.94

jvanname I totally agree based on the numbers in 5 years it has been a terrible investment. Of course it is revolutionizing finance and smart contracts. The amount of innovation it has unleashed in the crypto space has been nothing short of phenomenal. But I get your point it is a horrible investment.

So jvanname I get that you are a savvy investor, so can you point me in the direction of an investment that will give a return over 1000% in 5 years.

I will hang up and listen

Whether it’s a horrible investment or not entirely depends on when you get in and when you sell. Right now seems to be the beginning of a new solid bull run, so now might be a good time.

Ethereum’s scaling problems are still massive, however, while up-and-coming technologically-superior competitors become increasingly viable, e.g. Cardano which comes with mathematical proofs of lack of bugs.

If ETH’s scaling problems are massive, how would you describe those of the old man BTC?  Is BTC now truly the “Gold” of crypto’s, whereby it’s mined, then put back into cold storage as a hold, never to be transacted with again?  Thank you, Jim

They are different beasts, as one is about monetary value transfers (BTC transactions) and long-term store-of-value, while the other is more about smart contract microtransaction programmatic calls, which require a much higher througput (transactions per second) to be properly functional. Both run into troublesome bottlenecks (scaling problem), where BTC tx fees just recently reached I think $5 (and $50 at the peak of the December 2017 bubble), and Ethereum can be slowed to a crawl by a single dApp like CryptoKitties or aggressive gambling ones. But BTC has tons of alternatives for its first function (value transfer), such as BCH, LTC, NANO, FTM, etc, and for the 2nd function (digital gold) it works just fine. Meanwhile ETH continues to have by far the largest number of dedicated developers of any smart contract platform, but is technologically a dinosaur (in crypto terms) and safely upgrading a live smart contract PoW blockchain to PoS is extremely tricky and of a complexity that defies the combined skills of all the developers… which may allow competitors to overcome the network effects (first-mover advantage).
