Finding the Truth behind the American Hologram
From the above:
In Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, Jared Diamond found that a common factor was the myopic and self-serving decision-making of elites who believed they could insulate themselves from the consequences of societal disasters. As the elites reaped the rewards, the resulting damage to everyone else built up over time until calamity struck. The grim reality is that history has proven such cycles of extreme wealth inequality have only been broken by catastrophes –plagues, revolutions, massive wars, and collapsed states.
Cry, the Beloved Country! My benighted nation is hurtling down the same path as fast as it can go.
The federal and most state governments are climate change deniers, taken captive by fossil fuel corporations. There is a revolving door between government and fossil fuel company jobs, so cosy.
Our major cities all are suffering from severe attacks of growthitis. We are importing people at an unsustainable rate but we can’t stop because as the Federal Treasurer recently said, to slow down the rate of immigration even a little “would take billions out of the economy.”
Savage land-clearing laws have been passed in NSW and Queensland permitting private landholders to erase all vegetable and animal life from up to 90% of their land without permission. Huge areas of land have already been destroyed in this way. The goal is a monoculture of Black Angus cattle for the execrable McDonald’s.
The Feds propose to make HUGE reductions to the areas of marine national parks to permit trawling and longline fishing. Erase the land, erase the seas.
It goes on and on. There is a large segment of the population aghast at and acting against all of this — I am one —, but so far we are outnumbered, outvoted and out-shouted. Most of the population simply could not care less; tomorrow will be the same as today, she’ll be right. Let’s spend hour after hour, night after night, down the pub or the club mindlessly playing the pokies and wasting our lives.
I’m a bit depressed.
No topic area surpasses this particular one in terms of the burden it brings on those who prefer to stare at reality face-on. Its taken me decades to get over the worst of the anger, disillusionment, depression, and despair, only because this reality was clear to me a long time ago. I feel empathy for those who are newly entering this territory.
Edward Abbey used a phrase in one of his books that has stuck with me through the years, which I later realized which had been lifted from Kafka: ” there is hope, but not for us”. For me, hope is in the fact there there is a way to live on the earth where the destructive tendencies of human societies are restrained rather than enabled, as our current culture is designed to do. The source of hope won’t be realized until something more aligned with the realities of a biologically living interdependent planet manages to rise out of the post-crash ashes. If/when this new arising occurs, it will be well beyond the span of life of anyone presently alive. The best we can aspire to, is to act as imperfect bridges that will help lead to this place.
