Economy

Is a Major Correction and Bear Market Around the Corner? (Adam)

Without being able to monitor this continually, he says, it would be very easy to get caught up in a panic and think the economy is about to implode just by reading the news every day. “Since 2009, not once has it gone back above that 20% threshold, which has helped me ignore a lot of the noise and stay on the right side of this market.”

Silver Was NOT in a Bubble in 2011 (GE Christenson)

Yes, I know that 10 standard deviations occurs with an infinitesimally small probability, assuming a normal distribution of statistical data. But most of us know that market data cannot be represented as a normal distribution at the extremes of the data – there are “fat tails” where the extremes occur far more often than a normal distribution would indicate. Real world examples – such as rogue waves off the southern coast of South America – are observed, relatively speaking, much more often than a normal distribution would predict. I have read that the interest rate spreads that sunk Long Term Capital Management in 1998 “should” have occurred less than once in the known age of the universe – assuming a normal statistical distribution.

How to Trick the Guilty and Gullible into Revealing Themselves (Chris M.)

And so it was that David Lee Roth and King Solomon both engaged in a fruitful bit of game theory—which, narrowly defined, is the art of beating your opponent by anticipating his next move.

Earthquakes and the Texas Miracle (jdargis)

In the nearly 35 years since she’d anchored her dinner bell on these 11 and a half acres, she’d never felt an earthquake until November 6, 2013. She could look back 150 years, and the historical record would bear no evidence of seismic activity in the area until now. Yet in the last month, there had been more than 20 quakes.

Climate Change Deemed Growing Security Threat by Military Researchers (Mike K.)

Mr. Kerry, who plans to deliver a major speech this summer on the links between climate change and national security, said his remarks would also be aimed at building political support for President Obama’s climate change agenda, including a new regulation to cut pollution from coal-fired power plants that the administration will introduce in June.

Feeding 9 Billion: A 5 Step Plan to Feed the World (HughK)

The environmental challenges posed by agriculture are huge, and they’ll only become more pressing as we try to meet the growing need for food worldwide. We’ll likely have two billion more mouths to feed by mid-century—more than nine billion people. But sheer population growth isn’t the only reason we’ll need more food. The spread of prosperity across the world, especially in China and India, is driving an increased demand for meat, eggs, and dairy, boosting pressure to grow more corn and soybeans to feed more cattle, pigs, and chickens. If these trends continue, the double whammy of population growth and richer diets will require us to roughly double the amount of crops we grow by 2050.

XL Pipeline Dispute Kills Senate Bill On Energy Efficiency (James S.)

Bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate that would have encouraged energy efficiency in homes and public buildings has been scuttled over differences between the White House plan for new climate change regulations and the Keystone XL pipeline. The Senate voted 55-36 on May 12 on a motion that would have brought the bill to a final vote. Despite winning a majority of votes, the motion failed because it fell short of the 60 needed for passage.

Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans From Polar Melt (Jason C.)

Two scientific papers released on Monday by the journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters came to similar conclusions by different means. Both groups of scientists found that West Antarctic glaciers had retreated far enough to set off an inherent instability in the ice sheet, one that experts have feared for decades. NASA called a telephone news conference Monday to highlight the urgency of the findings.
