A Multinational Trojan Horse: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (pinecarr)

In a recent interview, Chomsky called each word false in the euphemism “free trade agreement.” There’s nothing “free” about it. With nearly 30 chapters, only a half-dozen or so about international commerce, it’s not really primarily about “trade.” And, having been conducted in secret, shielded from the watchful eyes of the public and their congressional representatives, it’s hardly a broad “agreement.”

Ukraine Rebels Nationalize Banks, Drawing the Ire of the US & World Bankers (Arthur Robey)

It should be pointed out that Kolomoisky is not only one of the richest men in Ukraine but one who has been a fervent supporter and contributor to the Euro-maidan color revolution cause as well as the current fascist and Nazi government operating from Kiev along with Western support. Indeed, Kolomoisky was even appointed governor of Dnepropetrovsk by the fascist Ukrainian government.

China Cuts Rates to Halt a Slide in its Economy (jdargis)

China reported last month, for instance, that its economy grew just 7 percent in the first quarter of this year, one of the lowest rates in a decade and far below the double-digit growth the country had become accustomed to over the past few decades.

Nice Ivy League Degree. Now if You Want a Job, Go to Code School (jdargis)

Four years ago, General Assembly was among the first of these training schools; now there are more than 80. About 6,000 students graduated from a coding boot camp in 2014, triple the previous year, says Course Report, a website that lets students rate the various courses. The schools took in a combined $59 million in revenue, or about $9,833 per student, estimates Course Report co-founder Liz Eggleston.

How to Build a Unicorn From Scratch – and Walk Away with Nothing (jdargis)

Richard, Peter and BTV all agree it is worth doing. With $200 million to spend on the most massive consumer-facing ad campaign in this sector’s history, the $1 billion valuation will seem low in retrospect.

Except, it doesn’t end up happening that way.

Move over, Raspberry Pi. This startup is building a $9 computer (jdargis)

The CHIP is in the vein of small, Linux-based, inexpensive computers, like the Raspberry Pi and the Beagle Board. Crucially, though, it has built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so you won’t have to sacrifice a USB port. The computer runs a 1Ghz R8 ARM processor and hums along with 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of flash storage. It also has a full-sized USB port, and a composite video out, so it can work with older televisions.

The Right To Blaspheme (jdargis)

The basis of this exchange of respect, however, is the shared understanding that it's fully voluntary. It's not policed by the state; it's not enforced by violent vigilantes. When religious authority begins to be backed by compulsion, resistance to religious authority acquires a different character, too. When she defies the threat of violence, the former jerk can become a genuine martyr.

Biologists discover the key mechanism that triggers human ageing (Arthur Robey)

The mutant WRN gene that causes Werner syndrome produces a protein, which helps maintain the structure and integrity of a person's DNA. But dysfunctional forms of this protein, like those that exist in people with Werner syndrome, can disrupt the replication and repair of DNA, and the expression of genes.

Researchers have previously thought that this might be a factor in ageing, but exactly how the dysfunctional protein hinders critical cell processes was unclear.
