Daily Digest 9/13 - Dollar Era Drawing To Its End, Undermining The Surveillance State

Almost 1 in 3 Europeans could be poor by 2025 (HughK)

Europe could have another 25 million poor people by 2025 as the effects of austerity measures are felt across the continent, a leading poverty charity warned on Thursday.

Undermining the Surveillance State (westcoastjan)

So, about two-thirds of the way through writing my most recent book, I had a pop at the whole idea of Conspiracy Theories, with the express purpose of clarifying the real dangers we face from those who purport to control our behaviour. If we can learn to look towards that which is obvious and tangible, rather than being distracted by the ethereal and, frankly, bizarre, then we will learn an awful lot and perhaps do something about it.

Harper cabinet readies major B.C. pipelines push (westcoastjan)

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver will continue to be the lead minister. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt will be in B.C. all next week, although the primary reason for his trip is to attend hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Others planning trips before Thanksgiving are Transport Minister Lisa Raitt and Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

Phillip said they have all asked for meetings with First Nations.

In St. Petersburg, Russia signed a series of agreements that undermine this monopoly. On the first day of the summit, Gazprom and the Chinese state oil company signed an agreement on the basic conditions of supply of gas and oil and gas development in Russia. It is imperative that the currency of the agreement is the yuan or ruble, and the price of the supplied hydrocarbons will be determined on a bilateral basis without a reference to the Anglo-Saxon index Henry Hub determined on the London Stock Exchange. This guarantees that speculative impact on the Russian economy due, for example, to shale gas supplies, will be minimized.

Bombs, Badguys, and the Brink of Peace (RoseHip)

The end of the Washington Consensus, which accords hegemonic power to the United States, coincides with the end of the dominator mentality more generally. For centuries it has been the goal of Western civilization to make the world ours: to tame the wild, to transcend the limits of nature, to exterminate evil, to control every variable, to civilize the heathen, to eliminate the germs, to become, as Descartes put it, the lords and possessors of nature. From within this program, the power to change the world comes through the harnessing of force, and goodness, order, security, health, and progress come through control. Yet today in every domain, from the geopolitical to the ecological, we are witnessing the failure of control.

Solar-power vehicles pushing boundaries of possibility (westcoastjan)

There are more record-breaking feats in the pipeline. For instance, the team behind Solar Impulse aims to build a craft that will circumnavigate the world in 2015 – and to do so will require the development of new materials and construction methods, says the team, such as electrolytes that increase the energy density of batteries. Not to mention competitions like the World Solar Challenge, which takes place in October, where competitors have to complete a 3,000 km (1,860 miles) race from Darwin to Adelaide in Australia.

Cost of Renewable Energy has Fallen 50% Since 2008 (James B.)

Lazard predicts that as energy storage technologies improve, and become more commonplace, the LCOE of renewable energy sources will fall even further. And whilst utility-scale solar PV installations have one of the lowest LCOE figures, rooftop solar PV panels remain one of the most expensive energy sources in comparison.

Yemeni Tribesmen Are Capturing This Endangered Leopard for Money (jdargis)

Today Yemen faces environmental ruin, with exhausted aquifers, unchecked deforestation, and rapid urbanization that aims to support a population expected to double in just over two decades. For a majority of the population, finding the next meal is the only thing that matters.

This is how everyone’s been doing since the financial crisis

It's not really a happy anniversary. But we're coming up on the five-year mark for the financial crisis, which accelerated dramatically with the implosion of Lehman Brothers on Sept. 15, 2008.

So it's time to assess how the country has fared since. There are certainly some — those in the finance industry, for example — who can look back and basically breathe a sigh of relief. But many others don't have much reason to celebrate.

Jan, do you mean the Andrew Maguire JPM whistle blower story?

That's a really interesting development... I'm very curious to see if anything comes of the JP Morgan whistleblowers' allegations that JPM manipulates the gold and silver markets; what kind of traction it will get.

Hmmm.... maybe I'll make one last purchase while the PM "bargain basement sale's" still on!

Al Capone Gets it.

Nice find Time2Help.

I was telling my friend Alphonse (Al to his friends), about the situation that your article exposes. Al got impatient with me and said

"Yeah, Yeah, I get it. That is how we do business. So what's your point?"

Syria Reciprocates.

If the US attacks Syria it might not have its traditional impunity to real war on its own soil.

Between you, me and the gatepost, as an ex SAS trooper I can tell you Syrian operatives wont waste their assets targeting the population. They will go for something much more juicy. Something along the lines of a large calibre round through a transformer.

Yup, that's the one I meant

Now that JPM has sprung a few leaks and those leaks have hooked up some legal beagles it will be interesting to see where this goes. Dare we hope for any action against the manipulators?!? I want to hope fot that, but given the track record of the SEC and Congress, I retain a healthy dose of skepticism that any action will be taken against the too big to fail whales. I think they will self-implode before the authorities ever get around to doing anything to rein them in. Either way, the little people will be on the losing end.

Your thinking about more PM purchases may be correct. I am sure more than a few people are thinking the same thing. The Asian folks seem to concur rather strongly with your sentiment...
