Get a non-vaxxed blood donor friend to back you up
Just thinking about the probability (small but real) that my family or that I would need blood in case of an accident or medical emergency. Would it not be wise to find a friend willing to donate who is non-vaccinated? Similarly I want to offer my blood and know which friends match my blood type. Obviously this needs to be done on a local basis within small community groups.
Del Bigtree had to personally deal with this issue a few weeks ago. If you knew you had a procedure coming up, then I believe friends could donate ahead of time because of the extent of processing involved. Too much time involved. What Del encountered was it wasn’t possible on an emergency basis. He had to fly from Texas to Cancum where there was a supply of known unvaccinated blood. There is also the question of how much blood you might need. One friend can only donate so much.
Yes, an issue. Especially since the US blood banks are not keeping track of whether people have been vaccinated. Del had only one unit available to him in Texas, and only because someone at the hospital was willing to make calls to the donors to check whether they had been vaccinated.
Del discusses his situation in depth at the end of two TheHighwire episodes ago.
Good idea! Fortunately my husband, son and I are all unvaxxed with natural covid antibodies and hubby and son are both O+ and I am A+.
The other avenue is to try and find someone who habitually doesn’t use blood products (just ask the question); other than bypass surgery, where the pump needs volume, or chronic severe pre-op anemia; I did not use transfusions during my surgical career (happened twice when the anaesthetists ignored me, said I would need it, and hung up a unit, later to admit it was unneeded, when I was first staring practice). (high volume, higher than mean complexity, functional surgical practice). Technique goes a very long way to not expecting to use or need transfusions.
