    Re: Getting the word out.

Well, I received my shipment of dvds today, and made a brief visit to a couple libraries to talk about donating the dvd to their video collections…so far I’ve been received very warmly, plan to hit a few more tomorrow.

So I have a suggestion: I’m thinking that we should set up an official online map upon which we can mark where we’ve been, so that we can be more strategic- avoiding over-saturation or identifying areas which need attention. I realize that being in the early stages, it may seem unnecessary, maybe even comical, but I have deep faith that it won’t be too long before this takes off in a truly viral way. I also am aware that not everyone is actually taking this route: a door to door public campaign- but maybe there are enough to warrant keeping track? It might just be a good inspirational kick to see it multiplying visually.

Does anyone know how to set such a thing up? Our own googlemap page, where we can put up "thumbtacks" or stickynotes identifying what has been covered.

    Re: Getting the word out.

as of 2:47 PM today, my contact in the City of Westminster said:

It’s taken awhile but I’ve just finished watching four of them this afternoon and I’ve emailed links to this to four other people in my department.  Very interesting stuff.  I think I just have four left to watch.  I should be able to finish it up tomorrow.

@dps: That’s awesome! I just got my DVDs today, and plan on taking them to the nearby libraries. Time to start getting the word out in suburban Chicago.

@yoshi: I think you do that somehow through the "my maps" function of google maps…perhaps we’d need a chrismartenson gmail account to do it? I’ll look into that tomorrow – it’s a great idea. I know i’ve at least seen it used by Young Americans for Liberty to show their chapter locations.

Yoshi,

Great idea.  I love it!

Google Maps has an API which can be used for such purposes.  A quick Google search might even find some free applications that utilize Google Maps to allow you to add your own "waypoints."

Let me make a suggestion:  Post a separate topic in the "DVD Promotion" folder describing your idea in more detail.  If you would like to head this project up, that would be great.  It may be less work than one might think if there is already free software out there that utilizes the Google Maps API for waypoint addition.

This way, your idea can be more visible and we can continue to reserve this thread for Don’s Westminister City presentaiton updates.

I look forward to seeing what comes of this!

Thanks.

Luc

EDIT 12/19/08 12:06 AM

I just checked out the MyMaps section and you can do exactly what Futuo talks about.  We can create a Chris Martenson profile where we track the distribution efforts.  I also see this becoming something we can use to track special events, etc.

Here is the info page on it:  http://maps.google.com/help/maps/mymaps/create.html

When you set up the profile, make sure it is called "PeakProsperity.com."  Send me the login info by email.

Again, great idea!

    Re: Getting the word out.

Ok.  I’m starting my strategy in a new town.  Longmont, CO, USA.

Today I emailed their planning group with the following text.  This time I didn’t have an individual’s email, but just a generic email address for planning.  We’ll see how it goes.

"I’m a citizen that works in Longmont.  Therefore, I have an interest in the long-term health of Longmont.  I have found what I believe is very important information about how our future is going to be very different from our past.  Is there someone in your planning group that would be willing to discuss this with me.  I ask for 15 minutes.

Best wishes … Don"

    Re: Getting the word out.

Have not heard back from Westminster again yet.  I’m planning to call them Monday, my day off.

Got this text back from Longmont via email yesterday:

begin quote

Good afternoon, Mr. Studinski,

Your email has been forwarded to me.  I am the manager of Long Range Planning for the City and am happy to meet with you.  Either email or call me so we can set up a time that works for both of us.  Your email was quite general so depending upon the nature of our conversation, there may be other folks in the City you may be interested in meeting.  I have also copied XXXXX and YYYYY.  XXX is much involved in active living programs as well as Livewell Longmont.  YYY is the City’s Environmental Sustainability Coordinator.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Enjoy your day,

Froda Greenberg, AICP
Principal Planner
303/651-8326
end quote

I’ll write back to Longmont today proposing a meeting in face on Monday.  That will be tricky as I have my son, Jeremy, all day that day for my holiday time.

Now you are up-to-date.  I’m hoping my DVDs are at the POB by now.  I’ll check tomorrow.  … Don

Don,

I love how you keep everyone updated continually on how your project develops.  This is exacly how we had hoped these forums would be used.  You are a pleasure to work with.

Thanks.

    Re: Getting the word out.

I have much exciting news to report, but no time to get on the forums until tomorrow, Christmas day.  A brief snippet is that I met with the City of Longmont Principal Planner this morning at 8:00 MST for a happy and cordial 30 minute meeting where we went through the 1st 5 chapters.  She’s hooked and I’ll be reeling her in ASAP.  She wants me to call their Environmental Sustainability Coordinator first of the year for follow-up.  I’m not putting in their names because I have not asked for permission to do so.  Meanwhile the planner over at the city of Westminster has completed the crash course and is forwarding me on to other members of the city’s staff.

I seem to have stumbled onto a very effective entry point for brigaders to get access to their local government officials.  This may be a path that others want to duplicate.

Smiling … Don
