Daily Digest 12/1 - Smog Nightmare In Bejing, From Goldman Sachs To The Fed

Why Do Former Goldman Sachs Bankers Keep Landing Top Slots at the Federal Reserve? (richcabot)

During the last year, three vacancies have opened up to head regional Federal Reserve banks around the country. One by one, all three of the spots have gone to former insiders from Goldman Sachs. First, Goldman Sachs trustee Patrick Harker essentially picked himself to lead the Philadelphia Fed, stepping down as chair of the Philadelphia Fed Board of Directors to allow for his own selection. In August, former Goldman Sachs Vice Chair Robert Kaplan was chosen to head the Dallas Fed despite sitting on the board of directors for the headhunting firm tasked with finding a new Dallas Fed president.

MyRA: Worst Retirement Option Ever? (Tiffany B.)

At the beginning of the month, MyRA became available to the masses — a new government-developed retirement account. It’s a concept presented in President Obama’s 2014 State of the Union, and we had hoped the savings plan wouldn’t come to fruition. At the time, we warned this was something you should avoid like the plague.

The Bush presidency was my fault: I am so sorry my work stopped the Florida recount (richcabot)

Specifically, Judge Wells wrote, “I agree with a quote by John Allen Paulos, a professor of mathematics at Temple University, when he wrote that, ‘the margin of error in this election is far greater than the margin of victory, no matter who wins.’ Further judicial process will not change this self-evident fact and will only result in confusion and disorder.” (Incidentally, the CNN senior political analyst at the time, Jeff Greenfield, cited the quote in his book on the 2000 presidential election, “Oh, Waiter! One Order of Crow!,” and wrote, “The single wisest word about Florida was delivered not by a pundit but by mathematician John Allen Paulos.” I doubt, however, that Greenfield thought it was reason to stop the recount.)

Donors gave a super PAC $6 million. Candidates actually got about $140,000 (richcabot)

Her money went to the American Legacy PAC, an organization with ties to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. With Carson as the face of its Save Our Healthcare campaign, American Legacy raised close to $6 million in 2014 — and spent nearly all of it paying the consultants and firms that raised the money. Just 2% was donated to Republican candidates and committees, financial reports show.

Ex-US Intelligence Chief on Islamic State's Rise: 'We Were Too Dumb' (richcabot)

There were all kinds of strategic and tactical warnings and lots of reporting. And even the guys in the Islamic State said that they were going to attack overseas. I just don't think people took them seriously. When I first heard about the recent attacks in Paris, I was like, "Oh, my God, these guys are at it again, and we're not paying attention." The change that I think we need to be more aware of is that, in Europe, there is a leadership structure. And there's likely a leader or a leadership structure in each country in Europe. The same is probably similar for the United States, but just not obvious yet.

More like Reagan than FDR: I’m a millennial and I’ll never vote for Hillary Clinton (richcabot)

I find Clinton to be disingenuous; a political insider, an opportunist who will say anything to win — and I’m not the only one. Polls consistently indicate higher unfavorable views of her than positive. Even though her positive numbers are higher than the other candidates’, she has negative ratio (which Bernie does not).

Paris Talks Fall Short On Climate, But Shift To Clean Energy Is Clear (Tom K.)

At the same time, a group of 28 investors including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos pledged to pour private money into carrying promising clean tech into commercialization. Gates framed the initiative, dubbed the Breakthrough Energy Coalition, as a complement to the publically-funded R&D announcement put forward by the U.S. government and its partners.

Confidence In Oil Hub Security Shaken By Oklahoma Earthquakes (Merle2)

"We're in amongst about 18 tanks here. Anywhere from 350,000 barrels to 575,000 barrels," says Mike Moeller, senior director of midcontinent assets for Enbridge Energy.

He walks through the tank farm and worries about all the industry-linked earthquakes. These tanks were built to national standards that account for some shaking, but they weren't constructed with serious earthquakes in mind.

Beijing factories shut amid smog nightmare (lesphelps)

Airlines cancelled over 30 flights from Beijing and Shanghai, many to highly polluted Shaanxi province which is a key coal producer.

There Was No Global Warming 'Hiatus,' 40-Study Review Concludes (richcabot)

"There has never been a pause in global warming unless you try to create one by looking at an insufficiently large number of data points," said lead author Stephan Lewandowsky, a social scientist and professor of psychology at the University of Bristol in the U.K. The study's co-authors are James S. Risby, a climate scientist with Australia's national science agency, and Naomi Oreskes, a science historian at Harvard University.

Ominous development in Greece

There's been an ominous development in Greece signaling a wider future seizure of private assets (including cash, jewelry, etc) by the Greek government.  Coming soon to a jurisdiction near you...

Cash ‘under the mattress’ totaling more than 15,000 euro, jewelry and other valuable items such as diamonds and gemstones, should be declared to electronic system of tax authorities, Taxisnet, as of 1. January 2016. Next to properties and vehicles and shares, now the taxpayers will also have to declare their deposits. And not only that. They will have to fill if they rent bank lockers and if yes, also the name of the bank and the branch, even if abroad...

Note that this Assets declaration process will initially apply to lawmakers, journalists, public servants etc and is the rehearsal for the creation of the electronic property & assets register that will be extended to all taxpayers.

The triumph of the Right Brain.

The tests, in which 95 channels of data were recorded and then investigated, included multiple technical changes to validate the thermodynamic results.  In all cases, the results were consistent: the data demonstrate with very high confidence that the Brillouin Energy HHT™ prototype repeatedly produced lab-scale excess heat from LENR. "I was given full access to the experiments," said Mr. Halem. "I was able to confirm, with a high degree of confidence, excess energy output above chemical and likely due to a nuclear reaction."
