Almost half of the world's food thrown away, report finds (Wendy SD)

In the UK as much as 30% of vegetable crops are not harvested due to their failure to meet retailers' exacting standards on physical appearance, it says, while up to half of the food that is bought in Europe and the US is thrown away by consumers.

Website Allows Strangers To Share Excess Food Online (Wendy SD)

Earlier this year, a report came out stating that around 2 billion tons, or half the food produced in the world, is thrown away annually. In German, an average person throws away around 80 kilos of food per year. As a response to our culture of food wastage, a German website, foodsharing.de, promotes sharing rather than throwing away, serving as a marketplace for unwanted but still edible food.

Matt Taibbi Discusses the Market Rigging in the Swaps and LIBOR Markets By the Banks (Arthur Robey)

Some have pointed to the 'physical market' in London for metals at the LBMA as the true price market for physical bullion, with their AM and PM 'price fix.' And while it is true that the LBMA is a market dominated by insiders, with less disclosure than many exchanges, it has come out that even on the LBMA the price is largely based on paper trading with leverage approaching 100 to 1.

And LBMA is heavily interconnected with the Comex.

emember the adage, “Follow the money,” the paper trail? All of the Western countries drowning in debt, being force-fed to take on more debt as the only solution, are symptoms, and that is where central bankers want you to remain focused. They do not want anyone to follow the money in reverse to discover the cause: their fiat power is purely imaginary, just like the true value of what they issue, worthless paper!

Wealthiest Americans Only Winners in Recovery, Pew Says (jdargis)

Pew attributed the disparity to gains during that period in the stock and bond markets, benefiting affluent households, while the housing market’s decline hit others harder. The report underscores the nation’s growing income inequality, with the top 13 percent of households recovering their losses from the 18- month recession that ended in June 2009, and the rest of the country continuing to hemorrhage wealth.

Renewables Investment Seen Tripling Amid Supply Glut (jdargis)

The findings contrast with production gluts that made most solar and wind manufacturers unprofitable last year, tipping a unit of Suntech Power Holdings Co. (STP) into bankruptcy and Vestas Wind Systems A/S (VWS) into record losses. While suppliers are suffering, lower equipment prices are making more projects profitable to develop and advancing the day when renewables can rival coal and oil on cost.

Old People Just Don't Get the 'Green' Thing (Thomas C.)

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?
