    Licorice Root

I have been digging into everything herb or supplements that have shown or may have antiviral properties. One I came across had a clinical study that really caught my attention.

Licorice Root

There was a clinical study posted at  The Lancet.

Glycyrrhizin, an active component of liquorice roots, and replication of SARS-associated coronavirus

The most potent inhibitor of SARS-CV replication in Vero cells was glycyrrhizin, which had a selectivity index of 67.

Here is the link to the study and PDF if someone wants to dive into it further.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(03)13615-X/fulltext

Licorice root I read is not to be taken as a preventative because it has long term side effects. It also increases blood pressure so people with already high blood pressure would have to consult their doctor.

Potential Genus epidemicus candidates for Covid-19

This is a very well reasoned, competent look at potential homeopathic remedies that may turn out to be useful. It is based on case reports from mostly China, but other countries as well. It includes characteristics symptoms as presented by patients. It does not cover what homeopaths call  strange, rare and peculiar symptoms that help individualize a prescription to a patient, but this is an excellent explanation of the pool of remedies a homeopath will likely be choosing from.

The European Committee for Homeopathy defines genus epidemicus as the ‘combined symptoms of a large group of people afflicted with a disease or epidemic, or a remedy that covers all the symptoms which that particular epidemic is capable of producing.”

Coronavirus Covid-19 – Analysis of symptoms from confirmed cases with an assessment of possible homeopathic remedies for treatment and prophylaxis

FYI: I am a N.D. (1992 graduate of NCNM Portland, OR and 1996 graduate Hahnemann College of Homeopathy with 30 years experience using homeopathy (although for more chronic conditions, not global pandemics! although the same principles of prescribing apply).  My advice is to have already had a working relationship with a homeopath, as homeopaths likely will direct their attention to prescribing for established patients. Of course, I realize that it is impossible for most people out there, largely as so few homeopaths compared to the population and too late to become a new patient at this point. The time for that was years ago.  But it cannot hurt to try to find a homeopath, lay or professional, who might help in pinch if you or a loved one gets a severe case and the hospitals are overwhelmed.  Many self taught lay people successfully prescribe for large variety of acute situations.  We have a very long tradition of that all over the world. Mostly mothers prescribing for their families.

In  Little Women,  Louisa May Alcott the author, who was also a nurse by training, uses Belladonna for scarlet fever and Arnica for injuries
The first woman EVER granted a medical degree was the second wife of Samuel Hahnemann, Melanie d’Hervilly  (1800-1878.) The degree was awarded in 1840 by Allentown Homeopathic Academy, America’s first Homeopathic Medical School.  Thanks to NCH Communication Committee

Coronavirus: Medicinals, Herbals and Supplements Megathread

Functional Medicine Dr. Alex Vasquez (MD, Naturopath, and Chiropractor) has an excellent book on antiviral strategies. I have followed his work for some time, and implemented his protocol for autoimmune, which lead to disease remission.
He recently put a series of Antiviral nutritional Strategies for combatting infection with #Covid19 on Vimeo (YouTube as well, but those will likely be taken down by big brother). Here’s the link to Part 1 of 4 https://vimeo.com/395560409

    Pleurisy Root

Relieves Pneumonia
Eclectic physicians used this herb to treat mucus buildup within the lungs, a condition commonly associated with pneumonia. Traditionally, it has been used to relieve chest congestion caused by lung ailments like pneumonia, whooping cough, bronchitis, seasonal flu, and common cold. The Omaha, a native American tribe, simply consumed the root raw to treat bronchitis. The root of this plant is said to be a natural expectorant which helps liquify the mucus and facilitate its expulsion.

    Olive Leaf

I thought this was the Herbals Megathread? Why post to a new one. Thanks.

Olive leaf has Oleuropein which has shown to have antiviral properties.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3002804/

Oleuropein in Olive and its Pharmacological Effects

5.6. Antiviral effect
In a U.S. patent, it has been claimed that oleuropein has potent antiviral activities against herpes mononucleosis, hepatitis virus, rotavirus, bovine rhinovirus, canine parvovirus, and feline leukemia virus [69]. Studies have also shown that oleuropein exhibits a significant antiviral activity against respiratory syncytial virus and para-influenza type 3 virus [70].

There is also one anecdotal report that olive leaf extracts augment the activity of the HIV-RT inhibitor 3TC [71]. The olive leaf extracts were investigated for their antiviral activity against viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), a salmonid rhabdovirus, and against HIV-1 infection and replication [72]. Cell-to-cell transmission of HIV was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner with EC50s of 0.2 μg/ml, and HIV replication was inhibited in an in vitro experiment [73].

One of the suspected targets for olive leaf extract (mainly oleuropein) action is HIV-1 gp41 (surface glycoprotein subunit), which is responsible for HIV entry into normal cells. In order to establish HIV protein targets of olive leaf extract and its inhibitory action at the molecular level, Lee-Huang et al. [74] reported a joint theoretical and experimental effort has been carried out to help achieve this goal.

pharmacist here in new jersey,  Resveratrol has shown in vitro to be highly anti viral to mers which is a more virulent strain of Covid-19. 1000mg twice a day and you may never catch anything. also gargle with a solution of 2ml to 60ml povidone iodine to water ratio thru out the day  for 30 seconds.   kills everything in your mouth and deactivates proteases that helps virus replicate.  you can buy betadine mouth wash on amazon but it will take a few weeks to get here–only sold in asian countries I believe.  its been used in studies of kids in schools of Japan. take zinc with quercetin , Quercetin may be a natural zinc ionophore, meaning viral protease is halted and it dies.  of course chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine by rx are stronger zinc ionophores.
