Yea, and I think it will get much worse. Asian countries in general are really different when it comes to this. If they run into a wall, like depression, loss of job, etc. They will simply kill themselves. It’s taboo here in TW and China to ask for help of the mental help kind, if anyone can help you with difficult issues or is even qualified to do so.

It’s do good and support your family, or kill yourself.

Is this considered good…pride/honor… or do you think it is too much pride/honor?

Asian countries have historically been community driven.  As the article talks about, maybe the rapid change toward individualism contributed to the mental health problems.

When they used to have a community to lean on, now they find themselves alone.

Couldn’t agree more brandenism!

Just around the corner is another monster which lurks for the Chineese. The Drug companies are the next big business that will want to help them with their problems. Their new TV sets will be the vehicle.

Mental Health is BIG business in the US and mental health problems are treated with drugs. Our drug companies have been on an exponential growth curve for decades. Big advertising budgets used to be for cigarettes and alcohol but these days it is psychotropic drugs.

The DSM (Diagnostics and Statistics Manual), the bible of the MH industry now has over 470 "diseases" listed, none of which have any medical way of being tested and positively identified. When a person is "labeled" with one of the "diseases" in the manual, they are then prescribed a drug of choice and that is the end "of the problem". There is not a cure for any of the problems, they are simply treated   ………..until death.

And the truly amazing part of it is how these diseases get into the manual in the first place. First the taxpayers pay for a study including paying people, usually those needing some quick change or better yet, college students, to participate. Then the data is collected and cooked (Fuzzy Numbers) and then it is VOTED ON by the American Psychiatric Association committee and placed into the DSM. Then the Insurance companies have a name and number to place on the form to substantiate treatment costs.

Drug companies love problems such as suicide because it becomes really big business. It truly is a sad state of affairs because it is what the Chineese give up to become a"first world" country that is at the root of the problem.  Drugs will not cure any of it, only mask the true cause. They simple need to "JUST SAY NO."

Same thing we need to say to our Gov’t. A simple NO THANKS for all the help!

Maybe neither. I estimate that it is a lack of hope (or knowledge) that anything can be done to change the situation. Hopelessness because of an inability to be at cause goes against their tradition of values.

The US Native Americans had similar issues to deal with as regards aging. When a member was no longer able to contribute to the survival in a meaningful way they simply left the group knowing that death would be the consequence. This activty was really a point of honor rather than horror. Our modern society has simply debased the issue.

I think we will be revisiting the concept in the next twenty years.

Historically, the entire human race has been community driven…..  we were never meant to live like THIS.  My mental well being has improved out of sight since abandoning an overcrowded city (by Australian standards..!) and living in a small village of some 700 inhabitants.  We have more friends than ever, people you can rely on to help if something untoward happens…

I actually think that WTSHTF and western consumers finally realise they can no longer drive their cars, the power keeps going off with monotonous regularity and the plasma screen TV is merely a useless decoration in the living room, that the supermarket shelves are empty, and their cell phones are useless, that there will be a lot of suicides here too.  It will be one of the ugly ways population will collapse.

Dr. Bartlett did warn us that zero population growth is a mathematical certainty.  It’s too bad that this doesn’t come about from fewer births rather than too many deaths.  That seems more rational, but too many people still associate growth with prosperity.
