    Another troubling exponential curve

US prison population is another example of exponential growth that is quite troubling. The putative "Land of the Free" has the largest (and growing) prison population in the world – both absolutely and per capita – driven by the terribly misguided and expensive "War on Drugs". This is so wrong on so many levels that we should all be alarmed… The direct cost is significant and is growing at a time we can ill afford the expense. The indirect cost and opportunity cost are harder to quantify, but not insubstantial. And the implications for our "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are frightening.
