With Grief on Top of Grief, Malaysians Are Tested on Flight 370’s Lessons (jdargis)

“We were just getting over 370 and don’t know how to respond to MH17,” said Latt Shariman Abdullah, who works in the prime minister’s office. “We haven’t had any answers for what happened to 370, and now we have to seek answers for this. This time the wreckage is there. But the answers?”

The Netherlands, a Nation in Mourning but Mindful of Ties to Russia (jdargis)

Like Dr. Lange, a scientist, many of those on board were activists traveling to AIDS 2014, an international conference in Melbourne, Australia, at which former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to speak. There were many others, of course: a florist couple on vacation; a young employee of the human rights organization Amnesty International; children accompanying their parents on holiday excursions. All were sad testaments to one of the worst plane disasters in the country’s history.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin deflected questions about who may have fired the missile as he called for an international investigation. But he made a telling point when he noted that the “tragedy would not have happened if military actions had not been renewed in southeast Ukraine.”

Today was a stock market option expiry. The next expiration on the Comex will be for the August contracts on July 28.

Part-Time Schedules, Full-Time Headaches (jdargis)

These are among the experiences related by New York Times readers in more than 440 responses to an article published in Wednesday’s paper about a fledgling movement in which some states and cities are seeking to limit the harshest effects of increasingly unpredictable and on-call work schedules. Many readers voiced dismay with the volatility of Americans’ work schedules and the inability of many part-timers to cobble together enough hours to support their families.

Faulty red light cameras produced thousands of bogus traffic tickets (jdargis)

City officials and Redflex Traffic Systems of Arizona, the report said, "acknowledged oversight failures and said the explosions of tickets should have been detected and resolved as they occurred. But they said that doesn't mean the drivers weren't breaking the law, and they defended the red light camera program overall as a safety success story. The program has generated nearly $500 million in revenue since it began in 2003."

Obama opens East Coast to oil search, sonic cannons (Michael W.)

The approval opens the outer continental shelf from Delaware to Florida to exploration by energy companies preparing to apply for drilling leases in 2018, when current congressional limits are set to expire. The bureau is moving ahead despite acknowledging that thousands of sea creatures will be harmed.

White House Opens Door to Exploring Atlantic for Oil (jdargis)

Environmental groups say the seismic pulses will destroy some marine creatures and disrupt feeding, migration and other crucial habits of whales and dolphins, some of them already endangered species. The oil exploration industry argues that years of seismic exploration elsewhere have produced little if any evidence that the technique causes serious harm.

Love the Ann Barnhardt clip, Arthur!

Thanks for posting the excellent interview with Ann Barnhardt, Arthur!  She brings a unique perspective to our economic situation, and a glimmer of hope that there actually are (were?) some people with moral integrity in the system, who call it like they see it.  You rock, Ann!

As far as Ms. Barnhardt's

As far as Ms. Barnhardt's economic and financial analysis and advice, they are at least arguable.  But, when she spins off into her Marxist godless conspiracy theories, she has left the real world.  She obviously desperately needs to lay blame on, guess who, Democrats, without acknowledging a now 30-40 year history of debt binging by both major political parties.  Whenever I hear someone ranting on any subject with a complete lack of clear judgment, I have to question their judgment in all subject matter areas.

All that said, I cannot fault her advice to divorce ourselves from the financial system to as great an extent as possible.
