Egypt Crisis Finds Washington Largely Ambivalent and Aloof (jdargis)

“If you said to people you can cast a secret ballot on whether to turn back the clock and have Morsi in power again, I don’t think very many people in Washington would turn back that clock,” said Elliott Abrams, a deputy national security adviser under President George W. Bush. “They’re just nervous about the implications going forward.”

Savage: Russian Forces At U.S. Events (Arthur Robey)

In addition to agreeing with FEMA to “exchange experts during joint rescue operations in major disasters,” the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry will also be providing “security at mass events” in the United States.

Say Hello to Inflation, Inflation is Dead (Ilene)

People generally think of annual inflation as the cost of a basket of goods and services today versus the cost of the identical basket one year earlier. While that makes sense, it is NOT what the BLS measures and reports.

It Is Silver Sending A Message (Taki T.)

The issue we have with gold is a lack of an immediately identifiable support area. There is support, a little lower, and for that reason, we do not see a strong message coming from gold, just yet. On the other hand, [never take anything for granted in the markets], the fact that price is holding above obvious support is an indication of underlying strength. IF that is the case, we still need to see some concrete sign of stopping activity before price can turn around.

In Oregon, a Demand for Safety, but Not on Their Dime (jdargis)

Concerns about crime and taxes are civic constants in America. And questions about the limits of citizen response have come under intense focus this summer during the trial of George Zimmerman, accused of murdering an unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin, while on volunteer patrol last year at a housing complex in Florida.

But the debate here goes much deeper, to the question of what government is for and how community is to be defined.

Obama’s Remarks Offer Hope to Opponents of Oil Pipeline (jdargis)

The project’s opponents were thrilled, saying the president had finally recognized the threat to the global climate posed by the pipeline and the accompanying expansion of Canadian oil sands development. They also crowed that citizen activism and vocal opposition by many of the president’s strongest supporters had altered the political calculus.

Student team unveils world's first solar-powered family car (Arthur Robey)

University teams from all over the world will be competing in a 3,000 km long race through the Australian outback. Solar Team Eindhoven is taking part in the Cruiser class in which the emphasis lies on practical and user-friendly solar cars rather than on speed. The 'solar race' takes place from 6 to 13 October 2013. Back in the Netherlands there will be a tour of high schools to promote engineering and science in education.

Homes Keep Rising in West Despite Growing Wildfire Threat (jdargis)

In a report last September, CoreLogic, a business analytics company, estimated that 740,000 homes in 13 Western states, with a total value of $136 billion, were at high or very high risk of burning up. Nationwide, Oregon and Wisconsin researchers found, 98.5 million people lived in 43.7 million homes in what is known as the wildland-urban interface or WUI (pronounced woo-ee) in 2010.

Eliot Abrams

Re: the first article about Egypt, you might want to be careful about anything Mr. Abrams says.  He made his bones lying about Iran-Contra, El Salvador and Guatemala for Reagan.  He copped a plea to avoid prosecution for a number of criminal charges for perjury about human rights abuses in Central America before Congressional committees:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Abrams

Quote:

During investigation of the Iran-Contra Affair, Lawrence Walsh, the Independent Counsel tasked with investigating the case, prepared multiple felony counts against Abrams but never indicted him.[24] Instead, Abrams cooperated with Walsh and entered into a plea agreement wherein he pled guilty to two misdemeanors of withholding information from Congress.[25] He was sentenced to a $50 fine, probation for two years, and 100 hours of community service. However, Abrams was pardoned by President George H. W. Bush, in December 1992 (as he was leaving office following his loss in that year in the U.S. presidential election). On February 5, 1997, the D.C. Court of Appeals publicly censured Abrams for giving false testimony on three occasions before congressional committees. Although a majority of the court voted to impose a public censure, three judges in the majority would have imposed a suspension of six months, and a fourth judge would have followed the recommendation of the Board on Professional Responsibility that Abrams be suspended for a year.

Hilariously, George W. Bush then appointed him as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Democracy, Human Rights, and International Operations at the National Security Council, followed by appointment as "deputy national security adviser for Global Democracy Strategy.[33] In his new position, Abrams became responsible for overseeing the National Security Council’s directorate of Democracy, Human Rights, and International Organization Affairs and its directorate of Near East and North African Affairs."

I believe he now has a position on the Council on Foreign Relations, further diminishing that body’s credibility.

Abrams stands out in my mind as the epitome of venality and blatant disregard of human rights in the DC establishment.  How people like him can keep getting appointed to supposedly responsible positions in the power structure continues to amaze me.  To paraphrase Gilda Radner, as cynical as I get, I can't seem to keep up.

Elliot Abrams signed Project for New American Century

I sure agree, Doug, that the name Elliot Abrams brings up the very darkest associations with the corrupt group in the offices of government and finance described as the "global domination faction." (and here)

In 1997, the GW Bush campaign was just getting organized for a run for the presidency in 2000. A group of individuals, who were to become the Bush cabinet just a few years later, issued their vision statement in a document called the Project For the New American Century (PNAC), and a sub-document "Rebuilding America's Defenses."  The group explained that, with the fall of the Soviet Union, there was a limited window of opportunity for a single unopposed global power, the USA, to establish complete global military domination of "land, sea, air, space and cyberspace."

The PNAC called upon the nation with the overwhelmingly largest military in the history of the planet to "rebuild its defenses!"  (This occured shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union when Americans were happily talking about the "peace dividend"-- freeing up money no longer needed to fund a massive military.) The document also lameted that the American people would not be willing to divert greater amounts of financial resources to the military unless there was some dramatic and catastrophic external attack to galvanize public opinion, something like Pearl Harbor.

Lo and behold, just after Bush took office, just such a dramatic and catastrophic attack did indeed occur.  President GW Bush wrote in his diarry the evening of September 11, 2001.  "Today will be remembered as The New Pearl Harbor."

One of the most influential books in my life in fact bears this very name:  "The New Pearl Harbor:  Disturbing Questions About Bush and the 9/11 Attacks."  A retired professor, David Ray Griffin, meticulously reviews the stunning co-incidence that the group so desirous of a "dramatic and catastrophic attack" happened to get one just in time to launch the era of unrestrained global military domination, domestic surveillance, the suspension of civil liberties, internet regulation, and space based weapons.

And Elliot Abrams is a key player in this group.

"Rule change" coming

http://dailycaller.com/2013/07/05/law-requires-obama-administration-to-c...

When things get tough, expect the government and TPTB to change the rules to suit themselves regardless of the principles involved and impact on others.  Looks like we're going to get a rule change so the Administration can keep sending aid to Egypt. The MSM will look the other way. Only a few token, paid-for politicians will raise weak voices in protest. The American people won't pay attention as they have favorite shows to watch on TV. The rule of law will be impaired another notch.

"May the odds be ever in your favor."  Hunger Games
