Study finds people transformed how species associated after 300 million years (richcabot)

In assessing the cause of the dramatic change they found, the researchers first eliminated five possible sources of error. “Senior author Nicholas Gotelli, of the University of Vermont, developed careful methods to guard against false positive results,” Waller says. “With a result as unexpected as this, we wanted to be very careful to make sure that the pattern was real and not an artifact of the methods we were using, or the particular datasets we looked at.”

Montreal residents will have to register their fireplaces and wood-burning stoves — or face a $500 fine (westcoastjan)

Starting in 2018, wood-burning appliances will be banned unless they meet the rigorous new emission standards of 2.5 grams of fine particles or less per hour. The bylaw is among the strictest in North America, said Réal Ménard, the city’s executive committee responsible for the environment. Presently, transforming a stove or fireplace with inserts so that it is in compliance with the coming regulations costs between $2,000 and $8,000.

The Devil's Holiday Letter: 2015 Ignorance, My Poor Dear Americans, Will Not Save You (Don R.)

My lackeys in the Central State have made a mockery of the rule of law, letting financial crimes go not just unpunished but rewarded. The blatant injustice that roams the land like a foul, slobbering beast--there are two sets of laws and two sets of books now, one for the financial Elites and their political toadies, and another one for the tax donkeys beneath them--this will eventually ignite the firestorm I seek.

Caught On Tape: U.S. Senator Issues Dire Warning On Unchecked Executive Power (pinecarr)

To hear a U.S. Senator sound more like a statesman than a corrupt hack politician for sale to the highest bidder, is such a breath of fresh air I almost can’t believe it’s real. Rather than talking down to voters, he challenges them to become more enlightened, nonpartisan-thinkers with a sense of history. He challenges all of us to shake ourselves from an ignorant, fear-based stupor and reclaim the true genius and beauty at the heart of the American experiment.

Anonymous declares cyber war on Turkey over ‘supporting ISIS’ (richcabot)

The massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on Turkish websites last week, initially attributed to spooky “Russian hackers,” has been clarified with Anonymous issuing a video claiming responsibility and declaring cyber war on Turkey for supporting terrorists of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Zimbabwe looks to Chinese yuan as legal tender (locksmithuk)

China has become the largest investor in Zimbabwe, which has been shunned by the West over its human rights record and is struggling to emerge from a deep 1999-2008 recession that forced the government to ditch its own currency in 2009.

What Silicon Valley’s Orgy Of Christmas Party Excess Says About America (PBD)

One would think that a company in such obvious decline would demonstrate a modicum of frugality.

Think again. Yahoo’s annual Christmas party this year was a Roaring 20s / Great Gatsby theme, complete with champagne towers and a vintage Rolls Royce.

Texas State Gold Depository Will Be a Haven from a Shaky Financial System (thc0655)

The first batch of gold destined for the new depository likely will be about 5,600 gold bars owned by the University of Texas Investment Management Company. The bars, valued at about $600 million, currently are stored in a vault at HSBC Bank in New York.

The Fed’s Rate Hike Hoax: There Is No Short Term Money Market (richcabot)

Today there are very few banks which need to borrow reserves to meet their requirement, and those that do are certainly not representative of the market as a whole. These would be banks in distress, or banks who are acting at the behest of the Fed to make it appear that a real market exists. But in reality, banks that need to borrow Fed Funds today are more like people who are so short of cash that they are forced to resort to payday lenders to pay their bills. The Fed Funds rate is therefore the equivalent of the payday lender loan shark rate for banks who are so short of cash, they can’t pay their bills.

Tim Cook says there isn't a trade-off between security and privacy (richcabot)

In the wake of recent terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, there has been increased demands that tech companies should provide ways for law enforcement agencies to be able to access encrypted communications, which terrorists are believed to take advantage of to plan their attacks and win over followers.

Large permanent reserves required for effective conservation of old fish (richcabot)

The study combined fish censuses from more than 300 coral reefs to examine how they changed in response to fishing methods and the number of years they had been closed to fishing. They also compared the reefs in marine reserves with the remote Chagos Archipelago, a relatively pristine marine ecosystem off limits to exploitation due to its status as a large military base in the Indian Ocean. The authors built on previous work that had largely concluded that recovery times for reefs can be reliably based on the biomass of the fish. When looking at all factors, the authors found that biomass was one of the few measures that leveled off after a limited number of years, whereas metrics including body sizes, age, and feeding habits continued to change for 40 years and growth rates were projected to decline for over 100 years.

Crude Oil And Energy Market: Extreme Readings Suggest A Rally Is Coming (Taki T.)

Our article triggered quite some interest in social media, so we are following up yesterday’s article with additional data points. According to our methodology, sentiment is key, as well as the futures market structure (only relevant for commodoties), next to one technical indicator (the 90 week moving average). Let’s review those indicators for crude oil and XLE.

Documents reveal Canadian teenager target of GMO lobby (westcoastjan)

The strategizing was revealed in emails, along with thousands of other pages of documents released in a freedom of information request by US Right to Know (USRTK), a non-profit advocacy group funded by the Organic Consumers Association concerned with the safety of GMOs.

California Passes Neighborhood Food Act (Wendy SD)

The Neighborhood Food Act, AB 2561... removes barriers to growing food for personal consumption, the bill ensures that people have the right to grow food for themselves regardless of their housing status, and includes provisions that would completely overturn local zoning ordinances that prohibit growing food in front yards, back yards, or otherwise vacant lots (assuming they’re owned by the grower) in “residential” areas and other types of zones. ..by voiding contrary language in existing lease or homeowner’s associations agreements.

Forests At Risk (richcabot)

Loss of broad-scale forest cover over the Southwest could contribute additional carbon to the atmosphere, creating additional warming. This is because trees and understory vegetation, such as shrubs and bushes, sequester carbon from the atmosphere. Less vegetation means less carbon capture, which can create a negative feedback loop that can accelerate climate change, Rauscher said.

Merry Christmas, Happy holidays, and Happy new year everyone!

Well, my bees are flying in and out of their hive because it's nearly 70 degrees here in western MA, so I guess that's a first...or the start of a new, weird tradition ("Daddy!  Let's go watch the bees, it's Christmas eve!")

Family is arriving soon, Grandparents, and then more family and we're going to settle into our own routine of love and connection.

I really do have a wonderful family, and so much to be thankful for.

Thanks to everyone here in this community, my daily dose of (in)sanity is best met here, and there's nobody I'd rather share it with.

So enjoy whatever celebrations you were born into, and trust that they all have the same root desire of providing ritual, meaning and connection, so we're all the same that way.

Data/power breakthrough.

The photonic I/O on the chip is also energy-efficient, using only 1.3 picojoules per bit, equivalent to consuming 1.3 watts of power to transmit a terabit of data per second. In the experiments, the data was sent to a receiver 10 meters away and back.

And

The achievement opens the door to a new era of bandwidth-hungry applications. One near-term application for this technology is to make data centers more green. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, data centers consumed about 91 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2013, about 2 percent of the total electricity consumed in the United States, and the appetite for power is growing exponentially.

California Passes Neighborhood Food Act

That's a great news! But at the same time telling how disconnected from roots a society is when it needs to pass a law that "gives the right" to grow food on own's property.

Where I live, I can produce my own vegetables without much restrictions, but, I can only raise up to 6.25 egg-laying chickens, or 12.5 chickens for meat (not both), and ducks are not allowed to go on water (yes, you read well, ducks are not allowed to go on water)... but I can keep two full horses (aka: manure extruders!).

This is what happen when the form supersedes the substance...

My bees are out too (+15 Celsius outside) and no snow at all. First time I see this in Quebec. I could try to grate some ice cubes...

Best wishes to everyone.
