The paranoid world of London's super-rich: DNA-laced security mist and superyacht getaway submarines (richcabot)

Business is booming because billionaires are a paranoid bunch. Take one who recently moved to Mayfair. ‘He wanted everything, from protection from cyber hacking through to physical intrusion and kidnapping,’ says Bond Gunning. ‘We ended up installing fingerprint-activated locks for family members and programmable keys for staff that limit the time they are allowed into the property and the rooms they are able to enter and exit.

Saving Syria’s ‘Lost Generation’ (jdargis)

But the very fact that Oxford’s action made news highlights the crisis in Syrian higher education: Four academics are more than typically get placed at a single university, according to CARA, due to the expense involved in doing so. But it’s also a paltry figure when compared with, say, the thousands of students in Gulf Coast colleges who were temporarily relocated to universities throughout the United States and abroad in a matter of weeks following Hurricane Katrina in 2005

What Will It Mean If the Yuan Gets Reserve-Currency Status? (jdargis)

In a 2009 speech, People’s Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said the global financial crisis underscored the risks of a global monetary system that relies on national reserve currencies. While not mentioning the yuan by name, Zhou argued that the SDR should take on the role of a “super-sovereign reserve currency,” with its basket expanded to include currencies of all major economies.

Gold And Stocks Trend Up: Real Gold Bottomed At $1149 (dg)

Now let's look at what I consider the most dishonest of Gold charts, showing Spot Gold as priced by the KRIMEX. Would you not say that it was not the greatest instruments of suppression and depression that you have seen compared with the Real Deliverable Gold. And like Fluoride if it is added to your water, there seems hardly a way to avoid it.

The True Costs Of Driving (jdargis)

While congressional bailouts of the Highway Trust Fund have made this subsidy more apparent, it has actually never been the case that road users paid their own way. Not only that, but the amount of their subsidy has steadily increased in recent years. The share of the costs paid from road-user fees has dropped from about 70 percent in the 1960s to less than half today, according to the study.

Self-absorbed millennials? Not the ones who are caregivers for their elders. (jdargis)

The typical caregiver is still a 50-something woman feeding, bathing and transporting her ailing mother. But an estimated 9.5 million millennials now provide such help, usually to a parent or grandparents, according to recent reports by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving.

This 11-year-old is selling cryptographically secure passwords for $2 each (jdargis)

Diceware is a well-known decades-old system for coming up with passwords. It involves rolling actual six-sided dice as a way to generate truly random numbers that are matched to a long list of English words. Those words are then combined into a non-sensical string ("ample banal bias delta gist latex") that exhibits true randomness and is therefore difficult to crack. The trick, though, is that these passphrases prove relatively easy for humans to memorize. (Related)

Freight Train Pushed Clear Off Tracks in Insane Texas Flooding (jdargis)

The area is in the midst of torrential rainfall, and received a total of 16½ inches of rain Friday alone. One person — a homeless man who was trying to save his dog and was swept into a drainage ditch — is officially missing so far.

Half truths.

In case you were wondering if Wiki is a controlled media.  Yes.

I'm sorry, I miss what is "controlled" about the wiki article.

First, understand that wikipedia gives an overview of various items. There is no guarantee of completeness, either; therefore, it is a good starting point in which (for example) you will learn other good google-search terms.

So wikipedia isn't professional; but it is a very useful tool, often more useful than what is professional.

So I looked at the article: in the section "internal critique" there was a single woefully incomplete sentence that there are different theories.

I saw a lot of associated names that might give a good next reference; I saw a lot of organizations listed: they too would be a good next step in research.

What I don't see is evidence that it is "controlled".

Can you explain what you meant?

Caveat: I am NOT a truther; I do believe the US government definitely had something to do with it, but I am very open to what "something" means. For example, could it be that they set up Al Qaiada and then betrayed them, resulting in a revenge attack? That definitely would qualify as having something to do with it. Or was it a CIA operation from the start? That, too, would qualify.

I don't hold with the controlled - demolition theory. Conservation of momentum is enough to ensure a fall similar to controlled demolition, and controlled demo seems to be a needless externality.

I DO think there were at least some lies early on,possibly trying to angle for sympathy with the "lets have a war" movement. And I think the breaking of those lies has led to the truther movement; however, that is IMO simply a good reason why you shouldn't lie: it hurts your credibility.

I also think it's true that most of the world population, if it has an opinion, thinks the uS government was involved; but the pluerality of opinion does not determine reality.

Manipulation of perception.

Not one peep about Nano thermite,  the rate of acceleration of collapse,  the cgi mistakes, the pre-planned, rock steady camera angles, .. .. ..

Anyone else want to join in.? Blind Freddy are you there?

The issue is not 911. The issue is the wrestling match over our perception of realty. And this little cynic is hard pressed to think of a reason why Wiki would be off limits.

Apologies but someone waved a red rag in my face!

hn8hmI am a firefighter in the UK with 14 years experience. High rise buildings do not totally collapse due to fire even if they have been hit by a plane. Thats why we do what we do, because we know things like this. And that is why on 9/11 the firefighters entered the buildings and ascended to a forward control point to establish firefighting and rescue operations.

Please watch this short clip and listen to the exact wording used by the last firefighter to speak.

Those are specifics beyond the typical scope of wikipedia

The wikipedia article didn't talk about nanothermite per se, but it did mention the balls of iron, along with an argument for/against.

It didn't talk about the rate of acceleration of collapse, per se, but it did speak about there being concerns that caused people to believe it was a controlled demolition.

But these wikipedia articles are open for anybody to edit in a controlled manner. If I wanted to add a section on nanothermite, I would first go and find sources that could be quoted/referenced. They shou/d be as reputable as possible.I would then go over to the talk section, and see if there were a discussion about the issue already. If there were, I would start by adding to that discussion. If there weren't, I would put my proposed addition and where I wished to place it, into the talk section. After a week, if there were no objections, I would add it in to the main section. If there *were* objections, I would answer them, or adjust my entry accordingly. Sometimes objections are as simple as "redbook magazine is not a reputable source, but there is a version of that article in Woman's Day magazine that I think should be used instead". (Note that redbook and Woman's Day are random mags... I have no objections to either of them)
