    First burn of the year

One of my favorite rituals that mark the year is the first burn in the woodstove. It marks the turning of the season as we move from the warm, generous, bright days of summer into the fall and winter ahead. Its been called the “contemplative season”. The hay is in, the wood is mostly cut, the larders are full to bursting, and its at this time that a man might finally take a breath and survey a panorama of bright turning leaves as a celebratory backdrop against the fruits of his labor.

The air is crisp, and the leaves crunch under foot as I carry buckets and stack wood against the coming cold. This is my attempt at a “Holz Housen” a German, self shielding wood stacking method…. [ roof is still in progress ];

Even the animals seem to sense the change;

If I was a smokin’ man, Id light a pipe, but I’ll have to settle for an afternoon stout. Something dark and bitter seems appropriate;

Cheers, my friends. Stay warm!

    First burn of the year / A Pint of Plain Is Your Only Man

The Workman’s Friend (A Pint of Plain Is Your Only Man)

— Flann O’ Brien (1911-1966)

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night –
A pint of plain is your only man.

When money’s tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt –
A pint of plain is your only man.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.

When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare –
A pint of plain is your only man.

In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life –
A pint of plain is your only man.

Enjoy, Brushhog

    First burn of the year

It’s the most wonderful form of heat. Labour intensive but with high reward. My job lately is to help out the local firewood guy. Good, hard work!
