Economy

Although we’re running low on doctors, the solution may not be more doctors (tmn)

While the effect of reforming graduate medical education on the physician shortage is still theoretical, using non-physician providers more effectively already shows considerable promise. To be clear, all types of non-physician providers — nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and the like — have the potential to mitigate the impact of a physician shortage on access to care. For the sake of brevity, we focus here on nurse practitioners.

Layoffs Just Reached a Half-Century Low (Thomas R.)

Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S., declined to a seasonally adjusted 203,000 in the last week of August, the Labor Department said Thursday. This is the lowest level of unemployment benefit applications since the end of 1969. Though data can be volatile from week to week, the four-week moving average of claims, a steadier measure, also fell to a 49-year low.

'Oldest known drawing' found on tiny rock in South Africa (tmn)

While scientists have found older engravings around the world, research published on Wednesday in the journal Nature says the lines on this stone mark the first abstract drawing.

The article says the ancient artist used an "ochre crayon" to etch it onto the stone.

Scientists find 3 bizarre new sea creatures in pitch-black part of Pacific Ocean (Thomas R.)

"There is something about the snailfish (fish of the family Liparidae) that allows them to adapt to living very deep. Beyond the reach of other fish they are free of competitors and predators," he explained in an online statement.

California Just Signed The World’s Most Aggressive Climate Bill (Michael S.)

Electricity only makes up about 40 percent of California’s greenhouse gas emissions, so the executive order would target a whole host of other sectors, including building, heating, industry, not to mention transportation. It’s astounding in its ambition, and there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical, including the lack of a detailed plan and the fact that as an executive order it is vulnerable to change from future governors.

Can Oil Demand Really Peak Within 5 Years? (Paul D.)

Predicting the point at which the world reaches peak oil demand has become something of a cottage industry. The estimates range, but tend to fall somewhere around 2030 or later. However, two new predictions – just out this week – put peak oil demand as soon as the 2020s, perhaps around 2023, much faster than almost anybody is predicting, not least oil companies and their investors.

Impossible Aerospace raises $9.4 million, launches drone that flies 2 hours on a single charge (Thomas R.)

Founded out of Santa Clara, California in 2016, Impossible Aerospace boasts a development team with engineers from well-known companies in the motor and battery realm. The startup’s founder and CEO, Spencer Gore, previously worked in various positions at both SpaceX and Tesla, most recently as “battery module design engineer” at Elon Musk’s electric car company. This kind of background provides a strong indication of Impossible Aerospace’s core focus.

A bunch of scientists are fighting to make Pluto a planet again (tmn)

The IAU’s 2006 decision discounted that complexity as having anything to do with a planet’s status as such, instead relegating Pluto to a contingent of more than a dozen small spherical objects floating beyond the blue hue of Neptune. Although Pluto makes its way around the sun, IAU officials noted that it doesn’t “clear its own orbit.”
