Stocks Hold Steady After Starting Year With a Sell-Off (jdargis)

The markets got a helping hand from Chinese government. China’s central bank on Tuesday said it had poured about $20 billion into the financial system in an effort to help steady the markets and ease some liquidity concerns.

More People Turn to Faith-Based Groups for Health Coverage (Mike F.)

A growing number of people are turning to health-care ministries to cover their medical expenses instead of buying traditional insurance, a trend that could challenge the stability of the Affordable Care Act.

China To Impose Fee On Cancelled Orders (Aaron M.)

China is taking a unique approach to regulating markets. They are looking to impose a tax or fee per order to prevent traders from flooding exchanges with orders they don’t fill by charging market participants fees for habitual cancellations. This scheme would not take effect until 2017. This is clearly targeting the high-frequency traders. This proposed new legislation has been behind the sell-off today.

Congress Is A Hypocrite (Tiffany A.)

It’s important to understand that Hoekstra et al aren’t upset at NSA spying on foreign governments per se. Hoekstra himself has said that “Spying is a matter of fact … foreign governments who are shocked they’ve been spied on should relax, because they, too, gather information.” Hoekstra is only upset because this incident involved a government he likes.

Obama pushing thousands of new regulations in Year 8 (jdargis)

Much of this work will be carried out in the coming months by career bureaucrats working in the bowels of federal agencies, but the cumulative effect adds up to something larger: A final-year sprint by a president intent on using executive power to improve the lives of American workers and consumers — in many instances over loud objections from the businesses that will have to pay for it.

What Comes After The Commodities Bust? (Tom K.)

The toxic combination of lower capital expenditures and constrained output will result in another spike in prices, one that few will anticipate. The current Federal Reserve policy, which isn’t conducive to higher commodity prices, will also make the price spike more difficult to see ahead of time. However, in the interim, until policy changes at the Fed or OPEC are enacted, prices will remain below the marginal cost to maintain production.

Solitary confinement of Nebraska youth said 'disturbing' (jdargis)

"I think it's fair to say as we look to comparisons with our sister states and across the national landscape that Nebraska's use and policies regarding juvenile solitary confinement truly shock the conscience," ACLU of Nebraska Executive Director Danielle Conrad said Monday morning.

U.S. sues Volkswagen over defeat device scandal (jdargis)

Volkswagen’s offending 3.0 liter diesel engines, however, "run software logic and/or calibrations that produce compliant emission results under an ECM calibration referred to as the “temperature conditioning mode.” At other times during normal vehicle operation, the 3.0L Subject Vehicles’ ECM software run a separate “normal mode” that reduces the effectiveness of the emission control system.” The result of these two modes was "increased NOx emissions by a factor of up to 9 times above the EPA-compliant levels.”

The Deep State.

This is what wikispooks.com has to say about the deep state.  You will have to decide whether they are a disinformation site or not.

The deep state, state within a state, shadow government, or permanent government is a network of individuals and groups which are in actual charge of a national government. Many "democratically elected" governments work as fronts, providing a level of plausible deniability and allowing the deep state to operate in secret. On matters of deep political importance, the public machinery of government is routinely subverted by agents of the deep state.

Newton falls over.

Is Nothing sacred?

Apparently Newton was just guessing.

If that doesn't make you laugh out loud, check your pulse .

Great point Arthur!

I try to spot the lies of commission as well as omission in the media.  Sometimes they just lie and distort outright, other times they simply say nothing at all.

Watch the H-Bomb by North Korea spend about a half a day on the newspapers radar screens.  NK has no oil, so the US power structure doesn't really care so no time at all will be spent on it.

If, instead, that had been Iran torching off a device, there would be a month-long orgy of condemnation leading to massive sanctions and possibly more war-like activities including more cyber terror, scientist assassinations, and drone over flights.

Map for consideration: China really a challenge?

See Mauldin.  His group says: NO WAY!!  The East near the coast is quite developed, but somewhat to the West and all the way westward, not so and much poverty, with no jobs, etc.

Additionally, see FRONT page of NYTimes for a really GREAT map that summarizes the Shite-Sunni Divide: explains much, methinks.  Enjoy,  Ken
